Hey Bob - I'm guessing "The Beat of Black Wings" from "Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm". At least that's what popped into MY head! The collection sounds great... especially Elvis doing "Edith". I guess if I'd read the digests in order I would've known where the Elvis "Edith" was from. Just saw an article yesterday about an album Elvis is doing with the Mingus Big Band, but haven't gotten a chance to read the details yet. He's such a versatile guy. New album out on April 23rd, his first in 5 years! Details are BBC 1 Wednesday 10th April at 10.35pm. When Hippies ruled the world. The blurb goes: ' Question: Why do shows like this make inteviewees sit in front of a green wall? That aside, this detailed, considered return to the summer of love restores your faith in TV nostalgia fests. Joni Mitchell, author of eco-song prototype Big Yellow Taxi, gives a rare interview, The Doors are widely agreed to be a bit pants and the Muddy joy of Woodstock is relived (sort of). It's only marred by Kathy Burke's bored-sounding voiceover. Talk about leaving us 'speechless'! I still cannot adequately express how blown away we were, how incredible, heart wrenching and wonderful it was to hear her variations on her own work. And the bonus of course, is that she played the piano in public for the first time in many, many years. The big question is : Will she go on tour once the CD is completed. And where will she tour? Will Canada be included this time? Will she perform in E.S.C.? lol. Mags np: 4+20 , sweet little song that. > > > NP: Psychic TV -Balkan Red Alert(Dave Ball Gridlock Mix) > Yahoo! This was only my second time seeing the show in its entire run on TV. It was cute, my friend who is a big ER fan, looked over at me and just lifted his shoulders and looked up to the ceiling like he was sorry I had to hear this. He knows what a Joni lover I am!! As for a few of my thoughts on #28: <1. The Bully Boys - Woodstock Medley> This one has really grown on me, and I agree with Kakki. It does sound a little Steely Dan-ish (no pun intended Marcus from Denmark) <3. Margret RoadKnight - Marcie> I like this girl's voice. She does an excellent job of Marcie. <5. Morning - For Free: From the 70's, this one sounds like The Association or something...anyway you look at it, it's a version to "Cherish".> Maybe that's why I like this group so much. I *loved* The Association and "Cherish". What happened to The Association? Are they doing Holiday Inns now? <6. Elvis Costello - Edith & The Kingpin> Well, maybe the studio version is better but I think Bob Muller sang this song waaaay better at Jonifest. <8. Gaffers - Court & Spark:> Joni should take these guys to *Court* and let them *Spark* UGGGHHH!!!!! <10. Sandy Stubbert - California:> This is my favorite on the entire CD. I'm a fan of Trisha Yearwood, and I think Sandy sounds somewhat like her. I suppose the "Help Me Rhonda" at the end of the song must be tying in the Beach Boys and "California", but I like it. <13. Loaded Boxers - Big Yellow Taxi> THESE GUYS SHOULD BE SHOT :~) <14. Vocalogy - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Another JMDL exclusive!> Thanks for finding the demo on this Bob! They do sound like Manhattan Transfer. Great cover!!! All in All, another great Covers CD (even if I have to skip tracks 8 and 13 :~) ) Thanks Bob for all your hard work. I've never been one for a Walkman (how ironic) - keep bumping into lamp-posts and misjudging steps on stairs and generally resemble Stan Laurel. Les R sent me a video and CD of the Fest just recently and that got me humming some of the tunes thereof. I'm strolling along and the Mixons' version of BYT came to mind for some reason and I realised I hadn't heard the LOTC version for yonks. One hears so many covers it's sometimes easy to forget what Joni's original sounds like - well maybe not but gimme a break. I must confess to skipping the poppier / played-to-death songs in favour of ... what's the word ... deeper(?) songs; the later works let's say. So I gets back and opens my emails and there's Bob having forwarded the Danish postry: <> Anyway, I put on BYT and though I knew it inside out, it still sounded as fresh as daisy one. So what's yer point WtS? If you played all Joni's albums back to back from STAS to BSN, how long would the running time be? To think that BYT lasts a mere 2mins 16secs and yet it is her ... what's the word ... showpiece(?)! Let's say you were going on a long car journey with people who had never heard any Joni, except BYT (and there's that mental block thing going on therein - oh no that wailing woman!!) but these people were of a "discerning" taste in music and you wanted to compile a selection to introduce Joni. Which songs would you opt for? The reason I ask is that I will be long driving with some friends soon and would like to do away with this myth that BYT epitomises Joni's music. They are the type who shrivel up whenever that wailing woman comes on. Maybe time I got some new friends. We've had HITS and we've had MISSES. I'm gonna combine the titles and call the compilation HISSES (FOR BUMMER SONGS). Maybe just half a dozen Joni songs dotted throughout a compilation tape. I'm thinking along the lines of: Car on the Hill, The Jungle Line (a great one in a car), The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines; driving music. Any thoughts very welcome.
