I already have several copies that are pretty good but that's the one title that I buy if I think there's a chance of getting just a whisker, just one whisker closer..... closer..... That piano. Oh. Oh, my. Last night I watched the "Refuge Of the Road" video and loved the piano on "Speechless", er, I mean "Two Grey Rooms". Perfect example. Talk about genre busting. What the heck do you call the interplay between the piano and drums on "Two Grey Rooms"? I love that sound where she plays a repititous figure and the drummer comes in with a little, little paradiddle for punctuation. I never get tired of that trick. She did it on Paprika Plains too. Lama Randy gave me a tip: "I don't recall seeing an import FTR on ebay or anywhere...but the US first edition vinyl is quite good. (And probably pretty rare in pristine condition these days)." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 03:27:08 -0500 From: les@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: April 4 On April 4 in history: 1983: Joni performs at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, UK 1995: Reprise released "Sex Kills" as a single today. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 03:27:08 -0500 From: les@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Articles: April 4 On April 4 the following items were published: 1988: "Portrait of an Artist in her Prime" - MacLean's (Review - Album, with photographs) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/880404m.cfm 1997: "Singer Joni Mitchell finds long-lost daughter" - unknown (Reunion Story) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/970404.cfm 2000: "Brilliant Careers" - Salon.com (Biography) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/000404s.cfm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Apr 2002 14:24:13 +0100 From: "William" Subject: Summer Releases Dear Gordon et al, I hear there are quite a few new releases coming out for the summer season. (I considered Turbulent Indigo, thinking, let's see, song about desperate lady trying to shoot a light out ... no. Song called 'Sex Kills' ... no. 'Magdalene Laundries' ... no. Not a good party CD). The party ended before BSN came on. I sat down to try to start a book while it played, but the music was so compelling I couldn't concentrate on the book. I found myself reading and re-reading the same sentence and still not comprehending anything. I still teared up at "A Case of You." The timeless power of our Joan. ( by the way i am not a musician but i have been told on more than one occasion that a have a rather lovely singing voice .) second, i second the nomination of shawn colvin's first album and would like to add emmylou harris' " pieces of the sky," bonnie raitt's " give it up," and rita coolidge's self -titled LP ! thirdly i will add my voice to the many praising STAS . what a wonderfully realized work of art. i purchased STAS and CLOUDS after having discovered LOTC in 1970. ( three wonderful LP's that i listened to simultaneosly for months and months and months.) i was particularly mesmirized by " marcie," and "nathan la franeer," but i was completely blown away by " the pirate of penance." all those layers of joni's voice were incredible ! later... may joni inhabit your dreams, waren keith p.s. no offense fred but C'MON !!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 17:05:47 -0500 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers, Volume 28 WIN YOURS!! > Thanks again, Bob, for making it possible for all of us to be able to hear > great and not so great Joni covers from stateside to all > around the world. My pleasure, Bree, and very kind of you to say so! As always, I'm happy to share a copy with whomever wants one for blanks/postage or costs of same, so if you want a copy just lemme know. And as is my habit, I'll be giving away a FREE copy of Volume 28 to whoever can guess what song I'm thinking of. Name the song and the Joni record/disc it appears on. I'll accept guesses through Sunday midnight and announce the winner on Monday morning. And this month, just to spice things up, I'll include a copy of "Hejira Live" which is a compilation of live versions of Hejira songs that I've put together. I think it's pretty cool. So...2 free CD's for the price of an e-mail! You can't beat it! Let the guessing begin! :~) Bob NP: Little Feat, "A Distant Thunder" (looking forward to seeing these guys in town on the 13th) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Apr 2002 17:19:22 -0500 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: More on "Big Yellow Taxi" As I said, I have been talking to Henning, the leader of this Danish Joni cover band. I told him that I had a large group of friends that can't read Danish but would love to know more about Big Yellow Taxi and how the duo came to be. This was his wonderful response: Henning Olsen: "The main reason that I play the music of Joni Mitchell is of course that it is such good tunes, fantastic harmonies and the words that I can "catch" are very deep and wise.It is a special universe and such an outstanding feeling to hear the songs, right from her early days and till now. She has allways had, what makes a person a star, that isn4t created by the medias. I got the idea to play the music of Joni Mitchell because I wanted to combine a duo with the music of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, and I once heard a girl who sang "Carey" in a way that impressed me. I was also atracted by the idea of a little acoustic group that could put up a little "gear" in 10 minutes and make an intimite atmosphere. I use 2 or 3 guitars so that I don4t have to tune all the time. Sometimes a 12-string to make the illusion of a "guitar and a dulcimer". When we first started on Joni Mitchell, I thought that it was very interesting (specially the tunings) and we just wanted to try new songs all the time, and now our duo "BIG YELLOW TAXI" nearly only plays Joni Mitchell. Of course I still love the songs of James Taylor, but they are for another costallation. I have used the JMDL webside a lot, and am very greatful to the people that have shared the TABS and the LYRICS. Without it, it might not be possible for me to play many of the special-tuned songs. In the summer of 2001 I decided that I would try to find another female vocalist and , as if it was destined ,I was lucky to find the first one (Christina Friis-Nielsen) I contacted in a magasine with Musicians search musicians. One in a million. I was convinced that we could play many different places and that people in Denmark would think that it was fantastic to be reminded of these fantastic songs, either at cafes, libraries, receptions, galleries and private parties, but there haven4t been the response that we have hoped for. Joni Mitchell is not known to common people in Denmark. Especially not if they are younger than 35. From the beginning we agreed that it is the love to the music that shall run the game, so we carry on.This summer you can hear us at the streets of Copenhagen." One of the nurses said, "Joni Mitchell." Dr. Mark Greene, he who is suffering with a recurrent brain tumor, said, "I hate that song." I'm hoping some future ep features "Mageline Laundries." My initial comments: > 1. The Bully Boys - Woodstock Medley: subtitled "The Paz/Kakki Special"! ;~) LOL - I thought that fuzztone sounded quite Steely Dan-ish. > 3. Margret RoadKnight - Marcie: I got this one from Margret herself! Excellent > 4. Peter Mulvey - River: Beautiful and again I was thinking - "but isn't it Robert Downey, Jr.?" ;-) > 5. Morning - For Free: From the 70's, this one sounds like The Association This one really haunted me - the singer and the piano sounds *exactly* like an old boyfriend of mine. If anyone has more details on this group, I would really like more information (looked around the net and could not find anything.) > 6. Elvis Costello - Edith & The Kingpin: Damn - I wanted to go to this show so badly but it was sold out immediately. It's a stunning but boy, I sure thought Elvis sounded like Paz on this one - seriously! > 11. Christine Ebersole - Turn Around/The Circle Game: She is a great singer and it's nice to have this cover. > 13. Loaded Boxers - Big Yellow Taxi: Arrrrgh!! ;-) > 14. Vocalogy - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Another JMDL exclusive! Fantastic! > 15. Lisa Theriot - The Urge For Going Really nice cover from a related listmember. > 16. June Tabor - The Fiddle & The Drum (live): Very nice rare find. > 18. The Triban - Night In The City: I always love this one. Thanks again Bob, and keep 'em rollin'!
