There have been precious few instrumental musicians that are as readily identifiable and as pervasively influential as Jaco; in naming others very quickly you're mentioning the likes of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Jimi Hendrix, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Pat Metheny. To have such a clear, strong voice ("voice" being an especially apt word since their instrumental sound is as recognizable as a singing voice might be) and to say such substantial things with it is so utterly rare. The above quote from Metheny is absolutely right on, and as I ponder it over and over in my mind like some kind of Zen koan, it just gets more and more mind-blowing, but also more and more sad that Jaco's comet burned as bright as it did but was here for only a minute. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 05:14:31 -0500 From: les@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: March 19 On March 19 in Joni Mitchell History: 1967: Joni and Gordon Lightfoot are interviewed today in Philadelphia by Gene Shay. Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell wrote "We heard of this great singer in town, called Joni Mitchell ... so we went to this little folk club (Le Hibou) after our gig (at the Capitol Theatre) with Hendrix's tape machine. We were amazed. She was wonderful." Jimi wrote in his diary "Went down to the little club to see Joni - fantastic girl with heaven words - we all go to party - OK - millions of girls. Listen to tapes and smoked back at hotel." In 1994 Joni told Rolling Stone: "I met Jimi Hendrix at the Capitol Theatre in Ottawa, and after his set, he came down, and he brought a big reel-to reel tape recorder. He introduced himself very shyly and said, "Would you mind if I taped your show?" I said, not at all. And later that evening, we went back, we were staying at the same hotel. He and his drummer Mitch, the three of us were talking. It was so innocent. But the management, all they saw was three hippies. We were outcasts anyw! ay. A black hippie! Two men and a woman in the same room. So they kept telling us to play lower. It was a very creative, special night. We were playing like children." I was railing against corporatism and the effects of massive wealth on our daily lives, it's influence in government, etc.As well as questioning the legal structures that insulate the super wealthy from the rules that the rest of us are bound to. We agree that Joni is not part of that. > > If you can think of another songwriter who has so consistently examined the > issue of money and its effect on individuals (particularly herself) and > society, I would love to know who s/he is. I can't! I think part of her motivation in writing "For Free" or "while my Limo is shining on these shanty streets" is that she is a deep thinker, and has to ponder sometimes the peculiar set of forces that has made her "rich and fey" while the guy on the corner is putting just as much heart and soul into his thing and getting pennies. As you and others have pointed out, her success is also a result of hard work, determination, and smart business. But without the the foundation of being first and foremost an extraordinary artist, she would not have had the kind of success she has had. You can't polish a turd, as music biz types say. > Perhaps you're right, and that little > bit of doggerel she wrote for Time magazine was humor rather than > self-assessment. I'm sorry you misunderstood me. I'm sorry if I did, too. I also reread it, and it was well thought-out and made some good points. My interpretation of it as a defence of having money or capitalism (which I never argued against) came from a few statements and the tone of the post: But she had to set up a corporation or two to do that, and when it comes to her wealth, she was more than ready to let Eliot Roberts invest her earnings in real estate which may still account for much of her income. So Joni's a capitalistic so-and-so. IMHO, she deserves everything she has. Finally, the word "corporation" is nothing but a noun in the English language. There is nothing intrinsically wrong or right about it. It's all in the application.... That's for sure, but murder, rape, and Barry Manilow are just words, too......call them what you will, corporations are running rampant..... that was my original point, and the Joni quotes make my point better than I. Thanks for your input, and as Bob pointed out, bringing it back around to Joni. Traditionally, a Russian's given middle name is a "patronymic," i.e., formed from the first name of the father. For instance, the 1950s and early 1960s Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (read: dictator), Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, would have been called "Nikita Sergeyevich" by anyone on a first-name basis with him (!), and his middle name was "Sergeyevich" because his father's first name was "Sergei." Though I had been a Joni Mitchell fan from my college and her "Court and Spark" days, I had lost touch with Joni's music. The first time I heard Jaco play his bass solo at the end of the song, I remember jumping up and down screaming because of the awesome creativity and talent of this "guy" I'd never heard of! (Not taking anything away from Michael Brecker's awesome sax solo on the song either!) My friend was a bassist whom I respected immensely. When I told him my ultimate joy of finding Joni again and discovering Jaco Pastorius, words could not describe the look of pure satisfaction on his face for having someone really "get" Jaco's musical style. Truer words by Pat Metheny were never spoken concerning Jaco Pastorius. I am a fan for life!
