We're probably going to close with "Only Child," so warm and generous in its expressed sentiments ("Take good care of your brother..." ) It was new to me and you all can imagine my bemused rolling of the eyes when he told me it was by Jackson Browne. I recalled, of course, the many posts to this list about him. I have been listening to it in my car a lot lately ( the car stereo is better than the one at home and the acoustics are awesome!). Yes, it is more "techno" than any other Joni album, but so what? The music is great. My favorite song is "Lucky Girl" - a somewhat ironic piece considering her later divorce. I just noticed recently that in "Dog Eat Dog" someone (Klein?) is saying real low and in the background "dog eat dog" through the whole tune - sort of like in a cartoon dog voice - never noticed that before! The only one i don't like is "Tax Free". Ciao, Dave. >> I'm with you Dave ... that's the split tongue spirit doing the dog eat dog chant ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 10:49:01 -0500 From: James Leahy Subject: Grammy Screamers Here's one of my weird, curmugeonly little fascinations: Who are those people in the audience at award shows who are always screaming? It's a trend that seemed to start in the 1980s, when high-tech glitz started taking over these sorts of televised entertainments. Are they the children of invited guests who are REALLY REALLY excited by every lighting change that hits the stage or every cheap celebrity who mounts the podium? Or are they hired screamers--thirteen-year-old girls who belong to some sort of talent agency that specializes in renting out crowds for events. Do they take lessons in scream production? Are they paid per hour or per event? Are they paid by the artists' management to scream for their clients? (During the opening credits the biggest screams were for the newer artists; the scream level would go way down for anyone whose career peaked two years ago.) Are these screamers so knowledgeable about music that they have a shriek scale: a 10 for N Sync, a 2 for (well, Joni, if she were to show up)? I notice these screamers on TV shows that don't even have much built-in excitement: "Rock n Roll Jeopardy," for instance. What is there about Jeff Probst that would make one tear one's vocal cords? Just wondering. You can go back to what you were doing now. NP: Nick Drake, Pink Moon; Eva Cassidy, Time after Time (yes, it was her version of Woodstock I was asking about a few weeks ago); Jeff Buckley, Grace. (Three artists who died in their prime. A coincidence? A subconscious purchase?) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 10:02:36 -0600 From: "William Waddell" Subject: Couriers Can someone who has the CD "Couriers ... I also thought the last paragraph was interesting: "Believe it or not," the studio assistant swears, "she's always hugging and kissing between takes. She's real affectionate, isn't temperamental because she surrounds herself with friends and pros. There's always David Crosby hanging out, and Henry Lewy getting skinny. Joni doesn't have to be 'demanding,' either, because she always knows exactly what she wants." Pause. "And she always gets it." Intelligence just doesn't sell, mostly because the record execs don't want it to. Gee, that would mean having to come up with something intelligent next week, and the week after... They're not up to it." Well, when I think of Joni's lack of popularity among the masses I think about the constitution of people as a whole. . . and it makes sense. What I am saying is that the majority of humans are not interested in preservation, justice, humainity, fairness, grace, and overall real, true natural beauty. For example, many would prefer the bang of fireworks or a car racing around a track, etc. to a beautiful sky, a work of art, a starry night, a drop of rain on a sunny day, a flower, or seeing four deer playing free in the yard. (I saw four deer together in the yard this week!) Many people don't seem care about these things. (No offense to those who love fireworks and race car driving.) Fireworks are okay, they are just expensive and they scare animals. . . . going off on a tangent here. My point is, "intelligence" isn't wide spread. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 12:51:00 -0500 From: "Erica Trudelle" Subject: a young-whippersnapper's take on the Grammy's Ok, I hope this all comes out right....I've been glancing thru some posts over the past couple of days and there's been some talk about Alicia Keys receiving 5 awards at the Grammys, it seems to be ruffling some feathers. Personally I think the Grammys along with all other award shows are BS, yep I said it.... BS! I have the Alicia Keys CD and love it, not as much as Joni but I think she has talent and stands out from most other carbon copied MTV midriff girlies.....anyway, I just think that music is way too subjective to be judged in this manner, call me a cynic but 99,9% of the heavy hitter awards : Best Album, Best new Artist etc..... all have videos on MTV, they are products of marketing research. To me Joni is a once in a lifetime miracle of creative genius and what makes her extra wonderful is that the tiger can't tame her. In 1969 was the award about how much $$$ you could make the producers??? That's what the Grammys seem like to me these days. I mean come on any award show that Pamala Anderson is presenting at I can't take too seriously :) Oh and Bob Dylan most certainly freaked me out a bit, he looked as though he should've been drinking a mint julep and saying something like "I do declare". Joni rocks, we all know it, no matter how many damn little gold record players she wins :)) Hope everyone is doing well! If you are not sure what kinds of things we are looking for, how about a Joni momento, a CD that you have put out, (Victor? Gregg? Kate? David Lahm? Christene? Jenny? Anne? Bryan?) a Joni songbook, t-shirt, poster, video, book, picture, etc. If you'd like to donate something, but aren't sure what to give, you can always go to e-bay, do a search for Joni Mitchell, and perhaps get something not too pricey. I almost didn't know it was her!) which talks about the upcoming Joni documentary. In their Hear & Now section on p. 72, "Blue Movie -- After setting her last three feature films in a musical milieu, Allison Anders (Grace of My Heart) is making a documentary about -- surprise -- a musician: Joni Mitchell. Anders is shooting the recording sessions for Mitchell's next album, which finds the singer revisiting vintage originals like "Circle Game" with the London Symphony Orchestra -- and pairing with "day players" like Ry Cooder, Wayne Shorter, Billy Preston, Herbie Hancock, and (tentatively) Neil Young. "Some of it is material she did as a young girl, with a soprano voice and an acoustic guitar, now with an orchestra and an alto," says Anders. "It's so interesting to hear these same songs with wisdom. Not that she wasn't wise before, but it's like 'I thought I was on to something then, and now I *know* I am.'"
