What a class act Steve & Michele have going on in Anaheim. Anyone in the vacinity should try & make it to one of these concerts as they have some really fabulous folk artists headlining. (& some very lucky opening acts, hehehe!) The concert is held in a beautiful newish community center & the sound is incredible. It was really wonderful to get to see Steve & Michelle again. This week they are off to Florida to the Folk Alliance to scout out potential new talent for their series. The audience was so wonderful & really listened to the songs...Micheal Smith is such a great songwriter & entertainer. Steve was really pleased with the turnout- about 120 people! What a great week it has been, seeing some of my jmdl friends on both coasts! ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 09:27:24 -0500 From: "Blair Fraipont" Subject: Renaldo and Clara So, I rented the supposedly "dreadful" Dylan movie, "Renaldo and Clara" last night and boy was I in for a surprise, the film is actually good, that is if you can stand choppy editing and a sloppy soap opera with bad acting. Overall, I feel that I could sit through and watch the whole 4 hours again. The best line would have to be when someone asks Dylan/Renaldo, "Don't you know the law is looking for you? and he replies, "I am the law". ANyways, I was hoping for any JOni content and about half way through at the end of tape one at the Hurricane Concert at the Women's center, after "Knocking on Heaven's Door" you see Joni talking to someone from the stage. I was extremely dissapointed, but later in one of the bordello scenes an instrumental version of "The Boho Dance" is playing in the soundtrack, obviously Joni on piano. So, it wasnt a speaking or singing cameo or Joni playing a gypsie or anything but it was a nice touch. Otherwise the Dylan performances are stupenduos. I am sure many have seen this film and this has been discussed many a time, but I just wanted to share my enthusiasm. Sincerely, Blair NP: The Boho Dance, Joni _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 13:49:33 EST From: Michaelpaz@aol.com Subject: Attention Washington DC Area Hello Friends- I am writing to you today (with no njc tag so I can reach everyone) to appeal for help with this patient named Jaime, I am currently working with. Dr. Larach asked for my help several months ago and I agreed even though the patient is an adult (The Ruth Paz Foundation was established to carry on my mothers work with children). NIH has agreed to do this procedure, but monies are needed for room and board for the patient after the surgery for a period of 3-6 months. I have been collecting funds for this patient and so far have raised only a couple of thousand dollars. This money would be used to house and feed Jaime. It occured to me that there might be someone in the area that had the facility to house Jaime. See the letter that was sent to me by Dr. Larach this morning. If any one in the Bethesda or DC area is able to help with housing or if anyone has any other ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. We are under alot of pressure because of the time line. The brother would only be here for a few days during the harvesting of the stem cells and would be able to return to Honduras within a few days. Jaime would need follow up at the hospital for a period of up to 6 months. I could assist with monies for food and for his transportation expenses. Please contact me at my office if you have any questions or ideas (504-731-3412). Thanks again in advance for your attention and please pardon the non-Joni bandwidth. I would have replied sooner but I was away last week. Rob, thanks for looking up the Joni part in Frog Hospital. Bob, I'm not sure that you need to get the Paul Charles book The Hissing Of The Silent Lonely Room. The only Joni reference as far as I recall is in the title. It's from a series of detective stories which take place in the Camden/Primrose Hill area of London. An area for which I have a lot of affection, particularly Sunday dances at The Jazz Cafe. Jaco Pastorious' track Used To Be a Cha Cha was a big dancefloor favourite the last time I was there. Just thinking about Herbie Hancock's solo on that track gives me shivers. Jacky, How could I forget Nick Hornby. I got a signed copy of High Fidelity when I attended a talk he gave for the launch. Unfortunately he spoke almost exclusively about football that night. I haven't seen Joni live (yet !). Maybe someday. Tara ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 22:40:55 -0500 From: "Nikki Johnson" Subject: Thank you! Hi everyone! " - -Joni's relationship with an Australian that became fodder for some of her early work..."Love Lost. I met a wandering Australian who really did me in. As a matter of fact he continued to be the theme for a lot of songs that I wrote. " And many other fascinating things about her early days. If you haven't read this one, hop to it! The items to be raffled are usually more unique and a bit more expensive than the give away table. Having the raffle enables us to raise funds for our site. We alternate between Jim and Les. Last year the funds went to support the site Jim handles and we raised about $600.00. This year the funds will go to Les to offset his costs. I hope we can double it because we have more people coming and I know how generous all of you are. Les does incredible work for us and we all want this to continue. If it were not for his efforts we would not be having any Joni conversations or Fests. Therefore, what we are looking for are old posters, albums, a Joni guitar, pictures...anything Joni...that is unique and well...let me just say it...more expensive than the give-aways. So...those pictures where you colored yourself next to Joni will not do. Sorry. If you would e-mail me off list with your ideas I would greatly appreciate it. And finally all of the donations should be sent to Ashara since this bee-girl does not want to fly from Minnesota to New York with raffle gifts. Especially since I will be laden with my accordion, lemon bread and honey. Queen Ashara and I have talked about how to set up times to buy raffle tickets and there will be plenty of time while at the Fest with no sales during performances. Okay Joni lovers....let me hear form you. You know I will be nudging you from now until the Fest to donate...and then at the Fest to BUY BUY BUY!!! Paz may loan me his glitter shoes and I will bring my feathers...stircly to enhance sales of course. It does have a lot of food for thought in it. I was particulary intrigued by her comments about Dylan at the very end of the article: 'The thing was I shared no experience with Dylan at that time, so the thing was, I thought that a lot of his stuff. . . the things I thought were ambiguous and were not written honestly, I find out now were just the things I had no idea of at the time. (snip) .....now every time I listen to him, the things that I thought were just words for word's sake make sense to me.' It really struck a chord with me and I recognized her attitude as very close to my own about Dylan and other artists. Rickie Lee Jones, for one. Maybe I wasn't ready to appreciate Rickie Lee back when 'Pirates' came out and maybe it's the same thing with Dylan. I was in our local Costco yesterday and found a 3 cd package of 'Blonde on Blonde', 'Blood on the Tracks' and 'Time Out of Mind'. I debated about buying it as I've never been a huge Dylan fan. But I do know that these are 3 of his classics and I do have a tape of 'Time Out of Mind' and actually have enjoyed listening to that. The price was right - really a steal for these 3 cds - so I bought it. Maybe I'll become a convert! Puts me in the mind of that wonderful Amelia couplet: "People will tell you where THEY'VE been, They'll tell you where to go, But 'til you get there, YOURSELF, you never REALLY know." And then the way she sings it so as to segregate and focus on "YOURSELF", really drives the lyric home. That Dylan three-fer sounds pretty cool. I'm a fairly recent convert myself, I've transitioned from thinking that there are only a few Dylan's you need to believing that there are only a few you DON'T need...next up for me: - -Nashville Skyline - -Another Side Of... - -Slow Train Coming And hopefully a nice 2001/2002 concert! ;~) Bob NP: Guided By Voices, "my son cool" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2002 12:16:23 -0800 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Zigzag Interview from 1977 Mark, there's hope for you yet ; ) For other 'doubters'...check out Dylan's "New Morning" album... he plays alot of piano, the arrangements (courtesy of Al Kooper) are very intimate, probably his most 'joni-like' set. It contains his own version of "If Not For You", and "If Dogs Run Free", which just knocks me out every time. First was a blurb on Boy George (who apparently still dresses like a girl) wherein he says as one of his future projects, he would like to do an album of... Joni covers. The whole story is at: http://www.macleans.ca/xta-asp/storyview.asp?viewtype=browse&tpl=browse_frame&vpath=/2002/02/25/People/64100.shtml (I always thought he had a good voice, so it works for me.) Then, there's another, much longer, article on Alanis Morrissette and what she's up to these days. In the 2nd paragraph, the interviewer is accompanying Alanis to an art store where she's buying up lots of paint. And I quote: "At the art store, Alanis grabs a shopping basket and heads straight for the acrylics. "With oils you need more patience," she explains. "Unfortunately I'm in a bit of a time crunch." Time crunch? Yes, she's on a deadline to produce some artwork for her album cover. *Like Joni Mitchell?* No, nothing like that. Just an experiment. (In fact, none of her work will end up on the cover.)" This one's at http://www.macleans.ca/xta-asp/storyview.asp?viewtype=browse&tpl=browse_frame&vpath=/2002/02/25/Music/64121.shtml Two Joni mentions in one magazine, same date, Feb 25/02 (funny how ahead of their time these mags are, n'est-ce pas?)
