Until recently I wrote exclusively in alternate tunings. The guitar really led my songwriting efforts and I was able to write more "blindly." Now that I'm trying to write more commercially acceptable material, and I'm using standard chords in standard tuning, I find I'm relying on my music theory/harmony training a lot more consciously. I'd be interested to know more about how Joni writes on piano vs guitar. (Yes, I know we just had a thread about her piano technique - very interesting.) I guess I'd like to "see" the writing moment when she first starts to compose on piano. And, with the availability of loops (Sonic Foundry being my latest toy), I'd LOVE to have loops of Joni-like piano! In the meantime, some loops are letting me think melody first, which is interesting. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2002 08:41:22 -0800 (PST) From: Joni Mitchell Subject: Re: Happy Valentine's Day Seriously though, Michael. This is the "REAL" Ashara here, and let me tell ya, honey, you should really come to Jonifest 2002 this year. You would have a blast, and "I" get the CD's and VIDEOS out within a reasonable time!!! The beds are almost gone, but you can share a room with me and Sal. And it ends up being 26 years before Joni is in the right place at the right time for me to see her - about 100 miles east of Seattle. Auughhh!!!! The wait was agony! I asked her last night if she would room with me? I told her I was staying in a cottage where I believe all the beds are single and taken. BUT beings I'm a restless sleeper that likes to kick that I would be bringing a AERO bed (blow-up bed) and she was welcome to use this. I told her we could giggle and talk all night.....I told her,you know......Come and talk to me....we could talk about Martha, landscapes, yeah, about power....JESUS I'm not above gossip.....Ashara and the two BOBS!! YOUR LATEST PROJECT!!! Any ole thing Joni,YOU CHOOSE!! Well, she did write a note saying thanks, but no thanks. And while I can't divulge everything that was in her missive.....she did say she would be a little uncomfortable in all our presence. She could take all the accolades fine, BUT bree.. that bowing down stuff when I entered the room would be just a little too much. And then all the hounding for me to sit at the piano and play just a little something...... "just one more time Joni for us!" To close, she did say one of these fests she might just pop in when we are least expecting it. But told me not to hold my breath either...... Hmph! With all the help you have Ashara you could have done alot better than 5 months later with the videos and oh my gawd they have not artsy fartsy covers and with all the talent on this list. And then again you don't have to worry about any legalities because you don't have the plethora of New Orleans artists on your recordings. So :-P !!! Have a good time up north, witch! Alas, while standing in front of the Vodka section of aforementioned establishment of intoxicating substances, suddenly from the speaker overhead we heard the opening strains of Carey. We proceeded to sing along out loud, (no cosmos yet ;-) while walking through the store in search of Cointreau. Later in the evening, while enjoying a wonderful valentine's dinner together, what should come on the PA but another Joni song! This time, Come In From The Cold. Two Joni hits in one night! you were right about the shaker Jimmy ;-) lots of love, MagsnBrei np: the duck gone wild ;-) he says and that's for wally ;-P ===== it's a miracle! Yahoo!
