Canada's contribution, a song called "Tears Are Not Enough," was recorded mostly [today] and Joni, who had been in the studio starting work on her next album, flew in to Toronto to contribute her vocal lines along with the likes of Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Bryan Adams. The music had been written a day prior by David Foster. I was unable to sharpen it too well, but nevertheless, i am sure it's not Joni. If you'd like me to send it to you, just let me know:)) And, here's what the press (sympatico.com)had to say about the Bparty...and guess who's the "lead girl"?...Ms.M (And no, not Mitchell) - "More than 150 guests attended Saturday's offbeat party at the Madonna Inn, including Stephen Stills and David Crosby, who wore a pink bunny costume. "I asked everyone to dress in pink and just act silly," said Nash's wife, Susan. "It's not very often that we all get to see each other. It's usually at concerts or benefit fund-raisers, so it was really important that we just have fun, hang out and talk to each other." Bette Midler and a dozen other women presented a musical tribute to Nash with As Time Goes By. A three-month Tour of America by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is set to begin Wednesday in Detroit." (They'd surley wouldv'e told us if Joni was there - don't you think?) (p.s. Doesn't look like Bette either, if you aak me...) Oh no, not neccesarily. And anyhoo, she WAS there as confirmed by Rick's snooping at the Madonna Inn a few days later. Where does the image of Beethoven shaking his fist defiantly at the skies come from? Art? Literature? Theater? Or is it Joni's invention? The reason I ask is that I am reading a collection of short stories by Tobias Wolff called "Back in the World," and in a story entitled "Desert Breakdown, 1968," Wolff writes the following about a German character named Krystal: << "Never," Krystal said. She admired the sound of the word. It was like Beethoven shaking his fist at the heavens. >> Anyway, I thought it would be cool if Wolff got this image from Joni ("You got to shake your fists at lightening now"), but my guess is that Joni got it from somewhere else. Anyone know? Also, as some of you may remember, about a month or so ago I offered to work on a new section of the JMDL which would have to do with Joni mentions in fiction and possibly films. I now have the time to begin this project, so if you have ever come across a reference to Joni in novels, short stories, or movies in the past, please let me know what the book or movie was. Joniphiles - I've received a flurry of new articles lately, many of which have recently been posted to the database. Among them is a very interesting piece about the night Joni and Jimi Hendrix hung out together: "Hendrix had played two hour-long shows, following the opening act Soft Machine. After his shows, and before the party, Hendrix arrived at L'Hibou coffee house. He was crouched at the side of the stage was wearing headphones and adjusting his tape recorder while he was recording Joni's show." Read the full article here: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/981024ocx.cfm Also, I still have a number of articles that still need to be typed. If anyone is interested in helping do so, please email me off list. Maybe she was lying low in the crowd. A JMDL'er (who wishes to remain anonymous) talked to Joni on her way to the party and Rick confirmed through his friends that she was there. I think Phyliss has a great eye for picking her out in the photo with Graham and his sister! Definitely looks like her from the cheekbone profile. I'm just wondering how she ever found that pink vinyl get-up she is wearing. I'd guess Hollywood Blvd. but it looks a little customized to me. Definitely not Miyake ;-) And to Mr. Paz - I was thinking the same thing how funny it would be for us to have a gathering there!! According to the musician Anselm Huttenbrenner, who was at Beethoven's bedside, when Beethoven died his last defiant act was to shake his fist at a raging thunderstorm outside. Many have seen this as symbolic of his triumph over deafness, which was a major turning point in his life. Huttenbrenner wrote: "There was a dramatic clap of thunder and a flash of lightning, and the great composer was dead".
