(sjc) Hi Walt, Glad you're able to adapt the guitar stuff for piano successfully. I know the problems with the published piano parts for Joni's songs: a) they're hard to find (especially for the older albums like Blue, For The Roses etc) b) they tend to be oversimplified, as you say - not what joni actually plays. The "Complete" songbook that I believe is still in the pipeline is - I think - going to be the usual Piano/Vocal/Guitar style, i.e melody transcribed with "simple" piano parts and guitar chord boxes. I have heard that it will be out "soon" - but that could mean in a month, in a year or longer! regards, Howard BigWaltinSF@aol.com wrote: > > Hi, Howard and Marian, > > You've both sent mer good musical advice in the past, and I was just surfing > through the guitar database, and although I'm some sort of pianist, I can > make sense of the tablature -- not least because you've explained it so well. > > A very big thanks to both of you for all the work you do! > > I'm trying to teach myself to play piano directly from tablature arrangements > -- I can already sort of do it from chord names and make up my own > "arrangements" that differ from the published ones -- but your tablatures for > songs like "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey" which are very much guitar songs, > give so much more information than the published piano arrangements, some of > which are oversimplified and/or hard to find now (although that may change if > she ever puts out her "Complete" Books -- any news on that?). > > And I have yet to make a dent in all the songs available. > > Thanks again, and keep up the good work! > > Walt ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Feb 2002 08:14:46 -0600 From: "Sharon L. Once in 1972 in Ohio while in college. She toured briefly with Paul Simon and James Taylor in a benefit for Democrat Presidential candidate George McGovern who ran unsuccessfully against Tricky Dick. I could not believe the good fortune of being able to see three of my faves on the same stage. I remember praying that she would sing all of Ladies of the Canyon and Blue, two of my well worn LP's at the time(as well as Sweet Baby James.) Indeed, she played a few of them, but as I recall she presented some of her "For the Roses" material. I have since learned that this was immediately following her early retirement to BC where she wrote FTR in response to JT's imminent foray to stardom and their breakup. The second time was last October at the Toronto Hommage. My pal, Betty and I had tickets in the front row # 30 something. Having no idea what the stage set-up would be, we thought we'd be far to the side somewhere. When we walked in and saw there was another row of seats in front of us, we were slightly indignant since we paid for FRONT row. I quickly decided to check out what kind of tags were on this extra row of seats. When I saw what was on these tags I literally became faint. Joni Mitchell was seated immediately in front of Betty and me. Klein (to my right) was seated in front of Coyote Rick, and Killauren was seated in front of Jimmy. When they were all escorted in and sat down I honestly thought I was going to expire right then and there. I tried to contain myself and calm my loudly beating heart and not gasp too loudly. I was so overcome I shook and cried and melted down. Thank God Coyote Rick grabbed me to keep me upright. Tears well up in my eyes now just thinking about it. She was a mere 18 inches from me throughout the entire Hommage. I was able to hear her every utterance to Klein and her reactions to the performers, the music, and the video clips. She moved in her quirky rhythmic manner in response to some of the music. I memorized every hair on her head and every fold of her Issy outfit. I wanted to put my arms around her and tell her what she meant to me, but it was more important to honor her privacy. When she ascended to the stage, it was impossible to digest that I had just shared her air space for over an hour. When she performed some of the selections from her new CD, she looked right down at Klein to get his direction on some things, which was right in front of us again. She was brilliant, witty, and vibrant and so gracious with that little nod she gives when receiving honor. When it was all over, she descended the stage to be escorted out with her entourage and it was then that Betty and I spoke of our love to her. She replied with genuine gratitude. My life is complete. I am not sure I could move for awhile after that, but Rick did. He surreptitiously removed Joni's name label and grabbed her leftover program and slid them in my lap. You are the best, Coyote, even if you did have to listen to me sing along with her to your song. Subject: cars Regarding Nuriel's reminder of cars mentioned in Joni's songs: I don't know if it's the same for teenagers in the States or even for teenagers in Canadian cities, but for those of us who grew up in or near a small Saskatchewan town, cars were where we had to get together. There were parents in our houses; there was no place to go but get in somebody's car and drive around the countryside and yes, through the towns, usually drinking beer. We'd meet up with other carloads of kids and park somewhere and bullshit awhile, then drive around some more. Cars were our livingrooms. Maybe that's part of why cars are meaningful enough to Joni to be included in many songs. That, and when you drive somewhere in Saskatchewan, it's not a short ten- or twenty-minute drive. It's almost always a good chunk of time that you are sitting in some vehicle, watching the land and sky go by. As for Bob becoming the "covers guy", I'll let him answer, but I still think it has to do with his fling with Claudine Longet :~) Thanks again for another great covers CD Bob! I really dig the songs by Sato Nanaco, Gloria Loring, and Peter King. The two songs by Lorraine Gervais are the BEST! She does a fantastic job on "A Case of You", and "Blue Motel Room". As for most humorous cover, the award goes to Claude Denjean's "Big Yellow Taxi". I really thought it was Bob playing on some new Hammond Organ in the Mall Music store. Was never much of a collector of them, but I enjoyed them nonetheless, and owned a lot of tribute records & cd's. Way back when, John Low in Australia traded to me a tape with all the Fairport Convention Joni covers, and I transferred them to CD, and then filled out the CD with a couple that I already had (Holly Cole, Cassandra Wilson) and some that people had included as filler on concert tapes. After I completed the CD, I offered copies to the list and it was pretty well-received, and several JMDLer's asked me about other Joni covers that they knew of; Heart, Lani Hall, The Supremes, etc. So I asked for anyone who had a Joni cover in their record collection to send me a tape or CD of it, and we got 4 CD's worth. (I'm in the process of upgrading this volume even as we speak). So Volume 2 was 4-CD's, and the covers kept coming. I had NO idea what I was getting into! I've currently got about 34 CD's worth, and lots more to get, and of course folks keep recording Joni's songs. And when you take in all the singers around the world that have recorded Joni, it truly boggles the mind. I was very excited this week to find the first-ever covers of "Moon At The Window" (by Cheryl Fisher, A Canadian jazz singer who also does "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat), and "You Dream Flat Tires" (by My Flexible Friends, a German jazz trio). Anyway, I never answered your question...how did I get the job? Nobody else dumb enough to volunteer, I s'pose! :~) And a BIG thanks to Uncle John in Holland, who takes care of Euro-jmdler's for me...this collection is very popular in Europe. > < "cover guy/gal" somewhere out there for their music? Surely there must > be.>> I've thought the same thing...that would be quite an undertaking, literally hundreds of thousands of them out there I'm sure. Every one of these cheese records I've bought for a Joni cover also has at least 1 Beatles cover on it, and usually a Paul Simon cover as well. Bob Dylan covers would also be a humongous collection. Joni is massive, but at least it's doable. I've been very blessed and lucky to have so many helpers and so much support throughout this project. > < a > few times downtown. Very well-known in Cincy.>> Weren't they 'discovered' by James Brown or something? Any > thoughts?>> I think it can be very limiting very some...if they have the training and knowledge about which chords "go together" and which ones don't, they would instinctively write using those rules. I did a lot of Ontario traveling as a kid back then It was only 18 when it was legit to stop by the Beer store outside Ridge Town. But I remember it was Highly Illegal to have open bootle of beer in your car my canadian friend would drive like hell to get out to the boonies and then open up the trunk and and start swelling the Molson's which was my fav. Now back to the lounge. It had a rather square floor plan 30" raised platform entrance in the corner. Dark and smoky all night with the sound of glass filled with something smuggled in. I was only 13 and was all ready 5'-10" Chuck and Joni played seperately.I was brought by my Aunt who was my really my godmother portal to all culture that was in Detroit in the 60's. Chuck did appear at first as a Pete Seeger wannabe but played the 12 string very well and had a solid voice a step down(ladder and scale) from Gordon Lightfoot.Joni thin straight blond hair with as much make up on as was the norm. Driving around with my Aunt I was very used to her starting with lipstick at a red light and going to the powder from the chin to the forehead and ending with the blue eyelid stuff on the green, we drove around in Mercury's, even Mom work for Henry F.Ok back to Joni I am afraid I can not remember to many songs Joni sang. Urge for Going was one but my Aunt was pissed it was not on her first album. Joni's love for solid colors burn in my mind the night I saw her first I believe was a simple long A line dress that stood out like a painted grain silo on the flat corn fields of Ontario. This set a long shadow for my dreams forever. After Midnight sometimes the electric blues men would show up and blast out a very early BB Bing like Sound speeding on Unleaded Premium gas that sold back then for 19 cents a gallon. For all those who need a picture of Detroit the typical intersection of the Street grid there was usually 3 gas stations and maybe a cemetary or a Food supermarket. The End.
