"Lips Together, Teeth Apart" is a brilliant play. (I was very lucky to spend several hours with Terrence when he came to Tel-Aviv some years ago btw) One of the characters, Sam Truman, suffers from a "grinding teeth in his sleep problem". In the last scene, his wife, Sally, reveals it to the others: Sally: It's a horrible sound. I can't sleep. Tell them how the doctor is treating you, Sam. Sam: No, it's stupid. Sally: He wantes him to fall asleep saying "Lips together, teeth apatrt" over and over again to himself. Sam: It's very romantic. "What did you say, darling?" "Nothing, dearest, lips together, teeth apart. Do you want to make love tonight? Lips together, teeth apart". Sally: He won't even try it. I'm the one who falls asleep saying it for him! But on the other hand, there's a great freedom with not belonging to anything, there's an open-mindedness with not belonging to anything. Sharon Bell, in 'Song for Sharon,' was the singer. I have NEVER seen Joni in concert either and I'm realising I probably never will. I'm never in the right place at the right time. The right bleeding hemisphere come to think of it. I'd go out of my way to avoid seeing Dylan, alas. He is so-o-o-o painful these days. However, I'd walk a million miles for a Joni gig even if she were to end up sounding like Stephen Hawking. I've never been an ardent concert goer actually, though having said that I just got back from 2 nights at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow. It's billed as the biggest winter folk festival in the world. The first night I saw Alison Brown, a banjo player from Nashville, I think, and last night The Indigo Girls. They were fab. An all-woman band, surprise surprise! I recognised a few of the songs only because whenever I've listened to custom MSN radio (Joni), they were always featured. I was hoping they would do a Joni song but ... This Tuesday Diana Krall is playing in Glasgow and well maybe she will slip in a "A Case of You". Dream on dream on, Impossible Dreamer. A JoniFest is the next best thing. The lights go down and it's just JMDLers up there getting JMDLers to feel like that. Willy the Shake ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 11:50:44 EST From: YORK48CAD@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2002 #52 I was introduced to Joni in 1974 by my STILL good friend Anne Tofflemire. Her mother took her and her sisters to the Trombudor(sp) in 1968...she was 9 yrs. old. I thought she had the coolest Mom in the world!!!!!!! Funny thing, I saw Joni in 98 and Anne hasn't since her first experience. When I told her about the show, we both cried. When I had my daughter, Anne said, "She looks just like Joni" Of course it wasn't true, but I loved her for saying it. Isn't it cool how Joni's music binds people for life? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 20:01:28 -0000 From: "William Waddell" Subject: Subjective Adjectives We were watching a video of Rickie Lee Jones in concert circa summer 2000 at the Montreal Jazz Festival and my friend asked how old she was. So I looked it up on the Net. Anyhoo, other info included her "tone" as; Laid-Back/Mellow, Quirky, Intimate, Druggy, Soothing. Interesting I thought. Quirky and druggy, I love that. Off the wall and wacky. Mmm. As always out of curiosity I looked up Joni. Turns out her "tone" was described in AMG All Music Guide as; Reflective, Plaintive, Passionate, Bittersweet, Refined/Mannered, Intimate, Literate. Mannered? (in a specific and exaggerated way). A short fill-out questionnaire followed to help better represent in future (paraphrase). Adjectives describing Joni's music. Old Roget's Thesaurus indeed. In the end, after a stream of describing words I whittled Joni down to "comforting". My musical comfort blanket. I'll post another adjective tomorrow and the next day and the next. They must be original. 2) It should be kept simple for what I will be using it for. (Top secret!) 3) It should include the words Northeast Back to the Garden Jonifest 2002. Not neccessarily in that order. 4) Prize: My undying gratitude, the ENORMOUS prestige of having your logo used for (TOP SECRET!!) things, and the rights to borrow Mr. Paz's slinky halter top and Pink Glitter high heels for one night on the town. I will also try to think of some wonderful prize as well if I can. Why don't a few of us dontate a prize for the winner of the contest. I have a poster of Joni that can go in the prize basket. If it's okay with you Ashara, we can open this up to anyone else who would like to add to the prize. It can be joni related or other wise, what do you think? Put me down for the poster and I will bring it to the Jonifest. love to all, Marianne _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2002 #35 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
