I think Tim Buckley's live one, Dream Letter, has to qualify as a pretty good introductory album too, although I certainly find the full-length flow of Goodbye And Hello and Greetings From L.A. indescribably pleasurable to listen to. Some of his other albums are: Happy Sad, Lorca, Starsailor, Peel Sessions '68 (2), Honeyman, Sefronia, Blue Afternoon and Look At The Fool. His cover of Fred Neil's Dolphins is a joy to hear. I've never listened to his son's music, but I did cut his hair once. He was a brash kid. Obviously they both died way to early. Whenever an interviewer tries to 'pry' about those sorts of things, Joni's quick to shut it down or divert. So the only clues we get are typically from others who let something slip tangentially. I figured you'd appreciate that little illumination on one of your FTR songs! ;~) I suppose the Joni-Jackson relationship is so ugly in the wake of "Not to Blame" and the resulting tabloids that it's not mentioned much. As for "Trouble Child", I really don't think it's ONLY about Crosby. Surely his experiences were an influence. Like so many of her songs, it's a composite (which is how WE can relate to it) that folks want to point at an individual. "Joni is not a person you stay in a relationship with. It always goes awry, no matter who you are, it's an inevitable thing."-David Crosby, 1997 interview with Wally (Breese). I read this on the Joni Home Page a couple of years ago and it often rings in my head while listening to her. I know it's a very simple and some what odvious conclusion, but for some reason it really stands out to me. As I listen to her fall in and out, in and out of love, I just always come back to Crosby's words. I just thought I'd share a Joni moment with everyone. That fascinates me. When I got C&S, I knew little of JM's personal life, and I assumed she was talking to someone she knew who was in a mental hospital, and the "friends and foes who opened and closed" him were shrinks! Interesting, how her lines continue to gain meaning as the years go by... Surely she doesn't retune her pianos! Yet, unless someone is covering one of her songs, no one else's piano playing sounds like hers to me . . . with one exception -- Jackson Browne! A couple of times I have had my radio in the scan mode and it stopped on "Stay (Just a Little Bit Longer)" and I thought for a split second that it was Joni playing. Hmm. Just to clarify, Joni was personally interviewed for the CSNY, Crosby, etc. books and she talks very open and freely! Maybe she feels more at ease when the purpose of the discussion is not as focused directly on her. > As for "Trouble Child", I really don't think it's ONLY about Crosby. Surely his experiences were an influence. Like so many >of her songs, it's a composite (which is how WE can relate to it) that folks want to point at an individual. Right, I think his circumstances at the time provided her a vivid inspiration for a not uncommon theme that I think most everyone has experienced ("friends" who maybe are dragging you down, taking advantage of you, etc., and the part you play in it all). I have not had nearly the colorful life of Crosby but I could totally relate to the song in many ways, too. Joni's piano style is very guitaristic, and more specifically, Joni-guitaristic -- complete with its dense and complex tight clusters of consonant dissonance embedded within more traditional chord shapes. My own piano playing is very influenced by Joni ... I hear it, others may or may not. I've also been influenced by many others like Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Lyle Mays, Paul Bley, Art Lande, Fred Hersch so the Joni influence may be too many layers down to readily detect. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 00:01:12 -0000 From: "Jamie Zubairi" Subject: Re: Joni, Monet and Tom Cruise I saw the film last night.... Make up your own minds and watch it, just for the Joni moments. As with Mr Cruise's performance, I can never believe his sex scenes. Ms Cruz is kinda reduced, but I guess it's not 'her' film. Ms Diaz is maniacal which is great but slightly too much. Other than the weak psychodrama that it turns out to be at the end, it's fine. Hmm, today as I was looking at the Jimmy Webb songwriting book I saw the opening page "How To Write a Song" by Harry Nielson. It starts out: "If you write it on guitar Place your guitar upon your knee If you write it on piano Don't do that Place your fingers on the strings Of your guitar, not your piano If you write it on piano" I do hear Joni's influence in your music, Fred, and some Lyle, too. I just received the "Homeland" CD tribute to those affected by 9/11 which you recently mentioned for which you wrote the title song. It is SO gorgeous. I hope you can play here in L.A. one of these days so that we can see you live. I highly recommend this beautiful collection which can be ordered at http://www.jazziz.com with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Every song is a complete stunner. There is a kind of melancholy mood in Joni's playing that is reflective, a little other-wordly, whereas, in my opinion, Jackson Browne's piano is more down-to-earth. Joni's music also sounds to me like she is constantly changing keys alot, but Browne is pretty much in one key at a time per song, with minor modulations. One artist I think sounds a bit like Joni in his piano playing is Marc Cohn. I'm curious if he is a fan of hers or not, because I think I hear a similarity there on some of the tracks from his three albums. It always bugged me a bit, though, when he mentions W.C. Handy in "Walking in Memphis", because it makes me think of Joni's line, "W.C. Handy, I'm rich and I'm...." from "Old Furry Sings the Blues." Did he mention W.C. Handy because he got the idea from her? I wonder.
