From this week's London 'Time Out' magazine: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bookends: Music Books "Karen O'Brien's 'Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light' (Virgin) claims to be 'the definitive biography'. And is. ('Georgia O'Keefe said to me, "Well, I would have liked to be a painter and a musician, but you can't do both. I said, "Oh yes you can!"). It is a sterling work of research and insight. I remember reading about this club in an interview with Gene Shay from the jmdl.com archives - http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/7802tfl.cfm - - but the Gilded Cage is not listed in the jmdl performance archive - anyone know if she ever did a spot there? One of the songs that Joni's continued to perform over the years is "Just Like This Train", as she says she just enjoys playing that opening riff. Anyway, as I listen to this song I take it in almost like "listening" to a painting. The images are so detailed an vivid in this song, particularly in this passage: "And I found this empty seat In this crowded waiting room Everybody waiting Old man sleeping on his bags Women with that teased up kind of hair Kids with the jitters in their legs And those wide, wide open stares And the kids got cokes and chocolate bars There's a thin man smoking a fat cigar" I feel like I can really SEE all these people and these scenes. Wonder which Joni songs conjure up specific images for y'all... One of the joys of Joni's music for me, I would say, and the benefit of her bringing a visual artist's sensibilities to her music. Bob NP: Bob Dylan, Hurricane Carter Benefit ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 09:13:00 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: don juans restless daughter <> Yep, I agree 100% Ron...when I bought the album and put it on cassette tape, I taped about a minute and a half of The Tenth World and then faded it out. To this day it still is monotonous and holds no interest for me. Luckily thanks to the technology when it comes on I can simply click on "next track" and be done with it. Why it's there, and why it lasts for 6:45? Well, I think Joni's telling a narrative with DJRD, and Tenth World is a transition from Otis & Marlena, which closes with a Third World dream of kinds, and then segues to Dreamland. But it's much too long a segue to hold interest, there's just not enough variety in spite of the backing vocals, which try to build up some momentum to the percussion. Part of me thinks she was just trying to throw some royalty pennies to Don Alias, who gets a writer credit here and who was her man du'jour at the time. I do this quite a bit with her music.......it is soooo vivid. Night Ride Home....Free Man In Paris, Cotten Avenue,Ladies Of The Canyon, Damn.. I could go on!! Night Ride Home: From the big blue moon, silver power lines, the horse with the red taillights on his hide, her man beside her,the band tearing down..... NO PHONES UNTIL FRIDAY:I always picture Joni's cell and her lovers in the glove compartment. Turned OFF,of course. There is a lonely country road that I travel quite frequently in Indiana along the beautiful Ohio river. The road has quite a few S-curves and there are farms scattered about. Every time I'm on this road, and when I go into a particular curve, there is a small barn with horses outside grazing.......NIGHT RIDE HOME starts playing in my head. And WOW, sometimes there is a full moon reflecting on the water and you can even hear the crickets. :-) The downer for me only is that I don't have my sweetie sitting next to me. :-( I know Joan wrote this while in Hawaii. At least the inspiration came from her time there. Gem of a song! Bree Np:Night Ride Home > >I've listened to lots of Joni this year, mostly live stuff. Terry did a great take of it on the JMDL "Tape of You" project. It's more accessible than a lot of her later material. Joni has done it live a lot, starting in 1988 before she even released it. I was just flicking through the programme and noticed that in Elvis Costello's bio section it says: "Costello's work appears on...tribute albums for Joni Mitchell, Gram Parsons, Charlie Mingus and Henry Purcell." I guess this is a reference to his version of Edith and the Kingpin on 'A Case of Joni', but it had me excited for a split second. It'd be nice if this mention meant that the album's release is imminent, but I expect it has more to do with whoever wrote the blurb not knowing it hadn't been released. It is very short, but very beautiful. A tribute to Joni at one of her liver concerts. Covers report: Had all weekend. HA! What a laugh. So far the find is Mama's Boy's This Flight Tonight. This is my first post on the JMDL.....I've been reading them for a couple of days and decided that it's time to dive in. I was introduced to Joni's creative brillance as a young child but didn't bloom into the HUGE fan I am today until my late teens (I'm now 28). I won't gush on and on about how much I love her because obviously you all know what an incredible person she is or you wouldn't be part of this discussion list :) Anyway, one of my FAVORITE things is to hear other people's ideas about Joni's lyrics, soooooo I was wondering if anyone would be up to letting me know (in as much detail as desired) their take on "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow". Personally, it pulls something out from deep inside me. Remember I'm just a little green at this so if this type of post isn't the norm here please, "be polite" :)) Hope to hear from you, Erica _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 18:25:51 EST From: KJHSF@aol.com Subject: Re: just a little green Welcome, Erica!
