The person being interviewed was telling Norah, host of Definitely Not the Opera, about Don Freed's project for the past nine years, which was to write and record, with the native children of northern Saskatchewan, songs about their own lives. You can check it out by going to this website: http://www.ourveryownsongs.ca/ The interviewee said that Don had been discovered by Bob Dylan when Don was about 19, and Bob took him to the States to groom him for songwriting/recording stardom. Apparently Don soured on the music business and became, as the interviewer laughingly said, "a real pain in the ass to work with." It was when Don discovered he had some Metis blood in his ancestry that he decided to go into the north and examine the history and lifestyle there. Now that he has completed this particular work with the kids up north, it sounds like he is going to go back to doing his own "work." That's my story and I'm sticking to it, Kate ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 11:07:21 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: Joni's River By Deus Hi everyone, Just found a "River" cover by Deus. I'm sure all the Dutch JMDLers know them, at least by name, they're one of the biggest bands in the Netherlands and in Europe, very interesting, if you ask me, and in any case make their music with heart and soul and dedication. If you use the Audiogalaxy you may find the song under - deus - Joni Mitchell Cover (It's River and it's a live tape.) Conratulations Joe, and my many many thanks to Bob (Mr. Covers) for the wonderful "Covers and Contributions #25". I've been listening to this CD all weekend and it is indeed another great treasure of Joni covers from people whom I've never heard of (with the exception of Dick Hyman) I did have a moog synthesizer lp of his in the 70's. There's some GREAT stuff on this covers CD. Some of it is quite romantic, and maybe should be called Joni UNDER the Covers. My favorites are the the Spanish version of BSN by Txarango, BYT from Kenny Vehkavarra & Silvio Simone, and both of the songs by Christine Tobin Band. Like you said Bob, I've listened to Bill Laswell's version of "Blue" and there is NO "Joni" Blue to be found, but I love the song anyway. I know that most of the covers of Joni's "This Flight Tonight" have drifted to the heavy metal side, but I think the Mama's Boys rendition is the best I've heard yet and not to heavy at all. I guess "This Flight Tonight" is *the* JONI tune that can be played in a heavy metal style more than any of her other songs. Anyway, I just love them all and I thank you Bob ( and all the contributors) for continuing this great project. I found some really interesting (interesting to me, anyway) Joni recordings and thought this would be a good excuse to re-join the list. (It's been a long time, and I was always more of a lurker than a poster anyway, but perhaps some of you remember me.) All of the recordings seem to pre-date the Miles of Aisles album. The earliest probably dates back to 1969 (?)... some of the song titles on the disc I have are just plain wrong, and the audio quality on this one is rather poor. The first track is "Night In The City." It's listed on the CD I have as "Lights Out In Georgia." The next one is a song I've never heard, "Gift of the Magi," (which Joni adapted to a poem and then a song lyric from the O'Henry story of the same name.) She does several other songs from the early days, including "Morning Morgantown" (she hits a few wrong notes on this one) and "For Free." The last track on the disc is "The Fiddle And The Drum," but the disc lists it as "And So Once Again." Does anybody have any clue as to where this recording came from? The next one is a show with Joni and James Taylor. The first track is Taylor's "Steamroller." Joni then sings "The Gallery." There are several songs from Blue on this one, and the last song is "The Circle Game." The audio quality on this disc is much better. I'm wondering if this is the BBC radio show Joni and James Taylor did in London... anybody have a guess? I'm in the process of cleaning up the recordings right now. There are two other discs, one called "Winter Lady" and the other called "Spring Songs." They both have songs I've never heard before. Is there a Joni bootlegs expert on the list? If so, please chime in. - - John in North Carolina ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 21:03:38 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Announcing a new list for music from the 50s, 60s & 70s! Hi folks :-) My name is Mike, and I own/run a number of lists here at smoe.org, most notedly the Jewel, Patty Griffin & Tiny Tim lists. A few of us had tossed this idea around for over a year, and I finally decided to make it happen.....a list devoted to the discussion of the many evolving genres of music from the 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s. (yeah...I know...I guess this has to include disco too......oh well....so much for a "perfect list") I know there's a rather decent number of "baby boomers" on many smoe lists, so to them this will be a welcome addition. For others who did not grow up during the 50s, 60s or 70s, this list could be a very good learning tool that can turn you on to some of the best and most influential music of those eras, which is also some of the best and most infuential of all time. So, if you want to learn, or want to discuss any music genre or artist/group from those decades, please join us. As far as I am concerned, you can discuss ANY music from those eras: pop/top 40, rock & roll, folk, new age, jazz, broadway musicals, R&B...you name it...and yes....... I guess disco too. This list, like most others on smoe.org comes in loose mail and digest formats and you are welcome to join to either one or both. So, to join up on the loose-mail version of this list, send an email with the following two-line command subscribe 50s60s70s end in the body of an email to majordomo@smoe.org To join the digest version of the list, send the two-line command subscribe 50s60s70s-digest end in the body of an email to majordomo@smoe.org Hope to see many of you there real soon! I was just joking about the Tiny Tim list. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 21:43:42 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: I got the printer blues... (sjc) Hi, Howard (and all), I almost sent this privately, in the hopes that more people wouldn't know me foir the computer idiot that I am, but here goes: I went to your wonderful transciption of Blue for piano, and decided to print it up. That's where I often run into trouble (I.e., when I do anything else rather than sit here and read). I clicked the option for simple printing, and (as usual, for reasons I can't understand), I got the left, say, 75 - 95 % of what I wanted. The option of turning the paper sideways (landscape, I think it's called) doesn't appear to be available when I'm printing from AOL on my Mac, or if it is, it's hidden so well that a bounder like myself can't find it. Thanks to Howard for his wonderful transcritption and notes on the song, and to *anyone* who can help me with this printing problem.
