For Christmas I received 2 Joni CD which were replacements for tape or vinyl. Yet another Blue, after 2or 3 on vinyl and 2 on tape - it was time for CD. And I also received Ladies of the Canyon having had only one vinyl and one tape. As I sat down at the Mac (did you hear that Paz) yes a Mac, to write down my job search history for my unemployment report, I hit the remote for my stereo and out sprung "Morning Morgantown." I remembered putting them in the CD player but not playing them since Christmas. And that beautiful thing happened, I suddenly fell for a song that wasn't always one of my obvious faves. But as soon as the first piano keys twinkled I went limp for "Blue Boy." Especially that one part where Joni's voice kind of crackles (She wakes up and goes to the window ...). I tend to play most (if not all) my Joni renditions in standard tuning, working them out usually by taking the chord name as it is written (rather than the fingering shapes as they are illustrated in the books) to 'build' the chord up. I'm finding increasingly that she uses a lot of 9ths and 'suspended' notes - forgive my terminology, I'm not at all educated in this subject - on fairly basic chords and, so long as you don't try full strumming, can capture a fairly honest representation of the original. You can even get some 'ringing' open strings to add to the flavour. Just last night I was working on Passion Play in 'standard' and am, so far, really pleased with the sounds I'm making........ ....but when all is said and done, standard tuning will never match the open tunings with Joni's songs. It can't really hope to but trying appeals to my Calvinist/hair-shirt sensibilities....LOL. He's wisely located it just inside the "front door" of the site. I scrolled down to the first link about Toronto but it didn't have Pearl's pictures. I used the button on my browser to return to the area about recent events. (At one time it was labeled "The Word", I think.) I scrolled past the original link to an older link concerning Toronto. In the paragraphed labeled "10/29/01" is a paragraph that describes the Toronto events. The link is labeled READ "OUR DINNER WITH JONI" STORY . My advice is to go through these steps as a useful exercise to "learn to fish" so to speak. On JJ's site and Les Irvin's www.jmdl.com , you'll find tons of great stuff. A large percentage of JJ's site in particular is best found by poking around because the left hand pane with headings is sketchy and is definitely not all inclusive. I saw that painting when she exhibited here in L.A. in '99. The painting was surprisingly smaller than I'd imagined. She discusses her framemaker and, I believe, that frame in her KCSN interview which can be found in the JMDL article sites. She said her framemaker just hated her doing that but she has her own vision ;-) Also on the Joni Mitchell.com site there is a section about her exhibit in London in around 1990 where it shows some other fabulous paintings and the same frame treatment on them. It is a subject that has intrigued us here for a long time. It was so cool to read that Joni is also intrigued about it. She is quite mad about Jimi and has mentioned his genius in interviews many times. I happened to run into her at a restaurant a few months back and while she (as is her usual way) tended to dismiss most everyone in current music, she reaffirmed that Jimi was one of the only artists of the century who was original. When she exhibited some paintings here in Hollywood in 1999 I went back three times to look at them. On my second visit I caught one small painting hidden away which I'd missed the first time on opening night. It was Jimi high up on a cloud with a dark blue sky background. He was dressed like and angel, wings and all and in his famous pose before the flaming.guitar.
