Also on this CD are a great Pierce Pettis version of "In the Bleak Midwinter" and lovely song "Lullay, Lully" by Barbara Higbie. I also just heard a live version of "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Barenaked Ladies. (It's not available commercially.) Oh, and speaking of BNL, is the version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" with Sarah McLachlan available commercially? lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Dec 2001 09:31:56 -0700 From: "Norma" Subject: seasonal mondegreens this cartoon had appeared on our paper yesterday and definitely worthy of being seen by those who have never met Ruthie!! ( i never get tired of hearing it, i've gone through 2 LPS and i'm now working on a CD ! ) her rendition of " beautiful star of bethlehem " is not to be missed, and the title cut is also exceptional. truth be told there isn't a song on it that isn't done beatifully . if i had to choose between the two, emmylou's would be the one i'd purchase ! if money is no object i would get them both along with loreena mckennitt's " to drive the cold winter away , " and if you are into jazz you should pick up manhattan transfer's " the christmas album . " ( they do a wonderful job of updating the standards and then some...) happy listening and merry music. i'm off to make a persimmon pudding, YUMMMMM... my best to all, warren keith ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Dec 2001 11:10:34 -0800 From: " Russell Bowden" Subject: Forward, into the past. Gang, Way before Dan'l Boone and late night castration, there was a group called 'The Ames Brothers' of which the aforementioned Ed was member. They had a few hits. (Can't remember names of the tunes) They were quite well known. Two of my favorite Christmas songs recordings are: An Early New England Christmas...the Univesity of Vermont Chorale..a cappella Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening Angel's Glory Mr P. is one of the finest classical guitarists in the world and Ms. Battle...the voice of liquid silver. No additional instruments. Excellent in all respects. Love, Russ PS Joni, if you'd like to drop us a line sometime I'm sure no one would mind. Love you. (SJC) To Joni and all on the list, To all who celebrate it, Merry Christmas! And to everyone else, I hope your Dec. 25 is a happy one. I think what I recall about Ed Ames is a recording of "My Cup Runneth Over with Love" that was played on radio in the mid- to late 1960s. Bob in SC: Are you going to trot out your revised "Night Before Christmas" again? There are some new folks on the list since last year. That's a very pretty song from a wonderful show called "I Do, I Do". As for my NBC, it's already been dusted off and trotted down the street. Maybe Jimmy will send it to you. Geez, maybe I oughta make that a pay-per-view! :~D btw, I'm over at my Mom-in-law's house now, and I saw the "Support The Troops" ad with Downey's "River". A very moving piece, and a wonderful use of the song. I'm sure Joni's very proud of it.
