Ray. I was kind of half listening as I made my way through traffic, but perked up when I heard her compared to Joni...the reviewer (alas, I forget his name..) compared her to early Joni Mitchell - before Joni got self-conscious about her lyrics (his comment, not mine!!). IMO, not an accurate description of the Joan's lyrics. Even after that assinine remark, I continued to listen. I really enjoyed what I heard of Ms. Ray. Anyone out there heard of her or her new album? If so, worth purchasing? Just curious. Happy Holidays to all! Elizabeth NP: The west wind rushing through the Columbia River Gorge! Do you know a singer named Ed Ames? My parents played his version of "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" as I remember on this same LP there was Doris Day and Barbra Streisand&others. Ed ames did a very nice version of IHTBOCD. An all time favorite Christmas song of mine is:Carol of The Bells.....I prefer to here it with a full choir. Although instrumental is good too. Has anyone heard the Linda Ronstadt > Christmas album, which includes a cover of "River?" Is the cover good, and > is the album good? Linda does a very nice version of 'River' that has a pretty arrangement with just a few strings playing a classical sounding accompaniment. Linda also sings 'White Christmas' as a duet with Rosemary Clooney. The first part of the cd is secular. The last half is sacred Christmas music and it is all gorgeous. Linda uses her upper register on a lot of the religious material and her voice is as sweet & clear as a bell. I really like this record a lot. It's rapidly becoming one of my favorite Christmas albums. > > Any other Christmas albums I should buy? I'm a folkie and part-time > Anglophile. One thing I want is a good version of "I Heard the Bells on > Christmas Day." If you can find Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band's 'Carols and Capers' I'm sure you would like that. Some familiar carols and some more obscure songs from the annals of British folk music, all very well done. For an American folk sound you can't beat Emmylou Harris' 'Light of the Stable'. It has a beautiful a capella close harmony version of 'The First Noel' and the final cut features Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Neil Young singing harmony on 'Light of the Stable'. It's great! Happy Holidays, everyone! Mark E. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 10:14:33 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: What do we know so far? This info was culled from Timothy White's Billboard mag article from Sept of this year. Joni's next release will be a "two record set", it will be recorded in London in November with handpicked musicians from the London Philharmonic and BBC orchestra. Songs will include "Coyote," "The Sire of Sorrow (Job's Sad Song)," "Judgement of the Moon and Stars (Ludwig's Tune)," "For The Roses," "Just Like This Train," "The Dawntreader," and presumably "Refuge of the Roads," "Borderline," and "Cherokee Louise." Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Dec 2001 17:12:01 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: Sarah McLachlan Sarah McLachlan's new album will be released soon (not very soon but soon enough). I liked Sarah's music once. It was a time when some few singers were known as "Little Jonis" so i couldn't help myself. I loved her debut and it will always be a very special one to me. Then, with the others released, i slowly fell out of love and i guess it was mainly because i felt that something went wrong with her voice - her singing voice and her inner voice. Sarah's early songs were realy great - then, as i see it, they became pop. I wanted to take a walk with Sarah along the path of her life - then one day i found myself in a crowded highway where a lot of Sarah's drove. That was in no way joni's "lonely road and traveling". What i realy want to say is that every now and then artists are compared to Joni and i'm sure that's a dream come true for them. Some of them cover her songs (though the best Joni covers i can think of right now were recorded by artists that were very far from being compared to her) - - and if being compared to Joni means that your work is a personal journey that yout share freely with us - none of them is worthy to be compared to Joni. The journey is not your career. It's your songs. Nuriel _____________________________________________________________ Free email, web pages, news, entertainment, weather and MORE!
