BUt ["Bree Mcdonough" Subject: RE: JMDL Digest V2001 #595 A career? How about writer, poet, musician...but you have to get it out of your head, onto paper or tape, etc...can't worry about good or not cuz that stops the process & is irrelevant anyway...i don't understand why you would call the product of your imagination useless...what about the books you love to read & the music you love to listen to...these things were once inside someone's head...just like yours is... Mary wrote >>My imagination during the day is active and I'm always thinking of stuff to write about - ideas constantly go through my head. whether they are any good or not is another story. I also constantly have poems and song lyrics and also often music going through my mind too. does anyone else experience this? If anyone has any strategies for using any of this stuff in a career, I'd love to hear it. I always treated it as a totally useless skill. in fact, I've spent most of my life suppressing what goes on in my imagination rather than encouraging it, because I couldn't see any way to use it productively.<< ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2001 08:04:58 EST From: MGVal@aol.com Subject: Joni in strange places I'll be darned if I say exactly what piece of fluffer nutter trashy novel I found this Joni mention in but I was truly surprised. What's next? Joni in Taylor's Ham Monthly? "......She put on an old Joni Mitchell tape and lay on he sofa with the lights turned off.......The next song was slower and in a minor key, filled with high notes that the singer hadn't been able to hit for years. How awful it must be, Anne though, to have once had a voice like that, to hear your young self constantly on the radio, and know you would never be able to sing that way again. Anne had read that the singer didn't care. She smoked cigarettes and painted and did other things. Anne rewound the tape and listened again from the beginning." +++++ Of course, we know it's fiction because Joni isn't played constantly on the radio. The author has her characters playing Joni tapes a few more times throughout the book, (don't know why they never use CDs), and I can ever recall a book where Joni was used to illustrate a mood. ( that includes 2 live albums and " hits " and " misses " ) knowing how long this might take let me suggest what i consider to be 4 must have masterpieces. ( believe me these were hard to choose ! ) those being: " blue," "court and spark," "hejira," and " turbulent indigo." these would be a good start. i think they represent a cross section of her musical progress, a best of her experimentation if you will. eventually you must acquire the entire catalog. ( fortunately i was able to this gradually as each album was released.) let me say i have never heard a joni that i didn't like, if pressed i will reluctanly admit that some have more merit than others, hence the 4 must have masterpieces. if anybody cares to hear my secondary or even tertiary choices i would be glad to oblige. ( i'm an endless font of opinions and ideas ! ) glad to be on board...regards, warren keith p.s. i'm the proud owner of a tape of the BBC " james and joni lovefest " mentioned on the site . it is a cassette recording of an 8-track recording that i made in the early seventies from a radio broadcast. I think "The Three Great Stimulants" boasts one of the best melodies Joni has ever written. I prefer her doing it on just the guitar without all the adornment. I also love "Dog Eat Dog" but wish she would have recorded it the way she did it at Farm Aid. Years ago I gave a singer/actor friend of mine the album and he ended up putting "Shiny Toys" in his act. He said that her vocals on it were just so wonderfully expressive. Joni said in an interview that she wished Aretha Franklin would have recorded "Lucky Girl" and I agree. That would be something to hear. And just for the record, my favorite all time Joni's are For The Roses and Hejira. I agree with your choices, Warren, but I'd have to add Hissing of Summer Lawns and Don Juan's reckless daughter to the list - HOSL is so wonderfully creepy and dry, DJRD is so sparkling and strange and different to anything else by anyone else. Both albums sound so complete (as Joni says HOSL was conceived), and even the couple of tracks on DJRD that were written earlier in her career (Jericho and Dreamland, right?) fit in seamlessly IMO. Interestingly, I don't think the same can be said of Little Green on Blue - I remember it standing out to me for ages, before I found out it wasx actually and older song. Shame. I love to sit down at the piano and play/sing this song, I wish an acoustic version was available :( >> Hi Owen, 3GS is available in a stripped down version in a couple of formats. She plays it solo on acoustic guitar in an NPR interview, and she plays it on guitar with Klein on piano on the "Rock Master Class" 1985 program. So it's available, just not in your nearby store. ;~) Bob ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #386 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
