At a first time it was programmed that Joni would be there (every session had a "singer", e. g., Bob Dylan was there), but at last Joni was substituted by Rickie Lee Jones. It was very frustrating to me because I live in Spain (I was born there) and was decided to travel from Madrid to Seville only to see her. Greetings, Fernando F. (please) Walt, Rose listed the songs in her post...in the future, if you want to do a lyrics search, go the JMDL main page, select "Lyrics". When the lyrics page comes up, on the sidebar you'll see a field space for your search. Simply type in the word you have in mind (Blue, in your case) and hit enter. Voila! Recently someone was asking about spending money on Joni's remastered catalog, so I thought I'd chime in and endorse alldirect.com. I've always found writing melodies to be the hard part and the lyric writing to be the easier of the two. One of the most common stumbling blocks is to think that you have to come up with "big" subjects. I used to think "my life is so boring, I have nothing to write about." But that wasn't true. Plus, the songs don't have to be strictly personal. Joni is a master at creating self-contained stories that have a beginning, a middle, and an end. She works a theme throughout the song. A good example is the song "Blue." The idea of the song can be simply stated as - "I love you but I can't deal with your addictions." That's not a great lyric. So instead, she's chooses a nautical theme and works it throughout the song. Blue, songs are like tattoos (effective image, plus sailors would often get a tatoo during shore leave) You know I've been to sea before (this is line that puts us squarely in the nautical domain) Crown and anchor me (more nautical...) Or let me sail away (and more) Blue, here is a song for you Ink on a pin (talk about a poetic way of describing injecting drugs - for me it also conjures "ink on a pen" which refers to writing the song, and also the way a sailor might have written to a loved one while at sea in times past) Underneath the skin (finishes the image and a good rhyme to boot) An empty space to fill in (the reason for taking the drugs and for writing the song) Well there's so many sinking now (this ties the nautical to drugs) You've got to keep thinking You can make it through these waves (more nautical...) and so forth - you get the idea. Anyway, so I'm going to be at Northeast JoniFest 2002 and I've indicated in the form that I'd like to conduct a workshop on lyric writing. This is really preliminary (obviously, nothing will be decided about what workshops will happen, who will conduct them, etc... for a while.) I'd love to hear other JMDLers' song ideas, especially works in progress. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2001 09:56:19 -0700 From: Bounced Message Subject: Re: found a river in the woods >Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 06:00:32 -0500 >From: Gregg Cagno > >driving down a back road in Pennsylvania last night >listening to Blue as one will do >I get to River and I remember >the 1st time I heard River... >curious feeling >something about this that I love >makes me want to set the needle back and hear it again >brings out a melancholy >a longing >but an excitement to know this exists >an oasis from the synthesized 80's >I will go back >and search out this new found stream of consciousness >fast forward to the present >the comfort and companionship >of having umpteen friends >who discovered this joy on their own >and now have discovered the JMDL to share this with >so nice teaching my feet to fly with all of ya... > >GC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 12:30:49 EST From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: Jonifest 2001 CD's and Videos Since all this stuff is going back and forth on the main list.......let me explain where everything is at this point: The Videos: are finished, and the form is pretty much done. I have realized if I get too involved in the horrors I loose my balance & hope for a better world or my awareness of all that is right in the world. There is so much good here & I know that for me it is so important for me to know, be & share love, peace, joy...all of those things...So I have to chose which battles to fight & which ones to put energy into or give funds to. Yet anything I do is such a tiny blip on the big world screen. Which in itself can be daunting...yet, I am reminded of the 100th monkey syndrome. Its about how when there are enough people with an awareness of a certain issue then all of a sudden there is a quantum leap of awareness among humanity. Finally, the video tapes from Jonifest 2001 are edited and ready to be ordered!! First, I want to remind everyone that the sales from these tapes are the ONLY way Rich is getting paid for his time. He has put over 40 hours into this project between shooting Friday and Saturday, and hours upon hours of editing, and hasn't received a penny for his time yet. So, I am hoping and expecting that we sell quite a few sets to pay him for his time. He has already agreed to be at Jonifest 2001 to videotape, but I feel strongly that we as a group need to be able to make it worth his while. Also, because of the above, I really expect people to NOT duplicate the videos for each other, but order them directly. Thanks! I will be sending these videotapes out to be duplicated professionally, so if you would like tapes, please get your orders and money in to me right away! The deadline for all orders and payment is January 3, 2002. Go here to see what is on each tape and order form with prices: http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/2001tapes.cfm The 2-hour edited version is AWESOME!! Wait until you see how Rich transitioned from Friday night to Saturday. Every lister will want one of these, especially if they weren't there. I mean unless you know someone who is Betsy or Carol, names are not a metaphore. I mean, there ARE many names that have a meaning and/or represent a cultural meaning, an image, a myth, a hero etc'...but most of the names in Joni's lyrics are people she knew and her choice to include their names in her songs is very often strange and leaves me wondering. In that sense, i think it's those names in her songs, that make the songs something that belongs to her and her alone, don't you think? I love love love love this idea of a workshop Anne! I have gotten tremendous value from songwriting workshops (formal & informal ones) through the years... Count me in! >>>Anyway, so I'm going to be at Northeast JoniFest 2002 and I've indicated in the form that I'd like to conduct a workshop on lyric writing. This is really preliminary (obviously, nothing will be decided about what workshops will happen, who will conduct them, etc... for a while.) I'd love to hear other JMDLers' song ideas, especially works in progress. lots of love Anne<<< ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 21:05:43 EST From: AsharaProducLLC@aol.com Subject: Re: Jonifest 2001 VIDEO TAPES!!!!!!!!!!!! (Which, IMHO, is AWESOME!!!!!!!) The performance tapes are completely raw, unedited footage. Rich really did a great job, and it is so cool to have Jonifest available on tape! The new owner doesn't take over until the 1st so I have this time to try to figure something out. I am writing this post to tell you all that you are really special people. I have a tendency to be a pessimist and living around here I often lose faith in humankind in general. You have given it back to me. I love you all. You have given me strength and knowing that I am not alone means very much to me. Thanks doesn't even begin to cover the gratitude I have to you, each one of you. I love you. Thanks. I have it on good authority that the engineer for Joni's sessions was Geoff Foster, AIR's Chief Sound Engineer, whose bio can be found by clicking on his name on this page: http://www.airstudios.com/engineers/engineers.shtml A tech note: Joni's sessions were the very last ones ever recorded on the Neve VRP Legend console that has been used in the Main Hall control room for the last ten years.
