Here's the songlist for the Bread & Roses CD: 1. Furry Sings The Blues 2. Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 3. Chair In The Sky 4. The Wolf That Lives In Lindsay 5. The Circle Game 6. In France They Kiss on Main St. 7. Coyote 8. Free Man in Paris 9. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 10. Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 11. Furry Sings the Blues 12. God Must Be A Boogie Man 13. Raised on Robbery 14. Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Now that I'm looking at it, you had mentioned "Sweet Sucker Dance", and I apparantly confused it with her duet with Herbie on "Chair In The Sky"...sorry about that. Nonetheless, this CD is well worth having, even though it sounds to me like some of these are from the '79 tour and not from Bread & Roses, but as you can see I don't know enough about it! :~P Mark D, do you know the origin of these various tracks? Bob NP: Jeff Buckley, "Last Goodbye" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 09:30:32 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Announcing...Covers Volume 24!! What to get for that hard-to-buy-for relative? Here's something you can bet they don't have! It's Volume 24 of the burgeoning JMDL Covers collection...yes, we now have a volume for every hour of the day (matter of fact, there is more than you could listen to in 24 hours, and I wouldn't recommend it anyway lest your brain turn squishy! First, thanks to the JMDL contributors: Tim Spong Leslie Mixon Catherine Turley Jim Johanson/Wally Breese Now, on to the tracks: 1. Bruce Anthony - The Jungle Line 2. Bruce Anthony - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 3. Bruce Anthony - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Bruce is a jazz guitarist/baritone from the Delaware area...these are all tracks from demo tapes, never before released on CD. Love them all, especially Jungle Line. And he cleverly throws in a solo riff from Fiddler's "If I Were A Rich Man" in "Dry Cleaner"...brilliant! Thanks so much Tim!!! 4. Keb' Mo' - Big Yellow Taxi: Keb' is a major Handy-award winning blues talent, if you haven't heard of him check him out. This is a nice soulful funky take on BYT with a cute added vocal from his son. 5. Thom MacFarlane - Edith & The Kingpin: A simple stripped down version from Thom, with a singer-songwriter feel to it. 6. Shawn Colvin - Free Man In Paris: Shawn's performance at Joni's induction to the RnR Hall of fame, this is a very pretty and moving rendition from Shawn with some comments included. Never before released, thanks to Catherine the Shawn-meister! 7. Don Henley - River: This one is available on the Web, and is Henley's performance from the Bridge School Benefits. 8. The Lilac Time - Big Yellow Taxi: Another rare recording, this was included on the Promo CD "Welcome to Hell, Here's Your Accordion". Great Brit-pop from Stephen Duffy, who is famous for starting Duran Duran, then leaving the group right before they broke big. 9. Hal Frazier - Both Sides Now: Another soulful cover, Hal's version of BSN was released on LP in 1969. 10. Milan & Bibiloni - The Circle Game: Very pretty & true to the original version by M&B, who are an Italian guitar duo. This recording was e-mailed to me, and I've lost the name of the sender...so, if you're out there, stand up & take a bow, and thanks! 11. Sue Medley - Raised On Robbery (live): This one's a lot of fun, Sue's a Canadian singer influenced by Bonnie Raitt...she & band nail the tune pretty good including all of Joni's overdubbed harmony vocals! 12. Akiko Pavolka - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 13. Akiko Pavolka - Amelia I was delighted to stumble upon this CD by Asian jazz singer Pavolka and her wonderful band. She's based in NYC so maybe some of you can check her out live sometime. REALLY nice instrumentation on these 2! 14. The Newcomers - Both Sides Now: Your basic 60's folk trio, nothing overly memorable about their cover of the franchise. 15. Lonnie Knight - For Free: Nice singer-songwriter take on the classic. He must have been able to relate to the subject matter as this was the only cover tune on his album of self-penned songs. 16. Walt Barr - Chelsea Morning: Here's another different twist on Chelsea, Walt's an electric jazz guitarist who turns in a nice "LA Jazz" sound on the song. 17. Keith Jarrett - All I Want: Surprisingly, nothing very creative here from piano virtuouso Jarrett. One of his earlier recordings, it's pretty enough and gets the job done and that's about it. 18. Louis van Dyke/Rogier van Otterloo - Both Sides Now: Scrumptious Dutch Jazz band takes on the franchise with wonderful results...and John, "van Dyke" is how he spelled it on the record jacket! ;~) So there's your Volume 24...hopefully contributors and subscribers have been able to give it a few spins...I'd love to hear what you think! The first five tracks are from the Bread and Roses Festival, on September 4, 1978. I'm pretty certain this is only a portion of what was performed. I remember reading that Coyote was the first song on that date. Tracks 7 thru 14 were from September 16, 1979, and I think was the last date of the Shadows and Light tour. That date was also apart of the Bread and Roses Festival from 1979. FWIW, I'm pretty certain the '78 selections are from a soundboard, and the '79 performance is definitely a crappy audience recording (it pierces my ears every time I hear Pat Metheny scream out those notes on Coyote). So far I haven't seen anything out there for the '80 show. I would give my left nut for a copy of that! Even though Randy mention that the performance with BB King was anything but sparkling I'd love to check out Joni's duet with Herbie on SSD. There have been lots of questions about forms and other things, so I will try to answer some of them here. 1) Please fill out as much as you can on the online form now, and add things as you know them. (Flight info, etc.) The most important thing right now is all the accommodation information, as I am assigning rooms as the deposits come in. Please remember to click "Save All Information" at the very bottom of the page EACH time you change any information. Please DO NOT send this form to me hard copy. 2) DO print out the release form, sign it, and mail the hard copy to me at: Ashara Stansfield 40 Parsonage Lane Topsfield, MA 01983 USA This is an absolute requirement!! I need to have this form from EVERY person that attends, including friends or significant others. Click on "this form" at the end of the release to print out the form. 3) Don't forget to sign up for the Northeast Jonifest mailing list by sending a blank e-mail message to: NortheastJonifest-subscribe@yahoogroups.com 4) Please don't forget to add an extra 5% if you choose to pay by Paypal. This needs to happen EACH time you make a payment. 5) A reminder that the checks for the donations for Les should be made out directly to him, Les Irvin, and sent to me. 6) Please check the Question and Answer section periodically for updates. As I receive questions, I will try to add to that section because others may have the same questions. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ACCOMMODATION UPDATE: The cottages are now gone. Please choose another accommodation when you make your choices. The only rooms left that have private baths are in Morningstar Lodge, which is up near the Performance Space, and I am guessing will be the more late-night crowd. There are still rooms available with shared baths in both Valley View and Northern Lights. A reminder, if it is important to you to have a room with a bed as opposed to a camping spot, please make sure you get your deposits in as soon as possible! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT WEBSITES: Information and sign up for the Northeast Back to the Garden Jonifest 2002: http://www.jmdl.com/Jonifest2002 The Full Moon website: http://www.fullmooncentral.com/ The JMDL Full Moon website, with pictures and explanations of accommodations, and more! http://www.jmdl.com/fullmoon.cfm These 2 sites are now available as a link on the main Jonfest page. - -------------------------------------------------- I know all of this is a lot of info, and a lot of filling out right now, but suffice it to say, it is necessary to run a smooth Jonifest! Thanks for your ever-enduring patience! A very HUGE THANK YOU to Les, who has spent countless hours with me, setting up the Jonifest webpage, forms, and database. My job is 1,000% easier this year because of him. And lastly, at least 5 people from our JMDL community have been laid off in the past week or so, and many people will need help getting to Jonifest this year. If you can possibly make a donation to the Scholarship Fund for Jonifest, even if you are not planning on attending, it will be greatly appeciated. Thank you!! Part of the reason she had David Crosby work with her on STAS was because he let her do it her way. Haven't read the Hinton book but I've heard only bad about it. In contrast, I thought the O'Brien book that just came out in England was quite good. She covers the Crosby-as-producer angle well, and it's exactly as you say. Joni somehow broke in with complete creative control over just about everything. This isn't entirely shocking, given the fact that this was the time when rock music (and by extension the singer-songwriters) were being seen for the first time as artists more than mere entertainers. Still, it was just the beginning of this mentality c. '68. James Taylor, if Ian Halperin's quite embarrassing biography can be trusted on ANYTHING (I certainly doubt, for instance, that Carly Simon was dating Picasso in 1980!) didn't start out that way. One of his earlier recordings, it's pretty >enough and gets the job done and that's about it. There's much more here than meets the ear. Creativity, in covers, can be a highly overrated commodity; too many covers are too damn "creative," by which I mean that the "creativity" supersedes the song. Yeah, a radical reworking can sometimes work, but often all a song needs is the firm stamp of the cover artist's own voice. With Jarrett it's the latter; the thing is, that stamp is somewhat masked by the fact that the song itself lays squarely on the broad intersection of Joni's and Jarrett's melodic/harmonic language. I think that's a big part of why he played it: to demonstrate the hipness of Joni's music, just as it is, with no further "hipping it up." He recognized a kinship in her music and celebrates by just "singing" her song in his voice, which shares so many characteristics with hers. Also, few jazz musicians at that time were investigating the current popular songs as alternative jazz vehicles to decades of Gershwin, Porter, etc. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 21:03:48 -0800 From: "Bree Mcdonough" Subject: Re: 100 Greatest Women of Music sjc >1. Anyone in Europe (and the UK) who would like a copy - just contact me. George & Eric: Not only did George and Eric 'do something together' in recent years, they even toured together in the early nineties. Last night German radio broadcast a George Harrison w/Eric Clapton concert from December 1991 in Japan to commemmorate his death. I recorded it, put it to CD and am perfectly willing to burn a few extra copies for GH/EC admirers on the list. Just let me know if you would want one ...
