Rachel was on the Folktrain to the Vancouver FA in February and played several songs at our impromtu on-board jonifest (which started in Saskatoooooon!) - I seem to remember she did a beautiful version of Tin Angel and others - and was there to the end (around 3am) with Gregg Cagno and myself, after everyone else had drifted off. To add to the confusion, 'Court and Spark' (which sounds terrible!) is often sold with an HDCD sticker on the front, but is actually just the old transfer (with a sticker on the front). Terrible really. I can't fathom why there are different versions for different countries - surely it would be easier to have one version the world over. Oh well. Speaking of audio quality, I have a coupla questions myself: Does anyone have the DVD-A version of Both Sides Now? I can imagine the orchestra sounds pretty amazing in 5.1 surround! Also, is there a DCC disc of Court and Spark (I know there was a vinyl audiophile pressing)? And finally, is it worth me replacing my Joni discs with HDCD versions from CDNow.com or whatever? I'm pretty into having the best sound qualiy, but I'm also a poor student, so I don't want to waste my money! George Harrison Within You Without You ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 09:38:48 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: There are places I remember.... My fondest memory of George was in 1971 when he organized the concert for the refugees of Bangla-Desh. And then there was those Traveling Wilburys....... My brother Richard and I picked up this hippie hitchhiker (Robert) from Colorado (yeah, we can upon a child of God) He was tall, long blonde hair and blue eyed. Not too bad on the eye. Rob ended up renting an apartment in an old victorian house not far from where we lived. We met again one day and he became a very good friend to me. Was this fate? I would bring over my Joni albums to play and I remember him saying one day after listening to Blue that he thought that something had happened to Joni for which she just couldn't handle. He knew how much I loved Harrison and surprised me one day with tickets to the Bangla Desh concert at MSG in NYC. There are some people who have touched and made an impact on my life in some way and Rob was one of these people. Then there are those whose lives touched the hearts of humanity and George was one of these people. It's rainy and cloudy here in NJ as well Bob and a Blue Moon tonight. Very appropriate indeed. The wonderful ' Born to Laugh at Tornadoes' by Was (Not Was) (possibly the funniest rock record ever made) and the even more wonderful 'The Big Express' by XTC were part of this price structure as well. The XTC back catalog have all been remastered and rerelesed, (and The Big Express is one of the most improved) so there's hope for the Joni as well. And as long as were on the subject, DED is my FAVORITE of the '80's Joni cd's. If I had to pick one as (almost) unlistenable, it would be Chalk Mark ... Tyler RE: Well, there are two schools of thought, I suppose...if you look at Amazon.com, basically Joni's entire catalogue is priced from $12 to $15 EXCEPT for DED which is priced at $6.97. That's $7 for a brand-new, unsealed CD. Whether we like it or not, it's obviously a turkey in terms of sales. Yahoo! He introduced them to the music of Bob Dylan, and kept playing Dylan's first LP until they got it. (Dylan, in turn, gave the Beatles their first taste of marijuana, which brought new dimension to their music). George brought Indian music to the attention of the Beatles, spreading it's popularity worldwide. He got them into meditation, brought them to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in India for an extended stay, where most of the white album was written. George and John were the first Beatles to take LSD, unknowingly dosed by a friend. They brought the psychedelic experience into the musical mix. George's guitar playing is very often underrated because he was able to keep his ego in check and play exactly what was needed for a song, nothing less and nothing more. The pre-chorus riff in "Help!" is a good example of a really difficult passage. Eric Clapton has praised his guitarmanship, pointing out that George invented and perfected a whole style of slide playing. Carl Perkins sat in amazement, on the "Carl Perkins and Friends" concert film as George played one of Perkins songs, creating an echo effect with his playing, explaining that, as a youth, he didn't know about echo chambers, so he learned how to play it that way listening to the radio. George's "Concert For Bangla Desh" , to aid starving famine victims was the blueprint for Live Aid, Farm Aid, and subsequent benifit concerts. Frank Sinatra called "Something" the greatest love song of our time. George's Joni connection (and our local connection here in Mendocino County) was his use of guitarist Robben Ford (LA Express). You mentioned >>>"Blue", "For the Roses" and "Court & Spark" and even the uneven "Miles of Aisles" I love those albums too. Since you are already familiar with "Judgment of the Moon And Stars", you might also like her extended piano/orchestral piece called "Paprika Plains" on "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter". The extremely personal lyrics of "Blue" are evident on what many here think is her finest hour, an album called "Hejira". The jazzy parts of "Court And Spark" were later fleshed out in "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns". In fact, her jazz singing was never better than on "Mingus" which was enthusiastically welcomed by Leonard Feather of "downbeat Magazine". Joni sings some standards of the 40s on "Both Sides Now" with a huge orchestra replete with audiophile-grade recording. Where live performances are concerned, I think that "Shadows And Light" is beyond comparison; it's even available as a video on VHS and DVD (in high quality stereo) and includes my favorite guitar solo ever captured on mag tape. I trust all on this list, and Joni herself, join me in mourning the passing of George Harrison at age 58, yesterday, 29 Nov. 2001. II. A belated happy birthday to Jim, and thanks to him for maintaining the site. III. An even more belated birthday to Brian. In her own public greetings to him, his wife uses the spellings "Brei" and "boi." Now, I suppose "Brei" is a phonetic rending of the first syllable of "Brian" -- if it were spelled "Bri" or "Brie," others might read it and pronounce it mentally (or aloud) as "bree." But what is the significance of spelling "boy" as "boi"? This inquiring mind wants to know.
