Joni is also thanked as 'joni mitchell-klein' on this record which is the first time i have ever seen her referred to as such. p.s. david was one of 'david and david' who had a hit with 'boomtown'. i don't know which david he was though... have an awesome day - chris(topher) Yahoo! Was it 3 hours long? I am such a gigantic Sting fan...mostly his earlier solo stuff & of course the Police. In my research on Jonimitchell.com for our Joni Tribute I learned that Joni was a huge Police fan. But you all probably already know this. Here is an excerpt: 'Joni flew to the Caribbean for a six week vacation/writing expedition. Joni was also in the islands to get the feel of the music. Reggae was playing everywhere she went, and when she visited a local disco 3 or 4 times a week to dance, she heard the popular songs of the day. This was where she was introduced to the pop-rock polyrhythm music of groups like Steely Dan, Talking Heads, and especially the Police. She fell in love with their music. Joni told Musician magazine about her admiration for the Police: "Their rhythmic hybrids, and the positioning of the drums, and the sound of the drums, was one of the main calls out to me to make a more rhythmic album".' ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 16:22:23 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: Re: Man From Mars, different versions In a message dated 11/25/01 5:36:16 AM, messling@enter.net writes: << The original soundtrack was mistakenly released with Joni singing this song [Man From Mars] instead of the movie actress. It's not the TTT version, but an acoustic version with piano. I like it better than the TTT version, myself. As soon as the mistake was discovered, the CD was yanked and re-released with the correct track, but of course a lot of the Joni disks are floating around out there. >> Oh! Thanks, Deb. I didn't know that! Nuts -- my friend who had the soundtrack and taped it for me had the post-joni version -- which I assume is closer to what you described but without Joni's voice. I'm sure I'd like the acoustic/piano version better, too. As much as I like the TtT version, it's a little..."muddy" sounding to me (I'm not sure what the technical word or explanation is for this; putting it metaphorically, it sounds to me like there's not enough space between the various sounds.) Somebody had mentioned that Kenny Lattimore/Peter White's versio was used in an ad, but Kenny's voice is like buttah. If I see the ad, I'm sure I'll recognize who it is, and I'll let you know. OR maybe it's one I don't know of! Praise be! Speaking of River covers, I took the plunge (get it? Plunge? River?) and bought the Holiday CD called "wonderland - a winter solstice celebration" with Peter Mulvey's cover of River on it, and I am thoroughly pleased with the whole thing. Very different, and totally free of cheesy arrangements and cliche. Plus, partial proceeds benefit the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, so they can have real food instead of tofu! :~) Another plus...Signature Sounds (the record company) throws in a whole 'nother CD free, giving you samples of some of their artists. Some are better than others, but some great stuff on it to be sure. If you're looking for some new holiday music, you could do a lot worse than this deal. I have this CD, I was a big fan of David + David (Baerwald/Ricketts) so I got this one right off. Joni sings backup on "Liberty Lies", but it's nigh impossible to hear it. You'd never know, unless I suppose if you put headphones on and cranked it way up or something. Lots of Joni connections on this record...Greg Liesz plays on it, he would go on to tour with Joni in '98. I had the pleasure of meeting him, a genuinely nice man and an incredible talent. Vinnie Colauita plays drums, he (and of course Klein) toured with Joni in '83. Alejandro Acuna plays percussion, and he played on DJRD. And of course, David appears on NRH, lending a supporting vocal to "Nothing Can Be Done", and he was featured heavily in the video as well. And Les will back me up on this one: Baerwald's "Triage" is a GREAT record! I was an admirer back when too, early 80's? when I saw her with a band that was fabulous and stopped on a dime! I was on my way home from work here in SF and saw that she and her small band was performing in a very small venue in about an hour. I got off the streetcar and bought a ticket, excited at seeing her after so many years. She looks the same and sounds the same, literally. She played no new music, and rushed through each piece like she couldn't wait to pick up the pay and get out of there. No rapport, nothing genuine as I saw it. I was roundly disappointed. When this happens it makes me appreciate Joni more than ever, for staying creative and fresh, no matter what everyone wants to hear. Perhaps someone has had a different experience, and I hope Joan A. still writes and is staying creative. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 21:36:57 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Happy Birthday!!!
