I had always assumed she did that because she wanted people to think(or not) about her sexuality/gender. Maybe I am wrong. Like JK Rowling the author of the Harry Potter books..she was told by her publisher that 'Joanne' Rowling would never sell books to boys so they abbreviated it to JK. I remember the first time I heard kd lang...I was not really sure if it was a man or woman singing? Modern art was the death knell > of art instruction. This tells me I was not alone! It seems that so much which was essential was thrown out in the "deconstruction" of some art forms in the name of creativity. > Going for a Matisse look, open palette. But if you want the work to look like Vermeer, Sargent, or Norman Rockwell, > it's time to think values. It's interesting - Since my teachers did not provide the knowledge, I used to turn to looking at the works of these very painters and some other in an attempt to better learn how to paint. > I think Joni is looking for a happy medium between the two. She wants the freedom, but craves the form as well. > Part of her duality, I think. I think you are exactly right. I recall it being said here (maybe by Debra) that Joni seemed to be working out, or through, various influences and styles. I agree and also think that she may be doing this to teach herself how better to paint. Kind of a do-it-yourself practice with the masters in a way. For some it is easier to try to replicate from a visual experience than read it from a book (in the absense of a good teacher). As for me, I think it would take a lot to teach an old dog new tricks, but you never know. I do think you would be the most excellent "tutor" for Joni! I also like Pierre Bensusan, and his music is modal with a capital M! I always though the modal nature of Joni's music came from her guitar tunings. Anyway, I got to thinking about scales, and how Western music uses the chromatic scale. I recall Joni mentioning in an early interview that she listened to Japanese kyoto scales. I don't quite hear that in Joni's early music, although I do hear it in Ellen McIlwaine who grew up in Japan. You can hear that influence in her music, although one would categorize her loosely as blues. Is there a good Web site that compares various scales? Thanks! lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 10:14:26 -0600 From: mann@chicagonet.net Subject: Joni's EX & Diana Krall no longer an item!?? New news to me.........seems "I'm always running behind the times" on these little details. Diana Krall is on the cover of Target's "Target The Family" Holiday 2001 issue (the free magazine Target puts out and displayed usually near the service desk). Inside is an eight page interview with lots of pictures. The inside cover also has pictures. Click here for picture.......scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the cover of this issue: http://www.target.com/target_group/whats_new/whatsnew_main.jhtml From page 33: "If there's one area where Krall is holding back, however, it's marriage. She describes her boyfriend of nearly a year, a screenwriter from New York, as "so good I don't deserve him. Most guys take one look at my schedule and say they can't deal with this. He's dealing very well." Unlike her parents, JP, as she calls him, doesn't usually travel with her. And when he visits, their time together is brief...." I remember back a bit when it was reported that L.K. and D.K. were seen in restaurants and were an "item". Soon after this was the T.N.T. show which featured D.K. In retrospect I suspect that Klein and Krall were probably just fixing up a deal so that she would be part of the program. mann@chicagonet.net wrote: > New news to me.........seems "I'm always running behind the times" > on these little details. > > Diana Krall is on the cover of Target's > "Target The Family" Holiday 2001 issue > (the free magazine Target puts out > and displayed usually near the service > desk). > > Inside is an eight page interview with > lots of pictures. So I was listening to Charles Ives (early-mid 20th century composer) who was a brilliant musician and manipulator of sound. I had to listen for this Music in American society class and I really respected what he was doing in his compositions and the uniqueness and technical greatness. However, I found myself not really enjoying listening to it. He uses a lot of dissonance, and while I like dissonance I am not fond of dissonance sounding like it is purposeful and just out of place to be out of place. Hard to explain, but anyways... Back to work...or something...miss y'all I've kinda been immersed in studying and research. Love Nikki "Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight. Or did her teachers forsake technical > criticism or instruction in favor of original style? As I recall, Joni said that she was more interested in figurative painting and abstraction was the flavor of the day. So her instructors were somewhat dismissive of the type of painting she wanted to do. I don't remember what interview or article this is from but I believe she also said that students with a talent or inclination toward figurative art were more or less pushed toward commercial art and not viewed as serious artists. On the whole the experience was not a positive one for her & she most likely was not engaged enough to get much out of it. Remember that she quit piano lessons when her creativity was stifled. I suspect that she either didn't learn much in art school or 'unlearned' it when it didn't suit her.
