I know she was also mentioned as being a potential guest of the Chieftains on a live television show celebrating their Big 40. The Cheiftains were to do two live shows at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin as well as tour New Zealand and Australia in early November ending with the Saint Patty's Day Parade in New York. But now they've made this anouncement, so I don't know where that puts things or where even Joni was suppose to be in these plans. Chieftains play Memorial Service - 10/8/2001 OCTOBER 8th, 2001 b The Chieftains have played at a special memorial service for Matthew ObMahony, one of the nearly 800 Cantor Fitzgerald employees killed in the September 11 attacks on the WTC. Mr. ObMahonybs wife called The Chieftains with a special request to play at the service, which took place on October 3rd. Touched by the request, The Chieftains agreed to play as both a gesture to the ObMahonys and to give something back to New York and the U.S, where the group have long enjoyed incredible support. Paddy Maloney visited the site of the disaster the following day, playing his whistle for a crowd of firefighters, police and recovery workers. As a result of the September 11 attacks, The Chieftains have postponed their 40th anniversary celebrations. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 10:30:19 EST From: YORK48CAD@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2001 #545 Welcome Russ, I few weeks ago a friend of mine was cleaning out his house and gave me the S.F. It cost $34.95 plus shipping/Canadian. It came within a week. I am surprised at the breadth of her research. I am only through 50 pages, but have been pleasantly surprised with its scope. I'd say, "Karen knows Joni." I thought it rather humorous when Karen asked her to read it, and Joni rejected her offer nicely saying it would be too weird reading about herself, or something to that effect. Plus, she was writing her OWN book! Yep, Rick she is - -she is. Can't wait for it and then, of course, the new CD that we were lucky enough to be privy to her practice on... Hot damn. The following is the first half of my experience of just getting to the Tribute in Toronto. Please forgive the length, but I needed to tell it, to get to the really good part. You know the part where I SAT RIGHT BEHIND JONI (and beside Rick and Jimmy) at the tribute! In remembrance of those lost yesterday in NYC, Janine When I first read that Joni was coming to Toronto, there was no doubt in my mind ID BE THERE. It was within 500 miles of home, my Joni-lovin pal Betty was in, and when I found out the exact date- I could not believe our good fortune. School was out that day! How lucky can you get? (little did I know) It had been almost 30 years since I had seen her, JT, and Paul Simon on stage for McGovern when I was in college. I knew this could possibly be the last time I would have the chance to see her live. If we were going, then we were getting the best possible seats we could. What? You need an AMEX card to call at the earliest date? No problem. Surely a JONI event would qualify as an exception to be charged on my hubbys business -only AMEX. NIX AY on the AMEX AY! Well, what can one say? Some of us understand the Mitchell effect, and some of us have both feet cemented in the ground. So, whats another piece of plastic crammed in my wallet? My own personal AMEX card comes. It sits out like a sentry keeping its watch. The moment arrives. The day I called for the tickets, I watched the clock like a hawk getting more nervous by the minute. 30 seconds, to go. OK- quit shaking -calm down and dial the number. Someone answers on the first ring. Come on now, which hommage do I wish tickets for? WHO ELSE!!! After I rave about JM and how I have loved her for over 30 years and how I got this AMEX card just to use for this event, this soft-spoken Canadian gentleman tells me he has two, front row center tickets available for me seats # 30 something. I am screaming in his ear. Poor chap. He doesnt seem to mind though, in fact, he seems flattered to be able to offer me something that makes me so happy. I am dancing on a cloud for the rest of the day. In the back of my mind, I am wondering how numbers 36 and 37 can be that great, but front row, nonetheless. We are on a roll. I post to the list and find out other jmdlers were also able to get front row seats. Wonderful! Life is good. Spring comes and goes. So does a long, dry summer. Meanwhile, Betty and I bask in the glow of our good fortune while anticipation builds for our upcoming visit to Toronto, a city neither of us has visited. We get our hotel room, and think, why spend all that time in the car? Lets check the airline rates. Not bad. So, we get a round -trip non- stop early AM Friday flight out of BWI. That way well get there early and have time to relax before the big event. We watch and rewatch the TNT Tribute trying to visualize numerous seating configurations for Joni and her playmates. What kind local Torontonian talent could there be to do her material justice? Will she bring Donald? her parents ? How far away will they be? Will they be in a box or in an open area? Will she eat a banana and smoke cigarettes? Oh, the wonderment of it all. September 11. Life as we know it; no more. Airlines are cutting back. No more Dash 8 semi-hourly flights to Toronto. Flight change to smaller, closer airport (good thing) larger planes, connection in Pittsburgh.(not-so good). Well take it- still saves us lots of hours driving and tickets are paid for. We look forward to our diversion from this madness. We are nervous about flying, but must have faith. Lily Tomlin cancels her Hommage due to US entering Afghanistan. NO!! Joni won't cancel , will she? Great news, a new twist! Joni is going to be there earlier in the day to unveil her star on the Walk of Fame! Can we make it in time, barely, but we will do our best. Then, the night before we were to fly out there is a credible terrorist threat to Three Mile Island, a nearby nuclear plant, and the airport is closed. This is not happening! Guess we will be driving after all. No way will we be able to make the star thing, but at least well get there for the event. We need a hotel for Thursday night in New York state somewhere.... WAIT!!! the airport reopens, air travel resumes and we are told to come ahead as planned. We leave home at 3:45 AM On Oct.19 for the day of our lives. Nothing like that "r o l l e r c o a s t e r of love" for Joni leading us into the Main Event. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 22:59:56 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Card I LOVE your card. But had to when I saw the Joni mention in the great Leonard Cohen interview in the November issue of MOJO magazine (makes Rolling Stone look like Highlites or the weekly circular). When Leonard was asked wether he was aquainted with the prime movers of the '60s popular culture..."I had dinner with Jim Morrison and a number of other people at a restaurant beside the Troubadour in Los Angeles. We exchanged a few words but he was already into the drink and seemed quite swollen and uncomfortable with the diner an himself. Hendrix and I actually jammed together one night in New York. He knew my song Suzanne. he was very gentle; he didn't distort his guitar. I remeber another time I was walking up 23rd street, the street the Chelsea Hotel was on, with Joni Mitchell, a very beautiful woman, and a big limousine pulled up - Jimi Hendrix was in the back seat and he was chatting up Joni from the inside of the limo." As some of you may know...I have a craving to hear what went down at the jam session between Joni and Jimi...now I'd also love to hear what music was made between Joni and Leonard...and perhaps Jimi's version of Suzanne hmmmm. Does anyone out there in the music world know of how we can hire John Oswald and his "Plunderphonics" for a fantasy gig made a virtual reality? On a somewhat unrelated topic...does anyone have a video tape of the VH1 Concert for New York City? I'm out here in the cultural sticks and would love to see a bit of it. I'm good for all sorts of trades in the way of CDs. Just let me know what you may need. Take care, Julian Find the one for you at Yahoo! Personals http://personals.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 02:12:17 EST From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: joni as queen of hollywood in "bel air" How about a remake of "Sunset Boulevard?" We'll call it "Bel Air." Instead of the Norma Desmond part made famous by Gloria Swanson, Joni would play a singer/songwriter who hasn't had a big hit in ages and is desperate to win back the mass adoration of her glory years by getting back to her folkie roots. The Bill Holden role of the down-on-his-luck writer would be played by me, of course. And Larry Klein is my choice for the part of the faithful butler. The film would open with me -- dead and floating face down in Joni's pool, yet somehow narrating the movie from the grave. As detectives fish my bloated and lifeless corpse from the water, I tell the viewers a little bit about how my bullet-riddled body ended up there. "You'll read about it in the late editions, I'm sure," I say in voice over. "You'll get it over your radio and see it on television because an old-time folk singer is involved -- one of the biggest." The scene would dissolve to a time a few months earlier, with me driving my Tacoma while being pursued by from repo men from Toyota Leasing. To ditch them, I pull into the driveway of a mansion in Bel Air. Larry, as the butler, sees me and announces, "Madame is waiting." Mistaking me for a poorly dressed pet undertaker, Larry brings me to a room where a mysterious lady with dark glasses is mourning a dead cat. After I tell the woman and Larry that I am not a feline mortician, I notice that the lady behind the dark glasses is, of course, Joni. "You're Joni Mitchell," I say. "You used to be in the music business. You used to be big." "I AM BIG!" Joni exclaims bitterly. "It's the music business that got small." After dissing the music biz some more ("Look at them in the front offices, the star maker machinery! They took the idols and smashed them. And who have we got now? Some nobodies.") Joni tells me that she has been writing again, and is working on a new album of folk music -- tentatively titled "Salome" -- for David Geffen. I tell Joni that I had no idea she was planning a comeback, and she barks, "I hate that word. It's a RETURN! A return to the millions of people who have never forgiven me for abandoning the dulcimer." When I mention to Joni that I am an ad writer, she decides that I will be a perfect collaborator for the "Salome" project. "Jingles," she laughs, "that's what they want nowadays -- jingles!" She asks me my astrological sign -- Taurus -- and determines that I will be easy to dominate. Joni then shows me some of her "Salome" lyrics, which are truly dreadful, and offers me a freelance writing gig for $500 a week -- including a room above her garage, plus all the champagne and caviar I can handle. Since I need a place to hide from the Toyota Leasing thugs anyway, I take the assignment and move in immediately. As the weeks pass, Joni and I smoke many cartons of cigarettes while working on the new album. She is very generous and buys me lots of fancy clothes, including some very flattering Miyake suits. She even presents me with a gold cigarette box inscribed "Mad about the Smurf." When I protest that she's being too extravagant, Joni explains that money is no object, and that she owns all the rights to her songs which, she reminds me, people are always covering. "Pumping and pumping and pumping out covers," she coos. It soon becomes apparent that Joni is falling head-over-heels in love with me, and as time passes, her behavior grows stranger and stranger. What's more, the album project gets worse every time we work on it. ("What rhymes with Salome?" Joni asks me in one scene. "Cafe au lait?" I suggest. "You're brilliant!" she cries as she covers me with kisses.) We eventually book recording time, and Larry drives us to the studio. As we're pulling into the parking lot, David Geffen sees Joni and drags us all in to a session in progress. At first Joni assumes that Geffen is there to check out her new stuff, but she soon discovers that he is there to work on another project that has nothing to do with her. Joni is humiliated and blames me for everything. We go back to the mansion in Bel Air where Joni slaps me, kicks me in the shins, and then shoots me three times. I fall into her pool, dead, as in the opening of the movie. In the final scene, Joni tunes her dulcimer as she is being led away by the police. And just before the credits roll, she stares eerily into the camera and says, "I'm ready for my sound check, Mr. Geffen." --Bob ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #352 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
