Paul, thank so much for pointing the way to this site. I'm going to have fun trying a lot of these tunings. I'm especially pleased to see Lynne Saner included. I LOVE her song "A Child Once." Imagine my surprise when one day about a year ago, I was talking to my manager. We started talking about music because he had a radio on in his office, tuned to a local folk station. I mentioned that years ago I appeared live on the station a few times. He said his wife had too. I knew his wife's first name was Lynne. Well, after a few minutes of talking generally about the local coffeehouse scene, I finally put 2 and 2 together and said "Your wife's not Lynne Saner, is she???" He laughed and said yes. Well, I BEGGED for a copy of her CD (which I hadn't been able to locate in any music stores). Sadly, she doesn't sing much anymore. And kudos to Sue M and eveyone else who has contributed to the Joni Mitchell guitar site. I daresay ours is one of the most 'scholarly' of fan sites on the Web. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 10:58:24 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: Shadows & Light bio Hey Mark- The Dave solo is fantastic thanks so much! I've been seeing a lot of ads for this movie. Anybody else seen it? I agree that Kevin Kline is very talented. He's also very skilled in comedy. How was Isham's score? It's nice to see that BSN got some exposure. Joni sometimes manages to sneak into things when you least expect her. When I went to see 'Funny Girl' a couple of weeks ago, my friend & I had some time to kill so we went into a bar across the street from the theatre. There was a variety of jazz vocalists playing over the sound system. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Joni singing 'At Last' and then a little later on they played another cut from BSN, don't remember which one. My friend is taking a jazz singing class and occasionally attends open mike night at a local jazz club so of course I had to call it to his attention! Boris (Mark E.) Her fan base is very deep & wide...I just got a call from someone who was in the audience the other night & she asked me what the name of the album Joni did with Mingus & how she could get it (cuz the local record store had no clue)!!!! (I had been sharing stories of Joni as we travelled through her works chronologically & as I was getting ready to play Night Ride Home I had my bass player read a bit about her relation with Mingus...& so I made sure to explain to the audience that I would NOT be playing a song from that album this time around!). In the last few days I have had so many folks tell me they were there or that they had heard about the tribute...lots of great feedback on how much they loved hearing about Joni history so my enourmous gratitude to all of you jmdlers & especially Les & to Jim & Wally's work at jonimitchell.com for providing me with all of this info. People were really fascinated & there may be one or more new jmdl members joining up from SB! To any of you songwriters out there, I really encourage you to do one of these Joni Tributes in your town...you will be AMAZED at how people adore her! One more story...when I was plastering the town with posters...(Jeff created them & used her self-portrait from Turbulent Indigo)...at one of the Borders I had to get permission to put the poster up but when the employee looked at the poster he said OH, JONI! I love Joni, I will make sure to personally get this up!!! ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 20:22:14 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: New Joni Documentary? They've done them for Dylan & The Beatles & The Rolling Stones...speaking of the Handlebar, I had a good time last night sharing a meal with Victor and watching him perform with Cosmic Charlie. Sorta weird to see him playing keyboards in another band, but he sounded GREAT! He had a couple of solos and really put his musicianship on display. He done us proud, y'all. Let's hope he can keep getting some good breaks as he needs some now. As for Cosmic Charlie, they sounded MUCH too tight to be the Grateful Dead! ;~) And the singers sounded just like Garcia & Weir...really bizarre! Also bizarre were the people who were dancing to the band. It more resembled the scene from "Night Of The Living Dead" with everyone shuffling around. But I had a good time, I had to leave after the first set but the people were coming in pretty steady. Mag list The November Los Angeles magazine has a great piece on "L.A.'s Top 100 Songs" covering the '30s through today and written by Steve Erickson. Some of his commentary is just priceless. Joni weighs in at No. 49 for "Blue." Erickson writes "Acid booze and ass, needles guns and grass, lots of laughs..." ..."an epitaph for the 60s to whomever didn't already know they were dead." Most of many all-time favorites are on the list including songs from Waits, Brian Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Charlie Parker, X, GoGos ("part pop tart and part razor blade"), Judy Garland, Emmylou (with great photo included), Smokey, Wanda Jackson, Dylan. Another of my favorite songs - No. 42 "Alone Again Or" by Love - "all of the multiple personalities of this strange band never came together more effectively than here, with the lyric of hippie optimism offset by the ominous melody. Arthur Lee's black punk harmony vocal overshadowing Bryan MacLean's folk soul lead vocal, flamenco guitar threading psycheldelic strings, and Spanish horns that the producer later felt compelled to apologize for when in fact they're the most inspired touch of all. If this was the soundtrack of the Sunset Strip - and it was - it was also a warning of paradise lost." No. 19 the recently discussed "Louie, Louie" - Richard Berry and No. 1 - "A Change is Gonna Come" - Sam Cooke.
