Although I haven't had time to read much yet, this edition of Record Collector also has an article on The Beatles recording the 'White Album', that looks interesting. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Nov 2001 08:23:16 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Psalm To A Seagull <<6. Come and listen to my story 'bout a gal named Joan, She was an only child, Canadian born and grown But then one day she was strummin' on a uke, And all her teenage friends they began to jive & juke (Folk music that is...major chords, 4/4 time) Well the first thing you know Joan picks up a guitar, Starts to writin' songs, says "I'm gonna be a star" Starts to cross the country playing brilliant with no flaws, The people who are listenin' are amazed and drop their jaws... (Major talent, that is...weird tunings, great poetry) So the next thing you know Joan's in the studio, Making her first record so that all the world will know That when it comes to music just forget about the rest, Cuz history will prove that our Joni is the best... (Discography, that is...35 years, countless classics) Everyone's acknowledged now that Joni's great - and how! Hell, even Earl Scruggs has recorded "Both Sides Now", There's only one more thing that we all await with glee, When the release date's finally here & we can hear her new CD! :~) Bob NP: Joan Armatrading, "Stepping Out", live 1977 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 08:56:06 EST From: Chorando6@aol.com Subject: Re:Gay thing/Babs Hi all, I have to say that I do, as a gay man love babs. Always have and always will. I>M>H>O I think its an archetypal thing and the combination of ugly beauty, vulnerable wounded strength, that fabulous over the top acting and a voice to die for like no other. There are qualities that run through all the fag icons that i think Gay men can identify with. Babs life isn't tragic like judys was which is where judys appeal lay, but she does have a thing with the absent father, which i certainly relate to. These combinations, to gay men are hugely appealing. The ugly duckling story was written to describe the experiences of people like babs and gay men all over the world. She knows our lot and we know hers. Not that we are ugly but rather we are seen by many as unappealing. One of the greatest moments shared with me by a fellow gay school mate was at a school reunion he attended. On his arrival he was confronted with a bunch of miserable middle aged over weight disgruntled breeders who looked haggered and spent. He however was full of life, youth and a most potent weapon; an outlook on life that kept him happy and sane. He'd struggled through the Struggle and came up smelling of roses! Gay Men do have the ability to turn the crap thats thrown at them into gold. We are alchemists and as such attract a mixture of jealousy, hatred admiration and love from those around us. Also when you look at big Stars that contribute to fund raising for aids awareness, whos there in the front line? Babs and Liz. The added bonus of Babs appeal is that she mothered a gay son!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 09:07:29 EST From: Chorando6@aol.com Subject: Re:Babs being difficult. Hi all, for the record. When Babs was making yentl there was lots of press coverage in the U.k about her being difficult. The whole crew on that film (mostly british) wrote a letter to the times stating what a great gal she was and what a pleasure she was to work with. Ruben, superman, lazy afternoons and Songbird are pretty wonderful too!! Then again you could do worse than having a listen to What about today or Stony end. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 10:07:00 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: TV Land Honors Joni <> LOL Bob! California (c)2000 by Victor Johnson California, valley of sunshine, Carry me to your golden shore. Wind around the starlit highway, Up above the mountain cliffs. Sweet lady of the canyon, Won't you take me for a ride. Fill me with your perfect vision, Lead me to this holy land. California coming closer, Starry skies and sleepless nights. Early morning passion thunder, And the love keeps pouring out. Walk me through your redwood pastures, Beneath the trees so high and wide. Lay me down in fertile valleys, Morning Glory on the vine. California, take me home, Brighten my southern sky. Sing me an unbroken lullaby, I'll spread my wings, teach me to fly. California, lonely skybird, Fly over ocean of white clouds. Gaze down on a deep, blue heaven, Shining in the sunlit sky. Dream of wooden ships and mermaids, Dolphins jumping in the sea. With no particular destination, California's just around the bend. "Joni's the one singer whose new albums I still rush out to buy," she said. "She's the one I put on whenever I feel overwhelmed." (the Rev) Vince PS: If that doesn't get you to buy the New Yorker, try the articles by Seymour Hersh on our nation's intelligence situation, Hendrick Hertzberg on the House's economic package (he didn't take kindly to it, for cause), the old wo Virgins picture of John and Yoko (selling Absolute vodka), the cartoon with the caption, "We're from the FBI going from house to house making sure that everyone is scared shitless" and for the more flamboyant amongst us, the cartoon on the difference between Wild Bill Hickok and Really Wild Bill Hickok. Onward and upward with the arts. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #347 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
