The images really appeared and she used very little artistic license in depicting them. I don't have the link now for the face of tragedy (will look for it again) but found another link where it shows the two turbaned Arab faces in WTC 2 exactly as Joni depicted them. This link is a memorial to the victims and takes a long time to load. The image in Joni's painting appears about ten to eleven photos into the slide-show and you have to look quick for it. Warning - this memorial is very emotional and may not be everyone's cup of tea. http://www.politicsandprotest.org/ Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 11:19:27 -0000 From: "Jamie Zubairi" Subject: John Kelly I would like to ask him what it is like being a man playing a woman who found it difficult in a male orientated industry! :-) No seriously, I'd like to ask him if he plans to tour to London with his new show. I'd love to see it. Maybe November when she's in town. That would be nice. She might come along after the recording and watch the show next to my booth at the back. And we'd share a sludge of melted ice cream and pie. Otherwise goodbye with my > next email to unsubscribe. You're unsubscribing because of that? Joni did an album of standards because she thought no one else would want to hear her opinion on the world. Her record company probably learned the lesson that Geffen had with her on DED and won't allow her to do anything as unsafe as that. Hence the album of standards and a double album of reinterpreted songs of her own. We know that she has opinions on the current events but do you think she'd want to 'cash in' on them? No, in my opinion. I wouldn't buy it.I'd prefer to listen to something that would take me away from them. I have the media to remind me (updated every half hour) of the World's problems. Humanity needs some succour just to get through the day. Yes, these are complicated times and Joni has always known they were coming, she wanted to put a little bit of love, and compassion back into the air so that it is there for people to grab old of and hold on to like a life jacket. And if you listen to the music of it, it's complex stuff, there's a lot going on, not just simple chords, not just Britney. It must be terrible living in these times, especially so close to Ground Zero. My parents live in East Anglia and they hear daily the flight of military aeroplanes doing exercises, just like they did before the Gulf War, knowing that that sound will eventually be frightening and perhaps killing thousands more innocent people for the sake of the guilty few. The disease of terror is everywhere and these are dangerous times to live in. We can't blame Joni for not providing us with the perfect pill for these times. The world is spinning too fast. We will get her musical interpretation in 3 years time, if we're lucky, when all is said and done, when she may feel that it is no longer valid. Strength comes from within. Strength comes from the people around you, standing together, helping each other. Don't leave because you feel Joni isn't standing with you. Don't leave because you don't feel us standing with you. We are trying to come to terms what this world is doing, what these events means to postal workers, America and Americans, what these events mean to the people of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom wherever. No. No one will address these concerns if you're not online and airing them will they? I'm usually a lurker, as you know but I read people's posts. If there is something I agree to or I can contribute to, I do. If someone needs help, I see what I can commit, either someone else's words of wisdom, or just another calming voice in the throng, to know that you're not alone. You are not alone. My ex lives in New York, she is going through a similar experience, but is afraid to go to Manhattan because she knows of the suffering. How how does she feel like having to perform when all around is suffering, when this could be her last show? But people have still bought tickets, people still want to come, people still need to get back to the garden. My other New York friend, Sarah, a playwright and poet, who lives in Brooklyn and whose mother lives in Manhattan, who she was seperated from for 24 hours on that day, who she had no contact with, whose boyfriend was afraid that she had a schooltrip planned to visit the towers that day that she would have been there. If you want music to describe the times, then listen to Charles Mingus's Black Saint and Sinner Lady which was written in the Sixties, five melodies, all at once, all screaming to be heard, all just as valid as the one over it. Then the lonely piano played by Mr Mingus himself. NP: Black Saint and Sinner Lady, by Charles Mingus Peace Much Joni Jamie Zoob I'm gonna be flamed for this. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 08:33:16 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Today's Articles: October 30 Les, thanks as always for the links to your article database. I enjoyed the one about the 1987 Peltier benefit as I didn't know much about it, and I learned a lot. I wonder what other songs she did besides "Lakota" & "Tax Free"? "Joni Mitchell, supported by a jazz-accented band including saxophonist Wayne Shorter and bassist Larry Klein, followed with a 40-minute set that reinforced her reputation as a daring, independent-minded songwriter and singer. Rather than lean toward her most melodic and best-known early work, she concentrated on recent material, previewing a song ("Lakota") from her upcoming album and offering a dramatic rendition of "Tax Free." The latter tune, from her 1985 "Dog Eat Dog" LP, rips at rightist televangelism with uncompromising ridicule and fury." My opinion, not that anyone asked, is that I hope you can do Music on a full time basis. Karen O'Brien says that some people tried to dissuade our Joni from music, even after her songs were all on the radio as covers! Dylan's manager, Albert Grossman thought she was 'too domestic' as judged by her beautifully decorated home. (?) Can you imagine a man's seriousness about a career being judged by his house?? The song on _Blue_ is one of new love and possibilities, while giving some hint of storms among the rainbows; this version seems to be mainly storms.
