Of course, I bought it immediately because it has a cover of "Blue Motel Room" on it. I ended up buying it through CDQuest.com, but in the meantime I struck up an e-mail conversation with Lorraine. When I told her of my passion/obsession with Joni covers, she said she had also recorded "A Case of You" (inspired by Joni's remake on BSN) but never released it. She sent me a CD of her take on ACOY, and man is it sweet. It's what Joni SHOULD HAVE DONE on BSN instead of smothering it with the oppressive orchestration. Anyway, that's not my point...to finish the story, to return the favor, I made Lorraine a nice compilation of jazz vocal Joni covers. This is the message I just received from her: "I got your CD package today what a treat! Great listening to all those different visions of tunes that have meant so much over the years. It was cool to hear Barangrill- that album kept me sane when I was having hard times as a teen/musician stuck in Milwaukee for about a year of my life....yikes what torture for a CA hippie during the early 70's! Since then I've thought about doing something with that one or with "Electricity" off the same album. Well anyway-I'm blathering and I really have to get ready to go sing tonight. Will include Help Me and Twisted in the set list tonight....and raise a toast to South Carolina and its inhabitants who have extremely good taste." Me again: Those of you who love female torch singers would enjoy "Diva's Diversion". Besides the 7:05 (!!)smokin' take on Blue Motel Room she does a couple other standards and an original or two as well. You can check out soundbites for free at her website:(http://www.gervaismusic.com/pages/discog.html) And you can order her CD from: http://www.theorchard.com/ (It appears as though CD Quest is no longer stocking it! :~( ) Or email her and order it from her directly...you can get an autographed copy, and she's a very nice correspondent as well. I'll add Lorraine onto my "brush with greatness" list! :~) And keep your eyes open; she tours the west coast and as you can see generally always does some Joni in her set. Fye" Subject: Discussion list etiquette (was: new virus alert) Thanks for the virus alert, Kammy, even though it was a false alarm. : ) A request to anyone who might want to forward anything to the list (and I've left the NJC off on purpose so all new subscribers will receive this info): Instead of clicking "Forward," please open a new email document and copy and paste the text you'd like to share. That will prevent the headers, footers, and other forwarding history (including others' email addresses) from appearing on JMDL posts. Same goes for replying to digests. It's better to open a new document, then copy and paste the parts of a particular post you want to reply to, rather than leaving the entire digest on the bottom of your email. Be sure to make the Subject relevant to what you're posting about, too (as opposed to "Re: JMDL Digest V2001 #472"). Thanks! I just walked in through the door from NYC, and noticed that the Jonifest 2001 webpage is up a little prematurely. Glad that you got to see the beginnings of the page, but there is more to come! I listened to Lorraine's sampler and she sounds terrific. Incidentally, could you or someone please offer some advice: while listening to the sampler there are 2 seconds of music then 5 seconds of blank then same thing again. It also happened last time I tried to listen to song samples on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I just dowloaded the MP3 free software (Thompson) in Lorraine Gervais' site and it still does it.
