Went to see Tuck and Patti last saturday. At first I was worried because their February 2001 concert had been cancelled due to Tuck's broken ankle. Well they showed up and immediately started playing "Love Warriors", a very ` propos song. Following were my favorite songs from the last 2 CDs, including Songs for the Souls (about the departed) and You ain't Seen Nothing Yet (hot tip about how to keep your love affair burning), both from "Taking the Long Way Home". Tuck and especially Patti were in great shape because they had just spent 1 week in Paris for their 20th anniversary, and they'll be back late spring 2002 after doing quite a bit of traveling in between. She confessed Paris does it to them every time because this is where their love started. Let me tell you, this lady has an incredible stage presence and a capacity to convey emotions up to par with Joni's! The songs I mentioned are masterpieces and I feel she's really trying to help fellow human beings by passing on her life experiences. One funny thing: the ventilation was off so she would sing verses to the club people asking them to turn it on, etc, all the while continuing the song. Anyway, I'm so convinced that a JONI fan couldn't dislike it, that I'll gladly refund the price of admission to anyone not satisfied by a show. Now, for those of you who are contemplating a trip to Paris next spring (or any other time), I'll offer an extra bonus: JONI's own suede 3 piece outfit with purse (all 3 signed by Joni), purchased in L.A.'s a Star is Worn used star clothing shop in 88. It's yours to see and feel and even put on if you can fit in it. (Luckily, my wife does fit. You won't believe how many ladies chickened out when offered this golden opportunity!) Rick's link didn't work for me, so I went and found the article/interview, and here it is Diana Krall a huge Joni Mitchell fan Dan Aquilante The Province Sunday, October 07, 2001 DIANA KRALL Where: The Orpheum When: 8 p.m. tonight and Monday. Tickets: $47.50, $57.50 and $62.50 at Ticketmaster. In the world of jazz, Diana Krall is the "It" girl. The celebrated 35-year-old Canadian has model good looks, pianistic grace -- and an old-fashioned voice that fairly smolders. Hailed by her fans and critics, Krall followed up her 1999 Grammy-winning disc, When I Look in Your Eyes, with The Look of Love. This new album, in which she's lushly accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, gathers 10 ballads and bossa nova tunes. Among the standards on this disc are "Cry Me a River," "S'Wonderful," "The Look of Love" and a beautiful, Spanish-language rendition of "Besame Mucho." For those outside (and inside) the jazz community, Krall's nomination for the top prize -- album of the year --at the '99 Grammys was a shocker because it was the first jazz record to get that nod in 25 years. She lost (to Santana) but did snag the Grammy for best jazz album. And she got everyone's attention that night. Since then, Krall has been touring, stitching together The Look of Love and working in TV and film. She's appeared on three seasons of Sex and the City and her music has been featured in the films Autumn in New York, Random Hearts and The Score. Krall obviously loves what she does but calls it "a lot of hard work." Still single but seeing a writer she preferred not to name, Krall lives in Manhattan and described herself as "pretty happy." Following is her interview with the New York Post. Post: How did the Grammy nomination for album of the year affect yourcareer? Krall: A lot of people who had never heard of me, and may not have heard of me, listened -- not only the public but people in the industry. Post: Was that the most important night of your career? Krall: It was but I think the most important event for me was the tribute concert for Joni Mitchell that I was part of. Post: Why? Krall: At that show, I saw there were no limits to music. I walked away with the attitude, "Hey, you wanna try and box me in? Tell you what, don't try." Post: Has Joni Mitchell, a sister Canadian, always been a hero to you? Krall: She's huge but I only really got into her music over the last four years. I had (her record) Mingus when I was 17 years old but I wasn't a Joni-head. I am now. She is amazing and we've gotten to know each other. Post: Would you invite her to sing on one of your songs? Krall: I wouldn't have the audacity to think that she would want to sing with me. I have to borrow a line from Wayne's World and say, "I'm not worthy." Post: Is there one Joni song you'd pick as your favourite? Krall: I listen to "A Case of You" every night. Post: You've shied away from comparisons of your storytelling vocals with Frank Sinatra's. When asked about a Joni Mitchell duet, you say, "I'm not worthy." Given all your accomplishments, your modesty seems out of place. Krall: I don't let myself think about all that. That's how I protect myself. Post: You're a big star. Krall: I'm a working jazz musician. Post: What is jazz? Krall: That's really hard. If I were talking to kids, I'd tell them to watch the Ken Burns documentary on jazz. I'd tell them to watch and see what they like, see what interests them. Then I'd tell them to go to the library and listen to more of it. Post: You've described how to find out if you like jazz, not what it is. Krall: What I was saying is, that's how you discover jazz is an art form for people. It isn't as intellectual and elitist as some people would make it out to be. Jazz is all emotion. I can't put that into words but I can make you feel it by snapping my fingers. Jazz gives me an unbelievable palette to express myself. Post: You touch people with your ability to paint with emotion. Who has inspired you? Krall: Frank Sinatra. He used to do this bit with the audiences in his concerts. He'd ask them to imagine they were his bartender and he'd start singing "Angel Eyes." His cigarette would be dangling from his lips and he'd become a drunk at the bar talking about his girl. That's very powerful stuff for me. NEW from Yahoo! (sjc) Hi, all, Just some musings before I jump a jet plane tomorrow night, with more than the usual amount of nervousness. I was walking all over the City (SF) today, enjoying some of my favorite views from some of the hills. And I kept on seeing "white vapor trails" across the not-so bleak terrain. Am I imagining it, or are there more of them in the sky now? Maybe I just didn't notice them before because the City (and I) are always enshrouded in fog. Leave it to Bob Muller to know about the Stewart and Gaskin version of Amelia on their album Spin. I had one or two of their albums in the '80's (I particularly remember their version of "It's my Party" from around '82 or '83). Are they still recording? Easily available? "Funny day, looking for laughter and finding it there..." I sat down in one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Castro -- it's the one over Daddy's, for those jmdlers in the city who know the Castro -- it overlooks the famous Castro Theatre, and I was gazing absentmidedly at the marquee when I noticed that on Nov 9th, John Waters and Tammy Faye (Baker, I presume) will be making a live appearance. Together? Can't you imagine her being cast in one of his movies? What delightful camp! This is something I must see. "Formula music./Girlie guile!/Genuine junkfood/For juveniles!" I actually watched CMC for half an hour (a syndicated show that gets broadcast on, I guess, various independent stations across California) to see what the kids were up to. Then I went over to MTV. I do this once in a while, and very occasionally, it pays off. (I think it's how I was introduced to Ben Folds Five, Beth Orton, Belle and Sebastion and possibly even Alanis Morrissette...) I was impressed with the complexity of the choreography at first, until it began to seem to me that it was more or less the same in each video. Lots of synthesized, layered background, both vocal and instrumental. The song I liked the best (on CMC) was by a young black male singer whom the idiot dj never identified (he was more interested in cracking jokes I couldn't understand). The song had "content" both lyrically and musically, but I wonder whether I'll ever see it again and have the presence of mind to write down some of the lyrics so one of you might know who it was. The only other video that struck as being at least well-produced was by Brintey Spears (something about being a slave -- very sexual -- how does her Christian momma allow this kind of thing???) But I liked the end of the video, when the orgy broke up because one of the young men noticed that it was raining, called out to the others and the orgy broke up!! ("We used to clear the floor just to watch the rain cone down...") Looking forward to seeing the leaves in color, hugging my mom and sisters, meeting jmdlers Bob Murphy and (ihopeihope) Ashara, and getting back in one piece.
