One example is the book of conversations between Eli Wiesel and Cardinal O'Connor. Americans know so little about the Islamic faith and see only the fundamentalists or Israel's enemies and think they're representative of all Muslims. That can't be, anymore than Jerry Falwell represents all Christians. Even though there will always be simple-minded thugs looking for any excuse to harm someone, it's easy now for lots of people to see all Muslims as the enemy when there's so little information available about their beliefs. I hope efforts are made soon to educate us all. I keep these examples in mind: Richard Thompson is a devout Muslim; another devout Muslim is Rumi, a Sufi mystic from the 1200s. This is how he expresses his faith: Be certain in the religion of Love there are no believers or unbelievers. Love embraces all. Debra Shea P.S. While I chatted with my friend Azeem tonight, the tv was on and it was good to see and hear in the background the New York Mets once again doing their job, and tonight playing the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yeah, sounded good. The Mets won. Tonight that doesn't matter much. I was just glad to see them again. Here's something else Rumi wrote: It's good to leave each day behind, like flowing water, free of sadness. Yesterday is gone and its tale told. Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 04:35:40 EDT From: PMcfad@aol.com Subject: Polly Jean i've been carrying this new yorker around in my brief case since august. there was a decent article on pj that contained this: harvey broke free of convention. her songs are short stories, not confessions and her own identity has little to do with the different voices she chooses to embody. whereas janis joplin's blues were janis joplin's blues. harvey isn't interested in self revelation. she doesn't prettify the blues as bonnie raitt sometimes does; nor does she judge it an outdated form that needs jazzing up as Joni Mitchell did on "Mingus". thought it was an interesting statement. i bought the mag for the lead article on radiohead which was pretty good but had nothing new in it. radiohead was on the cover of rolling stone a few months ago and in that article, thom yorke said something like this: people want us to record something like "the bends" again...well, they don't ask artists to paint the same picture again. that sounds familiar. pat np. planet telex - everything is broken - why can't you feel good. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 11:12:20 +0200 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: RE: backlash towards muslims On 18 September 2001 09:42, dsk [SMTP:dsk11@bellatlantic.net] wrote: > Here's something else Rumi wrote: > > It's good to leave each day behind, > like flowing water, free of sadness. > Yesterday is gone and its tale told. > Today new seeds are growing. Oh, if only I had the time! But just reading through some recent digests, I felt I had to post this. People were asking about Jeff Buckley, and several ones mentioned being fans of Tim, his father. Now one of the reasons why I lurked for so long on JMDL without contributing, as I said was lack of time, especially as I am already on a Tim Buckley discussion list (called Starsailor) and I wanted to stay loyal to that commitment. Anyway, I feel I have to share this info with you. (If you are a JM purist, jump straight to point 5, which talks about Joni!) 1) Yes, Jeff Buckley's 1994 album Grace is wonderful, sublime. Since his tragic death in 1997 his popularity has continued to rise, also in Europe where there is quite a Jeff Buckley cult. (It does help that he was also a very very pretty boy...) There are several good Jeff Buckley internet sites to check out. 2) His father Tim released 9 or so albums in about the same number of years before he died at the age of 28 in 1974. His output is amazing, and developed from folk to jazzy experimental and funk. There are again some very good web sites, let me just mention http://www.geocities.com/jzero2149/TimBuckleyandFriendsindex.html. I have no time to look up the others but if you're interested, have a look, it's quite easy, e.g. the Tim Buckley Archives. 3) There is a recent biography of both Jeff and Tim Buckley, called Dream Brother by David Browne, it is still quite easily available. 4) There will be a Tim Buckley tribute concert in the Royal Festival Hall in London on Wednesday 26 September. Anybody who wants to make it should still be able to get tickets. Maybe see you there? 5) And finally, a connection with Joni! I realised myself that there were many similarities between Joni and Tim Buckley (their high output, their strong independence and personal style, their musical evolution from folk to jazz influences, their use of the voice as an instrument...) and when I mentioned this on the Starsailor list, I was told there was actually a section called Blue ... Blue Afternoon (http://www.geocities.com/jzero2149/BlueBlueAfternoon.html) making exactly the same comparison on the Room 109 site (another site dedicated to Tim Buckley, named after one of his songs). So do check it out! Hey ho, it's back to work for me now! To see America come together and help each other out is inspiring and heartbreaking, because we finally realize what we have and how fragile life as we know it is. I fear that the Muslim community will take much abuse and that their faith and way of life will be lived in fear of retaliation by ignorant people, but I am not going to say that I am surprised or shocked by this backlash, because I am not. I am not the most politically correct person in the world and the open door policy of our government has been too willing to let people into this country that intend to harm us. The very fact that family members of Osama bin Laden own a condo in Boston is enough to enfuriate me to no end. The fact that some of these hijackers were allowed into our country, into our school systems, only to use this against us is horrifying, yet it went on right under our noses. Until last Tuesday we all felt safe, dare I say invincible, to such types of attacks yet in the course of an hour four planes were hijacked, and 6,000 people lost their lives. Is it fair to say that from this day forward I will never be able to look at a young muslim man and not think that he was sent here to kill me because I am American? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't, but that prejudice is now instilled in me and will never go away. These followers of bin Laden-the Al Qaeda-want to kill us, they hate everything we stand for, everything our country stands for, and will stop at nothing to do so. They are not your typical ignorant terrorist either. They outsmarted the American Intelligence Community which our tax dollars support. Several posts said that CNN posted pictures from 1991, but that is not the case. "In Nablus, on the West Bank, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, and in East Jerusalem hundreds openly celebrated, shooting victory shots in the air and handing out candy (a practice done by Palestinian terrorist groups when one of their own succeeds in killing jews)". These are serious threats to our freedom, and by ours I mean everyone in America whether they be black, white, catholic, baptist, jewish, muslim, islamic, or from f*&%*&*ing Mars. 62 countries lost people last Tuesday, but in America we lost a sense of safety that for the past fifty years has not been challenged. There is a faceless enemy that walks among us and unfortunately I can no longer be objective about it, because I can't honestly say that I believe our government can protect us from it. With this post I don't mean to infuriate or scare people this is just the way I feel. I feel as if I woke up on Tuesday from a 27 year coma and realized that my trivial problems, were just that. I can't remember a time I ever really gave thanks for what I have and that made me ashamed because I have been afforded so much in my life. A good family, a good education, and of course good taste in music, but also the reality that I live in a country not torn apart by war and destruction which is why so many people do come here. America, land of the free, should be a place people seek solace, but who those people are is going to have to come under scrutiny. I don't post often, but reading the posts from this past week has been therapeutic and knowing that no one that posts regularly to this list has been harmed is nothing short of divine intervention. That is the reason there is no njc tag because although I have never met any of you personally you are all a part of my daily routine and bring me to a place of normalacy which has become a fleeting notion. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 16:40:22 EDT From: Reuben3rd@aol.com Subject: poptoones Has anyone seen a disc called "Girls In The Valley"...I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago. "What I am Doing On My Summer Vacation" I know some of you may think this announcement may be inappropriate, considering the situation this past week, and I apologize if you are offended. I look at this post as a light in the darkness, and something for us all to look forward to at a time when it seems like hope and looking towards the "future" is far away. With that "ray of hope" I offer this post and this announcement to all, Joni-onlys and the regular list as well. Jonifest has grown by leaps and bounds every year. Each year, I strive to improve on the Fest before, learning each year from the one before. The New England Labor Day Jonifest has grown from a one-day, 25 person, intimate house gathering, to a full-blown, three day festival complete with multiple meals, sound, lighting, and large numbers. We have now expanded to the point where we have outgrown the house in Topsfield. Also, many of you thought it was difficult this year to be spread out in area hotels, and have requested that we be under one roof next hear. Because Labor Day weekend is such a busy holiday, I started thinking about the 5th anniversary of the New England Labor Day Joni Fest as soon as you all left my house a few short weeks ago. I have been in negotiations for the past several weeks with a place that I feel is an absolutely "perfect" fit for us. "Full Moon" is a rustic resort on 100 acres of natural beauty in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is a wonderful place with an emphasis on music and musical gatherings. Sal and I drove out to Catskills this past Saturday to check out the Full Moon property firsthand. Here are my impressions: The rooms are very simple and rustic; some accommodations have shared baths. This is *not* the Sheraton, by any means, but the rooms are very clean and accommodating. There is a beautiful spring-fed swimming pool and a small duck pond on the property. In addition to the performance space, there are several smaller spaces in which to gather that could be used for workshops, jamming or hanging out. The buffet-style meals were excellent and filling, and included many locally grown vegetables. Through much time and energy on both sides, Full Moon and I have reached an agreement that we both feel comfortable with. There will be many changes to what we have known to be Jonifest in New England, but I believe they are all WONDERFUL changes, and will enhance our experience of community, music, connecting, and having a good time!! Considering this will be the 5th Anniversary of this particular Fest, I think it is a great time for these changes. Here are the details: 1) Because Labor Day weekend is Full Moon's busiest weekend of the whole year, they wanted me to guarantee a complete sellout of 120, which was too much of a personal risk and liability for me. So, the date for Jonifest 2002 had to be changed to August 23-26. (Arriving anytime on Friday, and leaving on Monday) I truly hope that will not be a problem for anyone, and also hope that some of you that weren't able to come "because" it was Labor Day weekend, will be able to join us this year. (David Lahm? Marian? Terry? others?) 2) Obviously, we can't call this the "New England" anything, because it will now be in New York State, so we will have to think of a new name. 3) The only way to sign up for this weekend is to sign up and pay for the entire weekend, even if you do not eat all the meals, or stay all 3 nights. Extenuating circumstances will be considered only *after* the minimum requirements are met. 4) Please know that if I decide to go ahead with this, I will be **personally** guaranteeing the rental of this entire property with certain minimums. This amounts to a HUGE amount of money, risk and liability. However, we definitely have a great track record, Jonifest has grown every single year, and more and more people are already talking about joining us that haven't joined us before. My vision: My vision of the weekend is three separate nights of scheduled performances instead of one long day and night. Friday night might be spent either jamming, or perhaps we could talk 2 or 3 of the professional musicians on the list to take an hour each to perform. (David Lahm? Gregg Cagno? Bryan Thomas?) Saturday and Sunday nights would be scheduled similarly to the way it's been the last few years, with the amount of performance time divided into the number of people that want to play. Of course, we will have lots of sing-a-longs as well. Days might be spent jamming, participating in workshops, (Marian? Claud? Anne?) time at the pool, rehearsing, walking in nature, connecting with each other. We will have the entire property for the entire weekend, so it's really only limited by our imagination. Of course, I will be welcoming input from everyone. I also envision people possibly bringing their significant others to share in the weekend with them. There are lots of other area interests, including some great fishing spots, antiquing, and of course the town of Woodstock is very close. ~~~~~The date is guaranteed to us *only* after a deposit is made. Once that happens, not only are we guaranteed the space, but we "have" to fill the numbers, otherwise, it comes out of my pocket personally.~~~~~~~ So..... this is what I need from you: As soon as possible, please go to the following website that Les has put together for me, and take a look at the pictures we took at Full Moon this past Saturday. I have included descriptions of accommodations as well as buildings. From there, you can also access a link to the website for Full Moon. Please check it out thoroughly and e-mail me privately with the following information: 1) Are you interested in going to Jonifest at Full Moon August 23-26, 2002? If no, why not? If yes, please answer the following questions: 2) On a scale of 1-10, (1 being "a little", and 10 being a "definite", how interested are you in attending this Fest? 3) Are you willing to commit to a 3 day weekend? 4) Are you willing to send in a $75-$100 NONREFUNDABLE deposit? (Refundable only "if" and when the minimum requirements and expenses are met, and paid "after" the Jonifest weekend.) 5) Which of the many options for accommodations are you interested in? 6) Do you have any other concerns or comments? Once I have gathered all the information, I will make a decision as to whether there is enough interest to move forward with this, and I will start asking for deposits. I truly hope you are excited about this possibility as I am!! Hi Julius! I just finished watching it. First song was Find the Cost of Freedom. They're second song was a song that Nash had written, "Send Me Half Your Angels" (I think) after the Oklahoma bombing. "What I am Doing On My SummerVacation" Ashara, This is great! What a comfortable looking and beautiful place! I like that it's a non-holiday weekend and that you've let us know so far in advance. Aahh, look at all that lush greenery. I say YES to this! Will send you answers to your questions privately, probably tomorrow when I've had a chance to look at the pictures again. Thank you Ashara. This is a wonderful thing you've done. Thanks Rose, I just read on the CSN list that they also did sing "My Country Tis Of Thee" to a Michael Hedges guitar track.
