Some great songs got buried and lost in studio gimmickry. Also, the songs she co-wrote with Klein forced her to pair music to a lyrical structure she was not used to. She comments in interviews that Klein writes in much choppier word structure than she does, and some of the songs feel that "force". But I don't throw out the dog with the bathwater. DED has some marvelous moments, and some great songs that Joni recasts in an unplugged fashion on other recordings which showcases their greatness. I watched it happen on a TV at my car dealer, I came home and watched the TV until my eyes wouldn't stay open at about 1.30am our time. I spent a long time trying to get calls through to New York, to friends and list members there. I spent most of the next day watching the TV. Today I had a business meeting in a UK establishment that was at awareness level amber (second highest). I listened to the radio the whole time until my car broke en-route. I got home, and have had the radio on most of the time since. I'm about to switch the TV back on. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been close to or in tears. In the UK, I think that while we're feeling a touch less threatened (although the threat is still real: we're the USA's closest and most public ally) but probably _more_ helpless. In spite of the fact that I have in the past received similar private emails (from Marcel) to the one that Debra posted here, I was willing to give Marcel a second chance & meet him in person. This was due to Michael's posts regarding the other side of Marcel. It is true, Marcel does have another side & I am glad I was at this year's Jonifest to experience this in person. I do not understand how someone could be so different in person, in writing about music & then so mean-spirited to certain people in private posts. I experienced both extremes. I wish you happiness and we will miss your presence in this community. I know that the decision that Les had to make to unsubscribe Marcel from the list had to be a painful and difficult decision and I have told him these things just like I'm telling you. I support him and I hope someday we can all be together again and work out our differences. The rules of this list have been set forth really clear. For those who are not familiar with them or need to review them again, they're put forth on the JMDL page before you subscribed. I feel really sad for all concerned that things had to come to this. I don't know what the answer is, but I hope we find one. One thing that I've learned is that conflict will just lead to more conflict. No one really wins. I'm sure Debra is right from her point of view as well as Marcel feels he's right from his, Colin from his... I pray that there is a return of camaraderie and a strong sense of community feeling and that we don't abuse and insult one another. A reminder of what brought us all together here in the first place, Joni Mitchell's art and music. I would really feel ashamed if she were to subscribe to this list and witness the insults and negative behavior that has been going on here lately. What do you think she'd say or do? And this could very well happen. She mentioned someday of the possibility of getting a computer. None of us really know one another. I met Marcel in New England this past Labor Day and I have to admit, I had some reservations, so I walked up to him and shook his hand. He really is a talented musician and it saddens me that he's gone. I mentioned to Alison, that he reminded me a lot of my brother Nick who is a very complex person, I might add. At some point Marcel came up from behind me and stroked my hair. I felt relaxed in his presence and not at all threatened by him and no, there was no hatred. Know that I'm going trough some really difficult times right now. I'm not a perfect person. I'm only human like the rest of you all. I've had my fair share of failed relationships with people. I only ask that you appreciate the time I took out of my life to reach out to this list. Sorry in advance for the NJC. He doesn't have a computer at home and quit his job a while ago, so doesn't have access to a computer. I don't think he'd mind if I let you all know he's ok. He was at home on 23rd Street on the west side when it happened and like everyone here was in shock about it all and trying to make some sense of it, if that's even possible ever. He talked about Alison's great difficulty on Tuesday morning. She had planned to leave for Utah on Monday, driving a truck and accompanied by a friend, and waited to leave on Tuesday instead. So on Tuesday morning, all of her belongings were packed in the truck, the planes hit the towers and all the bridges and tunnels to the city were closed almost immediately so she couldn't leave, didn't want to unpack, really wanted to get out of here, didn't want to leave the truck with all her stuff in it on the street overnight if she had to stay until Wednesday, all of that on top of knowing of and feeling the horror that was happening downtown. Jeff said she called the police station in upper Manhattan and they told her she could perhaps get out by going all the way up the west side, thru Harlem and Washington Heights, and go over one of the bridges up there. When I talked to Jeff he didn't know if she'd been successful and figured she'd be back if she hadn't found a bridge to cross over. In one of the messages to the list, Julius mentioned that Alison had called from Ohio, so apparently she is safely on her way home. Thanks Julius for passing that info on. Alison herself will probably let you all know what happened as soon as she's able to. One of the happy thoughts that crossed my mind as I was walking home on Tuesday was thinking that she had left the day before and would then be safely on the road near upstate New York, where it would be green and fresh and not at all covered with ash. It made me sad on Tuesday to hear that that had not been her experience. I'm glad to know that she's on her way home now. Someone politely and respectfully suggested to me that if I feel overwhelmed, that I scroll past the offending postings, or subscribe to the Joni Only list instead. I hope s/he didn't think I was suggesting censorship -- I was overwhelmed with what was going on in the world, not with the jmdl!! Anyway, the point was well taken. A few minutes ago I heard a loud rumbling, explosive sound in the distance. I went to the porch to see what it was...a thunder storm. I can't remember another time that I hadn't been able to recognize the sound of thunder for what it is. The following lines immediately ran through my head: "No tanks have ever rumbled through these streets And the drone of planes at night has never frightened me" Life is very different now. I thought someone reported this fact earlier this morning. I'm glad to know that he died a second time. There was a kind of golden age on this list - for years. Now, it is hopeless and stupid, childish and ridiculous. No judgement, bad judgement. It is permanent and perpetual, it seems. So much so, that it has silenced me almost completely. Have a good break. And come back some time soon. Few know Joni like you do. The list needs you. This list is just like anything else that is real...life for instance. I could say that life itself is hopeless and stupid, childish and ridiculous but I don't believe that for a second. This has been said now several times but in the past few days, I have seen this list bond together like it never has before and the support from people has been overwhelming. It's not even worth debating. Victor Victor Johnson http://www.cdbaby.com/victorjohnson "Velveteen rabbits and moonbeams, Come when you lay down your head. I disagree with you categorically and feel personally affronted. We are human beings, and as such we're imperfect, but I believe we are all sincere in our admiration of Joni. How dare you pontificate, stand in judgement and sterotype 800 individuals? I'm biting back hard on my anger at your offensive behavior. I've been on this list for 5 years and I'm still fascinated, heartened, educated, enlightened, touched and encouraged by what transpires here...as much as ever. Maybe you should take a break and come back when you can appreciate again, if ever. - -Julius np: Miles of Aisles ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #285 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
