Oh my GAWD! Those post fest blues won't go away. I miss everybody too. I caught the earlier 5:00 flight(avoiding an hour and 40 minute wait at the airport) and got to the airport about 8:20 but I had to take the Marta train to my car and then drive an hour back to Athens. I turned on the radio and listened to Debussy "Image" which was kind of nice to drift into as I was still in a dreamy state. It truly was the most incredible weekend ever! We all worked so well together, "...everybody was singing and dancing and sharing and having fun..." The warmth, and the welcome is beyond words. I want to thank Steve Polifka for inviting me to sing along with him, Claudia for blending her voice so beautifully with mine (singing those James Taylor songs on the drive to the train station will stay with me for a long time), Paz for accompanying me on "Way Over Yonder", Chris Marshall and Victor for the smooth and tight bass playing. And what can I say about "My Old Man." Steve Mixon has a heart as big as the mountains, and the brains and talent to go along with it. We're already talking about the songs we want to play next year. I'm sure we'll inspire some new friends to sign up along with us. Ashara, you are such an inspiration! Steve has already applied for a high tech job in MA with the hope that we can see you more than once a year (and continue giving you mandolin lessons!) Congratulations to Scott and Jody for buying their first New England home. We hope to be your neighbors as well. Gregg, it was a true pleasure to meet a new friend of spirit. You are such a genuine person with great guitar chops. Steve and I listened to your CD in the car and were blown away by your songwriting. We hope you make it out to the Central Valley of California so you can be our guest. Bob Muller, dancing close and slow with you made me feel like a teenager again. I look forward to our collaboration next year on "Cool Water," and yes, I will convince you to give "Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm" another chance... Chuck, thank you for inviting me to sing along on "Sweet Bird" and thanks for Jeff for seamlessly playing along on guitar. Chuck, next year Claudia and I have to accompany you on "The Gallery." Mr. Epstein, such a class act with a beautiful smile. My gift to you will be in the mail shortly. I'm grateful for the time we shared, please start practicing piano again. Mr. Van Tiel - a generous soul with a wealth of knowledge and mischevious grin. You're just plain lovable. Wally K., Steve and I talked about how much we enjoyed your set during the plane ride home, I'll never forget, "Amoeba, it was just a false alarm...." Anne, your voice is as sweet and warm as your hugs. It takes a lot of courage to be the first performer up on stage, you go girl! Mags and Brian show us how much fun it is to be in love, I wish there was more time to spend with you two... Oh my gawd, it's 7:00am and I have to be at work in an hour. Real quickly, Kay, Amy and Alison - I hope we can collaborate on some songs next year, I loved your singing. How about "Shadows and Light?" "Time, where does the time go, I wonder where the time goes..." It just seemed that there wasn't enough time to spend with all the people I wanted to get to know better. "Fan Dance" by Sam Phillips (Nonesuch / WB) 2001 Sam's new disc is dry (as usual), and almost sounds like an album of demo's. Some songs are very short and sound almost unfinished. The album as a whole is only 33 minutes long. Ultimately however, she's quite rewarding--with lyric's that are always intelligent and thought provoking. The best song is probably the single, "Five Colors." And the string (cello) arrangement by Van Dyke Parks on "Wasting My Time" sounds like a cross between The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" and Bernard Herrmann's "Psycho" score. I also like her piano-based "Edge Of The World" as well as the title track. All in all, it's not as great as her "Martinis & Bikinis" album from 1994. More similar to 1996's under-appreciated "Omnipop." Anyway, I think her sound is unique and distinctive--and she remains interesting at the very least. "Life On A String" by Laurie Anderson (Nonesuch / WB) 2001 Probably better than the Sam Phillips, this is a great return to form for Laurie Anderson. It reminds me of her wonderful 1989 album "Strange Angels," with some truly incredible songs. If you're unfamiliar with her music, Laurie was (and is) a real ground-breaker in pop/avant-garde music--pioneering a new kind of music in much the same way Laura Nyro and our beloved Joni Mitchell did years ago. The title track is simply a knockout! "Pieces And Parts" is brilliant, and "One White Whale" is great too. "Dark Angel" features a lush, almost syrupy string arrangement (again by Van Dyke Parks), and "Here With You" is an instrumental featuring her own violin. All things considered, this is definitely one of her very best records. Highly recommended. For some reason, the 'production' on both this and the new Sam Phillips record reminds me of Nyro's recent "Angel In The Dark" in their unadorned, demo-like quality. "Vespertine" by Bjork (Elektra / WB) 2001 This record is exotic and beautiful, with gorgeous string arrangements by Vince Mendoza (who worked with Joni Mitchell on her "Both Sides Now" album last year). This is probably Bjork's finest hour. Her singing is better than ever, and the compositions and performances are utterly fascinating. My favorite songs so far are "Pagan Poetry," "Sun In My Mouth" and especially "Unison"--not to mention "Heirloom" and "It's Not Up To You." It's a rather consistent listening experience without any major clunkers, and much better than last years "Selmasongs" (the EP from her film "Dancer In The Dark"), which ambitiously tried to incorporate industrial music with show tunes. If you like lush, elegant music that's challenging and a little bit out of the ordinary, you'll probably like this. It's truly lovely and extremely original--unlike anyone else I know of. Anyone else heard these yet? If so, post some opinions... LONG Hey all you People! I am SO GLAD I finally came to a JoniFest. Ashara, you are a GODDESS. Lord knows how you put up with all us freaks... Thank you PATRICK for finally convincing me with cigarette burns and other assorted emotional blackmail that I should really go... you were right, I had a great time!! BTW, Patrick, on the ride home Alison and Jeff and Rose and I were marveling at how you keep your pulse on as many aspects of popular culture as possible (I had made a comment on how it was so great that there was no TV, and I was corrected -- you had to keep up with the tennis!), and then I mused that there really should be a Patrick Leader Action Figure collection... Hang Out Patrick. Dancer Patrick. Critic Patrick. Pool Shark Patrick. TV Patrick. Bar Stool Patrick. I'm open to further suggestions... I too will have a go at summarizing some high points... "We smoked real good... FOR FREE" is definitely a highlight, along with "THE GANJA LINE/THE GANJA LINE/THE GANJA LINE" (Bob, insert elephant call here). I laughed harder than I have laughed in ages... "Guesses based on what each stash of time and ganja's touching..." Steve Polifka, you are INSANE! I love it!!!! (and I haven't forgotten about the oils, either, baby...) Hey, next year let's sing Carey: "Carey get out your stash/and I'll get out some papers/come on down to the Mermaid Cafe/and we'll get high tonight... MON." OK, OK, OK, I'll stop... Weather: FANTASTIC. COuldn't have asked for better... Anne Sandstrom and Bob Mueller, thank you so much for the music organization and the emceeing, respectively; Bob, if you're too sick of it next year, I hereby nominate Jimmy to be Emcee -- but liquor him up first! Was so psyched to meet the legendary Paz (and that's PAHZ, not PAZZ), loved your music, loved trying out the VG8, loved your entrepreneurial spirit, what with arranging for so much great music; loved the shrimp! One day I'll show up on your doorstep and you'll wonder what the cat dragged in... Claudia, it was such a joy to sing with you, your renditions of Joni and Sandy and others -- all great -- but your original songs are GREAT and you must come to NYC... John, thanks for the tips, the support, and of course, THE CHOCOLATE... Alison, DON'T GO!! You too will wonder someday soon what the hell the cat dragged in... Utah yeehaw... you sang Townes so beautifully, DON'T STOP... Yael and Lamadoo, great to meet you, thanks so much for sharing your room with me... Yael, you sounded great, keep it up!! Rose it was so nice to spend more time with you and thanks a million for the driving... it's a good thing this weekend is over, actually, because a few more days, and I would most definitely have crossed the divide from "social smoker" to SMOKER. Now, Rose, why would you remind me of cigarettes?... ;-) ... Gregg Cagno, what a true pleasure to hear you play -- you're goin' places, baby! Oh, and you know that every woman there -- yes, ALL of them -- wants to marry you, right? Just keep 'em guessing and you'll expand your fan base exponentially... I want to pick your brain about the electronics in your guitar, but I'll email you separately about that (and about other sweet nothings... heh heh heh... and you thought Alison was the only hussy in the bunch...{oh, and Stephen Epstein, if Alison won't put out, I will!} ) ... Kate and Jeff, wonderful to hear you, I love the combo of the California sound and the country-rock sound you have going... Jeff Clark, great playing, I admire your Joni tuning scholarship, let's get together soon... VICTOR!! All right, next year, there WILL be a fully orchestrated, operatic rendition of "War Pigs." I swear to you that I will learn the lyrics between now and then. It was great to hang out with you. I am awed by your energy, your musical adventurousness and your sense of the absurd... Chris Marshall, turn that damned video cam off!! Your bass playing was great, I loved the addition of the Jaco thread to the music that everyone wove... we'll have to attempt Coyote next year... this is getting REALLY LONG and I haven't even made it through half the things I wanted to say... so I'll say that this is Part One. Part Two to follow... So glad I joined you all this year.... :-) Kay Ashley ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 00:01:43 -0400 From: "jlamadoo, home account" Subject: RE: Colvin/Babies/Gay? So....
