Gorgeous cover (IMO) - contemporary picture of Joni in long purple (?) dress - on a black background. The hardback is due to be published on 4th October. The price quoted on the jacket is 18.99 UK pounds. Quoting from the press release: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This definitive biography has been written and researched with the full co-operation of Joni Mitchell, who sanctioned first-hand interviews with many of those closest to her: friends, family, writers and collaborators, including former husband Larry Klein, long-time archivist and guitar technician Joel Berstein, and musicians Graham Nash and Tom Rush. Covering Mitchell's visual art as well as her music, the book includes fascinating previously unpublished correspondence between Mitchell and modernist painter Georgia O'Keefe. Broad in scope and full of detail, this is the remarkable story of the life and loves of an extraordinary and complex artist. Karen O'Brien is a music journalist and a BBC World Service radio news producer. She has written and broadcast widely on the arts. Karen's previous book, 'Hymn to Her', a collection of writings on women musicians was published by Virago in 1995. She is a New Zealander by birth and Londoner by choice." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wrote to Karen asking if it was possible to get an advance copy to Ashara for the Jonifest but she has just written back to say that "unfortunately, I don't think the book will be back from the printers by then. I'll get Virgin to send Ashara a press release and cover." PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 10:38:25 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: review from Seattle Times - Joni mention Here's a snippet from the Seattle Times' review of Rickie Lee Jones' concert: 'Now in her mid-40s, Jones still performs some of the jazz-and-pop-inflected songs of misfit youth that landed her on the charts - songs that had critics likening her to Jack Kerouac and Betty Carter; Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell (minus the latter's high-priestess pretensions).' This is the kind of remark that helped set me against Rickie Lee in the first place. The press can certainly add fuel to what may have been no more than little flare-ups of competitive jealousy or resentment. I don't see why this writer felt the need to add a little editorial swipe at Joni. It doesn't add anything to the review or reflect well on anybody. I noticed the following and thought I would add what little I know. Brian Jones died in the swimming pool of his house in Hartfield, a tiny village near where I live. The house had previously been owned by AA Milne and was hence the home of Christopher Robin which, no doubt, is the reason for the title of the book. "Who killed Cock Robin" is the title of a well known nursery rhyme but I can't really think of any link Joni could have made between Cock Robin and Christopher Robin the former being a bird and the latter a boy. The first time I played a Joni album was on a typical Scottish summer day, of course I was wearing a thick sweater and a look that reflected being AWOL from high school. At that time my folks were still proud owners of a six feet long cabinet with WOW! state of the art stereo speakers. Stereo! Ooosh! The first 7 inch I ever encountered was that belonging to Tom Jones. The Green Green Grass still seems as green as it was then in 19 sixty mid. Those were the days when when you wanted to record you had to put a live microphone up close to the speakers and demand the entire household be hushed for fear of a distant "Dr Who's coming on!" I digress. When I first heard Joni on a high school afternoon, well to be honest I can't be sure if it was C&S or THOSL, but I do remember thinking - oosh! Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock aside, both of which which I'd heard in the melee of groaning up in high school, (the first track, now was it Court and Spark or IFTKOMS?) sent shivers through me timbers and boy I've been shivered ever since. The reason I'm writing this is because I'm listening to C&S and it's reminding me of those daze. Man I wish I were still so impressionable! The first time ever I ... The shop has been responsible for bringing some unlikely tourists to Staten Island: Joni Mitchell, for one, who immortalized the shop in a song, and George Harrison, who popped in one day unannounced and went on a 40- minute shopping spree.
