" i long for our next embrace" is what's love all about. i hope some of you will share some of your tears over joni's songs with us. nuriel from israel (folks, this place is becoming the leading facist land in the western world. this crazy leader of us ariel sharon has decided to set this zone on fire and transfer all the plastiniens out to nowhere. we're heading towards a war - and the people of israel are so brain washed and racist that i'm ashamed to be a member of israel. no matter what you hear about the islamic bombs and attacks - you've got no idea what israelis are doing to them. they live like rats on the street. they got no money, no food, no water, nothing at all. "we" feel so "strong" cause "we" have the "israeli army" - that "we"'re not afraid of no one - and it's all sliding in one direction - a bloodbath that may never end. do you think that the israeli care? the hell they do. they're too busy trying to buy black market tickets to the red hot cheely peppers's show. would that group have appeared at south africa back then? i guess they would have. and i do'nt give a fuck about what dylan says to joni. this man is a member of one of the most racict cults in the "jewish world" and performs his "peace" songs on their bar-mitzva's. maybe he's too stoned to notice what's r e a l y going on). nuriel. _____________________________________________________________ Free email, web pages, news, entertainment, weather and MORE! I suppose I have to own up and say that I did not read/receive the original article which stared all of this. It's more the notion of 'common sense' I was interested in as I think it is a hugely loaded term politically. The great American writer C Wright Mills and the Italian writer Antonio Gramsci have a lot to say on the subject of 'common sense' and 'critical thinking' . I think you are dead right ..you do have to think through the term 'common sense', as it implies that there is common knowledge or that the state of things is obvious or 'natural' when often things could not be further from the truth. Seeing things for what they are involves a lot of work and thinking beyond what is presented as 'the natural state of things as they have always been. Love and Marriage are obvious examples. The romantic notion of marrying for love is an historically relative newcomwer. In many cultures today it is still not seen as a reason for marrying. They don't go together like a horse and carriage as the song would have us believe. But in western cultures, the romantic movement from the 16th century onwards in art, poetry, music, literature etc would have us believe it was the natural state of affairs. Marriage has historically been more about rights of property. Here are a couple of links.....see what you think and let me know http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-gram.htm (Only the first couple of concepts...I wouldn't read the entire article) http://www.infed.org/thinkers/wright_mills.htm Regards Gordon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 03:12:42 -0600 From: "shane mattison" Subject: joni and herbie photo a new joni photo for you joni photo collectors... at the bread and roses concert which i attended at berkeley, 1978... joni and herbie hancock: http://www.breadandroses.com/photo_exhibit_9.html like joni's private eye look maybe a rehearsal or somethin' joni in her famous beige raincoat shane http://www.angelfire.com/art/cactussong ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 09:04:15 From: "Raffaele Malanga" Subject: Joni and Brian Jones Hi all I received the email below from Brenda; perhaps you can help me find an answer to her question. (84-89). http://www.malanga.co.uk/diary/dod11.htm Do you know if this painting was done for or about Brian Jones?? Because there was a book written about Brian Jones called "Who Killed Christopher Robin?". I'm not a Joni Mitchell fan; don't know much about her. But I know she met Brian Jones at Monterey Pop Festival and wrote Tin Angel for him, so the painting might be about/ for him. Please let me know; I have my own Brian Jones website at: www.brianjones.zzn.com Appreciate it. Yes, the Exxon Valdez went down around late '87 or early '88 and the subsequent trial (and news coverage of it) was reaching full speed in the early 90s. My NRH songbook has a copyright of 1991 for the song. I can't pin down what Exxon Blue means exactly but here's another stab - the massive Valdez oil spill darkened the "blue" sea not only in actual color but also in destroying sea life. The natural sea was once true blue before it was mutated by man to Exxon Blue. > Kind of fits in with the image of a sickened planet that she presents later in 'Slouching Toward Bethlehem' where > she talks about the beast of the Apocalypse and hopes that the spirit of this world will 'heal and rise'. But isn't it the crux of Christianity that the sometimes barbarous true nature of man is overcome through the grace of God/Jesus and by following the teachings of love thy neighbor as thyself, doing good to others, being charitable, that we are a part of God and therefore higher than mere animals? >If you take apart the system of oppressor and oppressed - the whole pecking order of > have and have-not, the food chain of modern civilization - the world will surely grind to a halt and everything will crumble >into dust.... Kind of like 'Atlas Shrugged'. You may be right, Kakki! There may be some Ayn Rand in there! Maybe in a complicated way that, again, is difficult to quite figure out. Most people in the world are slaves in some way, whether it be to their jobs, their obligations, their government, their particular lot in life, etc. If they all decided to "shrug" it off tomorrow the world would indeed grind to a halt and devolve back to the primitive age. Galt's Gulch will always be an imaginary destination only. Joni has spoken often in interviews about how terrible the decade of the 80s was for her personally with the protracted lawsuits, medical issues, a dentist who "butchered" her, career problems and, from what I understand, the start of problems with Klein toward the end of the decade. Her sometimes apocalyptic (Slouching), biblical (Passion Play and Sire of Sorrow), bitter (Windfall and Nothing Can Be Done) and despairing (Last Chance Lost) writing all seems to have come right off that decade. She was beset by troubles on all sides and it seems somewhat evident that she must have turned to her faith in her darkest hours like so many do. Kakki, wondering about "slaves" again and how much leave time they got back in Jesus' day ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 07:41:30 -0400 From: "James L. Leonard" Subject: Re: Covers & Contributions, Vol. 20 Kudos to Mr. Muller (thanks for the copy, Bob) on this entry in the series. The Mingus Dynasty versions of Sweet Sucker Dance, Dry Cleaner and A Chair In The Sky put those compositions in far more a valuable light, Benny Goodman's cover of "Both Sides Now" has to be my personal favorite of any I've heard, Ian Shaw's jazz vocal take on "Furry Sings The Blues" is in the tradition of King Pleasure, Eddie Jefferson, and Jon Hendricks (and he's backed by the great Cedar Walton, no less) and Dave Douglas' workout on Same Situation and his imaginative arrangement of My Old Man, are collectively an overview of jazz at its finest. Guitarist Fareed Haque's cover of Woodstock is from an interesting album. About ten years ago, the recently re-launched Blue Note label asked a group of its most recent signings to each choose a Rock or Pop album to cover in its entirety. Haque chose Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's Deja Vu. It's an amazing album for lovers of both CSNY and jazz (like me). The arrangement of each of the songs on the album is in line with the spirit of the original, and it's a kick to listen to - like you're in a parallel universe. Another fine one in this Blue Note covers series was guitarist Charlie Hunter's Natty Dread (the Bob Marley & The Wailers album). Thanks for the fine listen, Bob. I really love the poetry in this song and the way that Joni sings it. She seems to use her voice yet again as another musical instrument. I've often thought about what she was trying to say in this song and your post made me think about it some more. I'll have a take on this. Could it be that Joni relates herself to this sometimes mythological figure, this mysterious Mary Magdalene? Western Christianity have often portrayed her as a prostitute, however there really isn't any indication in the Bible that she was that at all. Great Master Artists have often portrayed her clothed in Red and Jesus garbed in Blue holding a jar from which she has said to have anointed the feet of Jesus. Some have a theory that she was the beloved disciple that Peter was jealous of. Could it be that she's talking about male attitudes towards woman and their contributions to Christianity that began thousands of years ago. Just some thoughts. With that in mind, I pick up the Sunday paper on Friday so that I can be prepared. That said, now I can report on an article in this coming Sunday's Chronicle. The article is titled "Quintessential Cool" and it goes on about who is cool, who isn't cool, who was cool and lost it, and in the case of Bob Dylan who was cool, lost it, and then got some of it back. The best part is the "Cool Hall Of Fame" which is as follows: 1. Thelonious Monk: "There are no wrong notes" 2. Keith Richards: Did entire '81 tour without luggage 3. Johnny Cash: The Man in Black 4. Billie Holiday: The worse she felt, the better she sounded 5. Chet Baker: Adonis with a horn 6. Nat King Cole: Cooler than Sinatra 7. Joni Mitchell: Would rather be painting 8. Patti Smith: "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" 9. Joao Gilberto: Father of bossa nova 10. Tom Waits: Tin Pan Alley: real tin pans, real alleys For the rest you will have to get the Datebook or Pink section and then you too can be cool. Nuriel, Last time I cried over a Joni song would be maybe two years ago when a relationship that I had been in for 14 years finally died, was buried, and rotted in the ground. The song: All I Want, and the tears because there was never going to a way that the love that had once been there would ever bring out the best in the other person or in me too. I got choked up reading your words about what is happening in Israel now. I fear that what is coming is what I have been afraid of since Rabin was assassinated. Israel must exist and the cause of the Palestinians is right and in the light of the 1930s and 1940s the treatment of the Palestinians today is bitterly ironic. There is a message about nature and human existence there that is very painful and sad indeed. As South Africa has found a way despite all predictions to change without massive violence and bloodshed, may Israel and the Palestinians also find a way. I apologize that the chief executive of my country said this week that he would not be involved in a peace-seeking process at this time. This is the reason I used the word 'seem', Kakki when talking about survival being at odds with the teachings of Christ. I also did not mention the word Christianity which, as a religion, to me anyway, is not necessarily always one & the same with the teachings of Christ. Personally I think that humans as a species have a lot of evolving left to do if we ever expect to survive in the long run. The problems that are facing humanity and the planet we inhabit are far too difficult & complex to be solved by the simplistic survival of the fittest axiom. Until humans learn to value every single individual on the planet, the species doesn't stand a chance. We're all in this together and we all have something to contribute. After all, our brains have developed enough analytical thinking that we've been able to send humans to the moon. Surely we've progressed somewhat from the jungle mentality. Killing the earth & killing each other isn't going to accomplish the ultimate survival of the species. Compassion and caring for one another are the only sane ways to survive on this earth. Jesus knew that and for that I honor him. I think Joni would agree with me here. But deifying him was a mistake, I think. He was human. And as a human, we can aspire to follow the message he gave us and maybe rid ourselves of some of the useless guilt that other humans have tried to impose on it. Then we might just be able to do some good in this sad old world and the species maybe can continue to move forward. Enough of that.
