Just to let everyone know about my dislike for movie theaters, I found out some info from my mother today which had completely escaped my mind. I was only 5 at the time, but my parents had taken me to the movies. (I guess they couldn't find a baby sitter.) Anyway, half way through the movie, I started screaming at the top of my lungs. My Dad took me to the lobby and discovered that I had stuck a "red hots" piece of candy up my nose. The inside of my nose/brain was on fire. Dad managed to get me to blow my nose real hard to dislodge the damn piece of candy. My siblings still tease me about this embarrassing incident. Yes this *is* a true story, just as my first sexual experience was at age 6 with Marisa up in the mango tree. :~) Jimmy (taking truth serum this evening) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 07:16:23 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers, Volume 20 In a message dated 8/1/01 1:54:13 PM Eastern Daylight Time, SCJoniGuy@aol.com writes: > . My absolute favorite, and the cover I've been waiting for is Benny Goodman playing "Both Sides Now". I swear that man could have played ANY song and it would be great. My Dad loved Goodman so much, I think I remember listening to his music while breast feeding. Great sound, and Benny's clarinet is exquisite and swings! Unfortunately, a lot of great musicians have played BSN to little effect, but Goodman & band really nail it, I think. When I was in college at NC State I went to see Goodman in Greensboro, about an hour away. My friends couldn't believe I was going, but I just said "Are you kidding! It's BENNY-FREAKIN'-GOODMAN!!" Finally back from most of my summer running-around, and I'm now home and grounded. I can't believe we are T-minus 28 days until Jonifest!!! Wow! Where did the time go? It's not too late to climb on board the Express, but please let me know right away if you'd like to join us, as time is of the essence. Expect to hear a lot more about what's going on with Jonifest in the near future.....but for now, I have a question: I have made a possible deal with a friend of Sal's that does video-taping for a living. I have (I think) talked him into coming both Friday night and all day/evening on Saturday, and shooting at least 15 hours of video for Jonifest. He is willing to do this for free, and is willing to edit and make the following videos: 2 (2 hour) tapes of a Jonifest "Documentary" including candid shots, interviews, and snippets of performances. Separate tapes of full performances of each performer as well as group sing-a-longs (Maybe 4-5 full performances per video tape?) Probably a total of 4 or 5 tapes which you can pick and choose from. The deal is......he would charge a minimal amount of money, ($15 for 1-3 video tapes, $10 for 4 or more) so he can cover his costs of Master and regular video tapes as well as hopefully pay him a nominal amount for his shooting and editing time and gas to and from the venues. Frankly, I think this is a most unbelievably generous offer, but before I say yes to it, I really want to make sure enough tapes will be sold to at least cover his costs and a minimal amount for his time. Since I have done many video projects, I know the kind of time this involves, especially the editing. I would ask that people who want the video tapes actually purchase them directly as opposed to having another lister copy them. So.......I need to get a rough idea of who is interested in purchasing tapes, and roughly how many tapes you'd like. The "Documentary" will be a 2-tape package deal, (please count them as 2 tapes when you answer this) and the other tapes will be able to be purchased separately. You will NOT be held to this, I just want to get a rough estimate to see if it will be worth his while to do this. These tapes will be a wonderful memory for those that are attending, and a great way for those that were not able to make it to be part of the festivities. If you are interested in the tapes, please e-mail me privately with the number of video tapes you might be interested in purchasing as soon as possible, so I can let him know whether it is a "go." Thanks, everyone! Hugs, Ashara ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Aug 2001 13:13:28 -0500 From: "Sharon L. So there I was, driving along I-10 and listening to NRH like it was the first time I'd ever heard it. To let you understand, recently, Leslie (in London) and I have been e-swapping song ideas for the fest, well chords really, and NRH turns out to be pretty straight-forward in standard tuning. Anyhoo, chez nous (my sis's place), I had been strumming and strumming and my sister says, my that's a great song. Says I, Joni. Well turns out she can't get the song out of her head despite never having heard the original. For me, if you play (perform) a song long enough in your own way it kinda becomes a I-did-it-my-way song. Not having heard NRH in a long while my version, from memory, just became NRH if you will (I wish). To the chase, I got the car today and on the spur of the mo went and bought NRH & DJRD as a surprise; she's only heard the Hissing Demos version of Dreamland. I put the NRH CD on and man it just sent tingles up my car seat. I was close on running red lights through lack of concentration. I'm all for not listening to Joni that often coz when I rediscover her, whale-oil-beef-hooked by how good she is all over again. I'm picking sis up in a few hours and can't wait to play NRH in all the enclosed audio splendour that cars allow. Continuing to play the NRH album I was reminded of how, with such ease, Joni uses "big" words; edifying, incendiary, perjured. Not your run-o-the-mill be bop a lula poetry. The list hasn't had a Top 10 anything for a while. Top ten "big"/favourite words that Joni uses and is she being pretentious by using them, or IMO just the wonder that she is? Barry Better to be safe then sorry, especially since this sorry comes with a high price tag. Warning - 809 Area Code Trick Can Be Extremely Costly. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809. This one is being distributed all over the US. This is pretty scary --- especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this & pass it on to all your friends and family so they don't get scammed! MAJOR SCAM: Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" Phone Number. This is a very important issue of Scam Busters because it alerts you to a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly - can easily cost you $24,100 or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it. We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam to our attention. This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lot of money. There are lots of different permutations of this scam, but HERE'S HOW IT WORKS: You will receive a message on your answering machine or pager which asks you to call a number beginning with area code 809. The reason you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive information about a family member who has been ill, to tell you someone has been arrested, died, to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls. If you call from the US, you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute and get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24,000.00. WHY IT WORKS: The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (Bahamas). The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call" number, similar to 900 numbers in the US. Since 809 is not in the U.S., it is not covered by U.S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates involved when you call a "pay-per-call" number. There is also no requirement that the company provide a time period during which you may terminate the call without being charged. Further, whereas many U.S. phones have 900 number blocking to avoid these kinds of charges, 900 number blocking will not prevent calls to the 809 area code. We recommend that no matter how you get the message, if you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you don't recognize and/or investigate further and just disregard the message. Be wary of email or calls asking you to call an 809 area code number. It's important to prevent becoming a victim of this scam, since trying to fight the charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong. Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam. Things are about to get worse, because that infamous off-shore area code (809) is in the process of breaking up into smaller ones. Soon, you will have to think twice about calling any of the following area codes: 242, 246, 264, 268, 284, 345, 441, 473, 664, 758, 767 784, 787, 868, 869, 876 as well as 809. SOURCE OF THE MONEY My late father, SIR ETIENN DAVIDSON, a native of Mende District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone, was the General Manager of Sierra Leone Mining Cooperation (S.L.M.C) Freetown. According to my father. This money was the income accrued from overpayments and personal diamond business at the minning cooperation. Before the peak of the civil war between the rebels forces of Major Paul KOROMAH and the combined forces of ECOMOG peace keeping operation that almost destroyed my country, following the forceful removal from power of the Civilian Elected President Ahmed Tejan KABBAH by the rebels. My father had already made arrangement for his family, my mother, my little sister and myself to be evacuated to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire with our personal effects and the box containing the money through the aid of UNAMSIL evacuation team. My father deposited the box in a Private Safe Security Company for the safe custody until after the war when he will join us. During the war in my country, and following the indiscriminate looting of public and Government properties by the Rebel forces, the Sierra Leone Mining Cooperation was one of the targets looted and destroyed. My father including other top Government functionaries were ambushed and killed by the Rebels because of his relationship with the civilian Government of Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. As a result of my father's death, and with the news of my uncle's involvement in an air crash in January, dashed our hope of survival. The untimely deaths caused my mother's heart failure and other related complications of which she later died in the hospital after we must have spent a lot of money on her. Now my 16-year-old sister and myself are alone in this strange country suffering without any care or help. Without any relation, we are now refugees and orphans. Our only hope now is in you and the box deposited in the Safe Security Company. To this effect, I humbly solicit your assistance in the followings ways. - - To assist me claim this box from the Security Company as Beneficiary. - - To transfer this money in your name to your country. - - To make a good arrangement for a joint business investment on our behalf in your country and you, the caretaker. - - To secure a college for my little sister and my self in your country to further our education. - - And to make arrangement for our travel with you to your country after you have transferred this fund. Most importantly, the security company officials do not know the exact content of the box because it was declared as family valuables. The whole documents issued after deposit is in my custody.
