Some Toronto gossip: Joni was spotted having dinner at Il Posto, a trendy restaurant in the downtown Yorkville area some weeks ago. She was also spotted having drinks with Lou Adler. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2001 13:44:49 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Covers, Volume 20 Has it been another month already? Yes, it must be, because that goofball Bob has another covers CD ready to unleash on the world! So, without further ado, hubbub, or political rhetoric, here is Volume 20 in the burgeoning, wild, wacky world of Joni covers...it's subtitled "All That Jazz", but it could have been called "For the Lactose Intolerant", because there's nary a bit o' cheese to be found. This volume is dedicated to great jazz covers of Joni's stuff, and frankly I think the whole damn thing is sensational! Here's what's on it: 1. Mingus Dynasty - Sweet Sucker Dance 2. Mingus Dynasty - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 3. Mingus Dynasty - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 4. Mingus Dynasty - A Chair In The Sky 5. Fareed Haque - Woodstock 6. Marc Copland & Tim Hagans - Rainy Night House 7. Benny Goodman - Both Sides Now 8. The Joe Locke Quintet - Blue 9. Ian Shaw & Cedar Walton - Furry Sings The Blues 10. Jon Jang - All I Want 11. Dave Douglas - Same Situation 12. Dave Douglas - My Old Man I know what you're thinking..."Bob, you crazy bitch, you usually give us 18 or 19 tracks on a CD, now you're just putting out 12!! You're ripping me off, man!" Rest assured that's not the case...you know these jazzers, once they get wound up it's sometimes hard to get 'em to clam up 'til they've played for 8 or 9 minutes, but this one is also 74 minutes long and then some...some outstanding guitars, trumpets, saxes, keyboards, and others! And ALL of these tracks are excellent...I find that this disc just flows really well. There's lots more great Joni jazz on future volumes, but I thought I'd put together one special one, just for the hell of it! If you're interested in a copy of this or any other covers volume, lemme know and I'll hook you up. Euro's, Mr. van Tiel informs me that he is loaded and ready to burn, so contact him at john.van.tiel@wxs.nl and keep him busy so he doesn't spend all his time mooning and swooning! ;~) And yes, I'll be giving a copy away, so stay tuned for that... I don't remember it coming up on the list before, but while checking out the download section on Amazon.com, I found this song, "Joni Mitchell Tapes" by a group called SNFU, from their 1993 album "Something Green and Leafy This Way Comes." Have to admit that I had not heard of SNFU before, but in checking them out, I've learned that they are an Alternative/Punk band, and were influential upon such groups as NOFX and Green Day. By way of summary, it is the sad story of a poor soul who buys it while listening to Joni in his '67 Chevy. And of course he is buried in a cornfield with his Joni tapes. The song ends with this oh-so-true refrain: Can't separate a man and his Joni tapes Jo-ni Mitchell tapes Cant's separate a man and his Joni tapes Jo-ni Mitchell tapes Hey hey! Now how can you resist this? Its a Joni Punk Death anthem! Whips "Tell Laura I Love Her" with a stick! Must you have this for yourself? I have a collection of Jonatha tabs on my personal page in JMDL: http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/marian/guitar.htm I haven't added anything new in awhile but there's quite a bit there to choose from, including most of the LIVE songs and some from Steady Pull. I was able to stay focused for the first 2 hours and then my need for sleep took over. He played a little something from all of her albums including Two Grey Rooms, Paprika Plains ,and (good, kitty kitty.. )Taming the Tiger. I was amazed at the sound quality coming through my computer. He included covers of her songs; one by some members of the Supremes that I had not heard. He also played Bonnie Raitt's cover of Song about the Midway and Janet Jackson and Q-tip's "Joni Mitchell Never Lies " started the program out. He seemed to have a good bit of knowledge about her and took requests. There is a "John" in Montana ( Kudos to you) that made a slew of them. Great listening and wonderful to know that there are some cerebral DJ's that appreciate her genius. Thanks, John. If anybody heard the whole thing, please e-mail me with the remaining selections he chose to play between 2 and 3 AM. Thanks. I join the ranks of the July birthdays, as well, July 21, on the cusp of Cancer and Leo. Counting down to Toronto.
