Billy King writes: "I remember she was absolutely stunning that night - the best concert I've seen in my entire life (among many). Me and my girlfriend at the time were among the first people through the door, and we ran for the best seats we could get...which were 3rd row on the floor, slightly off-center. Joni was a bit somber at times (her pal Cass Elliot had been found dead in London only a few days before), and I remember she broke maybe three or four guitar strings in a row tuning up for "Help Me!" Joni was brilliant and the audience was adoring. I remember I caught a few of Joni's roses--tossed by the stagehands afterwards (in Louisville - home of the 'run for the roses'), which I kept for many years. It was a beautiful night I'll never forget." - ------------------------ Search the "Today" database: http://www.jmdl.com/today ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 03:14:53 EDT From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: Jonatha conversion Both Kakki and Marian told me to check out Jonatha Brooke Live which I hesitated to do because her most recent album "Steady Pull" did not grab me. Live, however, has been planted in my head and is growing like Jack's bean stalk. I can't wait to get in my car and listen to it. Jonatha is like Joni in that her chord structures are like the narratives of a good movie or novel -- they are sound but unpredictable. She's got a lot of sus chords and interesting dissonances not unlike Joni's music since they both use open tunings. Jonatha is really a very good guitarist, and she employs a good electrical guitarist to add some haunting embellishments like the Joan does, but largely, Jonatha strikes me as being an original. I have never liked live albums very much, but this one is very well recorded. I'm looking forward to seeing her on Conan later on. Marian, are tabs for Jonatha posted on the net? And is she using a pick or her fingers? Her percussive style is very distinctive. - - Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 20:20:55 +1200 From: "hell" Subject: Re: some news Anne wrote: > I've been putting off sending this email until I knew more. And like Alison, I think the lyrics are too cheesy - they make me cringe every time I hear the song. But I love Tiger Bones (it's my favourite on TTT) with Lead Balloon a close second! And like > Alison, I think the lyrics > are too cheesy - they make me cringe every time I > hear the song. The music is great, and her doing just the music at the end (Tiger Bones) is great. I find most of the lyrics are fine, good Joni stuff - but I agree about the refrain being kind of cheesy. The first time I heard it, it really stood out, in a negative sort of way esp. with whoever the guy is singing the in-between bit... ... and I'm taming the tiger (You can't tame the tiger) Nice Kitty, Kitty. If she could have done that a bit different, I'd like the song more - of course, being Joni, she probably has her reasons.
