Don't know if it could have been any better--the setting, watching the sun go down as ferries criss-crossed Elliot Bay, snow capped Mt. Rainier looming to the south, and the Olympics across the sound to the west. Or the food-- a fantastic array of seafood and and a luscious dessert, the memory of which has the power to send me into a Homer Simpson-like stupor ("Ummmm, raspberry . . . ") Better than all that, of course, was the company--we probably could have met at the Burger King down by the railroad tracks and still had the same warmth and talk, talk, talk, of Joni and otherwise. Mark and Scott have already commented on this, but driving home afterwards I was struck that even though our little group represented different places and ages and careers and occupations and life experiences, it is amazing how that common love of Joni's music generates such goodwill and connection. That is a real and rare gift to treasure. Great to get to know everyone better-- Phyliss and Bob Ward, fresh from their artistic adventures in BC, full of stories and good humor; Mark, whom I've long wanted to have a chat with, and who is as interesting and thoughtful and charming as his posts would lead you to believe; and Scott Price--warm and funny (and a little mischievous) and as always a pleasure to chat with. I must say my husband Tom and Bob Ward share the Good Sport Spouse and Cameramen award. I think they'd have had a pretty good time with or without us Joni people--there was a great deal of laughter from their end of the table. (Of the nicest sort, I'm sure. :-) Mark or Travis wrote: > 'I took a ferry to a higway then I drove to a pontoon plane/I took a > plane to a taxi and a taxi to a train.' > Believe it or not it took some effort for us to remember all the means > of transportation and their order in the lyrics of 'Black Crow' last > night. Props to Mark for being the first to get it right! It got a little dicey there, with the four of us wracking our memories, but Mark did us all proud. Allowed us to salvage our collective Joni lyric pride. Anyway--thanks to everyone for a fantastic evening. I'm up for another Seattle gathering--glad you'll be on board Jenaya! To other folks from the Emerald City and environs: Come out, come out, wherever you are! And if you get a chance to meet some joni friends, wherever on the planet you find yourself, for goodness sakes do it! Maybe it is just the sound of the electric piano ... who knows? :-) Esra herself still maintains this story. I got a personal email from her saying as much. FWIW she sounds like a credible nice person. Joni is credited as the sole writer. Other songs that Joni has not wholly written include most of the Mingus album, in which she wrote lyrics to Charles Mingus' music, including his signature tune "Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat". "Yvette In English" was co-written with David Crosby. "The Silky Veils of Ardor" used revised lyrics from a couple of old folk songs: "Wayfarin' Stranger" and "Come You Fair and Tender Ladies" (or something like that). "Slouching Toward Bethlehem" is based on a poem by W.B. Yeats."The Crazy Cries of Love" contains lyrics by Don Freed, and some of the Klein-era (Dog Eat Dog, CMIAR, NRH) songs were cowritten with her then-husband, bassist Larry Klein. She has performed other people's songs in concert, probably too numerous to mention, including "Get Together", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", & "Trouble Man". "Donna J. In order of their release: C&S was Joni's most mainstream album, at least in terms of airplay and popularity. It is "L.A. rock/jazz", backed by Tom Scott's "LA Express". It is one of her classics for good reason. WTRF has abundant electric guitar and drums, and great songs- more mainstream rock, no synths, unlike DED which is very synth/drum pattern heavy if you like that sort of thing. Hope this helps. Her view is more towards shapes, colors, and feelings rather than individual notes. She has developed over 50 different open tunings for guitar which she has used over the years. Basically when composing she will hear sounds in her head and then fiddle with the guitar strings until the open chord shapes sound right. I believe she then will make a numerical notation of a plus or minus, depending on how far she has relaxed or stretched the individual string from standard tuning (read: number of frets). For example if she took the bottom "E" string on a guitar and tuned it down to a "D" she would note "minus two" on that string, having taken the note down two half-steps from its origin. Once her open tuning is set she will experiment with combinations of barres to achieve the chord patterns she wants. I've not heard or seen her talk much about developing the melodies but I would guess she might kind of add them in as she's working on the progressions. I have heard that Joel Bernstein, Joni's long-time friend and guitar-tech-dude, has an extensive knowledge of all her tunings and if this is the case it wouldn't surprise me in the least if she has forgotten several of the tunings and would have to consult with Bernstein if she were to revisit some of her older material. Her piano songs are done totally from memory as once again she has no idea the chord names or the individual notes. I suspect her piano playing and composing comes from a zen-like state where she just lets it happen without conscious thought. In the studio Joni the producer would often hum or sing the parts she wanted other musicians to play and they tried to duplicate what she was presenting. The exceptions were Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter, two musicians whom she gave a much freer reign, because she felt they were much more in synch with what she was trying to accomplish than the usual pro session players. With Shorter, in particular, Joni would describe a setting, like, say, a dark stormy night, and then let Shorter just go from there. Joni knows, and has been told countless times, that her music is often complex, her chords "peculiar." That she possesses some kind of genius is widely accepted (especially here on the JMDL :-) but it's achieved with a keen ear, attention to details, and an abstract sense of painting with her music, not by slaving over a piano or a guitar and writing down each note as they fall into place. JMDLR's--can you offer any clues? Hi Ken, With many apologies to old-timers (yes I know this is the *third* time I have posted the following) but this long-ish yarn will give you a good picture of how "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey" came to pass..... This is from an interview Joni gave to "Musician" in 1983 and takes a while but will eventually work back to "The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joni Mitchell: "There's a song called "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey." It was a live duet between Don Alias and myself; it's a strange piece of music, in that it's an example of a song that has a structure that I had completely ignored. I dropped beats, I added beats, there's bars of 3/4 that are in there, and there's all kinds of abbreviated signatures. Don was thrown into a highly alert position as a drummer, to be able to follow this thing, which was not maintaining a groove, just bursts of rhythmic passages. It was very spontaneous. And, when the thing was over, we figured that magic had, in fact, occurred. As raw as it was, and as technically peculiar as it was, you couldn't beat it for spirit. And I turned to Henry and said, "You know what we need on this now? We need wolves and water gongs." And, that was on a Wednesday night. So he was going to make it a project over the weekend to look through the A&M library of sound effects, and we were going to get some wolves." "So, anyway, that weekend I had company coming from Texas, and I had company coming from Canada at the same time. And simultaneously I was supposed to be at the Bread & Roses Festival. When my guests arrived, coming already from long distances, I had to tell them, "We're moving now!" And we all went to this festival in San Francisco. Things kinda got screwed up and there were some vibes around the whole situation which I won't go into, that made me very introspective. And I noticed at dinner that night, that my introspection was also making the table introspective. So, I thought, "I don't want to be here in this mood with these people, I'm influencing their mood," and so I excused myself. I had told a friend of mine, Tim Hardin, that I was gonna meet him back at the hotel. So I get to the hotel desk, and I say to a very uptight desk clerk, you know, "Would you please give me Mr. Hardin's room?" And he replied, "Can't you see I'm busy?" He was really uptight. The lobby of the hotel was gigantic, and suddenly, across the hall there came a drunk, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?," stumbling across the lobby, snapping his fingers, right? I had nothing but time on my hands, so I perked up, because suddenly there was externally something interesting (laughs), and I was drawn across the hall, and I linked up with him, and we came back across the hall, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" We ended up standing by the desk, with this uptight guy in the background, and the next thing I knew, we had drawn in two more singers who turned out to be the Persuasions. Well, when we stopped singing, everybody was in great spirits, we all laughed, you know, we patted each other on the back, and we shook hands. "So now," I say to the guy, "Would you give me Mr. Hardin's room," and somebody in the crowd yells, "Oh, Hardin's in the bar." So I go into the bar, there's a kind of loungey jazz band playing, and Hardin is pissed out of his mind, and he comes dancing towards me through this crowded room here, singing to the band, "Hello, Joni," and doing improvisational lyrics. So I start dancing towards him, singing "Hello, Timmy! So good to see you!" The bartender says, "What would you like?" And I sing to him, "One white wine," and the bartender raises his hand in the air, and sings back, "One white wine." And the next thing, the whole room was engaged in this spontaneous Broadway show. Anyway, the story hasn't come to an end yet. Now, we're all in very high spirits. We discover that there's a party on the third floor. We go up to this room, and all the way up the hallwayyou know, Timmy and I are hamming it up, just being goofy. We get into the room, and suddenly, the same guy that was drunk in the lobby singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" comes up to me and says, "I have a tape of some wolves." And I say to him, not even realizing how profound it is, "Oh, I'm looking for a tape of some wolves. I'll write down my address and you send it to me." He said, "No, I mean, I've got it on me." So I said, "Okay," and he produced this box of tapes, all homemade with labels on them, and we thumbed through it. It was all African animal sound effects. Well, the very last entry was wolves. So he loaned me his tape recorder, I put the tape on, and it was a cycle of a wolf-it starts off with the lead wolf, and then you hear yipping of pups and female voices, you know? And then he goes, "Aaaooo-aaooh-abh." Like, the same yelp, but one note up higher in the scale. And then the yipping of the pups, and the females. And the thing was looped about four times. Well, the first time I did "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey," I just hit the button right at the beginning, picked up the guitar, and uncannily, it was the perfect key. The way the loop was designed, if you started it at the top of the tape and went all the way to the end, it fit the structure perfectly. So anyway, the next night when I went to the concert, my friend Joel Bernstein hooked the tape up and for an encore, I came out and we did this song and we blasted the wolves, mixed them in with the song, and the audience when I was finished singing, some clapped, but most of them howled me back on for another encore. So you see, there's still ways to get spontaneity into a show." - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 16:07:46 -0700 From: Steve Dulson Subject: Fred Neil Randy Remote wrote: >She has performed other people's songs in concert, probably >too numerous to mention, including "Get Together", "I Heard It >Through the Grapevine", & "Trouble Man". I just did check out that site. Like you, I am confused as to whether or not it's intended to be a hoax or not. Even it if is meant to be a joke, it is in extremely poor taste and there are lots of fools out there who might actually go ahead and do this. I'm grossed out and upset at this kind of cruelty to animals (even if it is "faked" cruelty.) I've sent an e-mail off to the webmaster (who is the webmeowster, btw, leading me to believe it really is meant to be a joke, but you never know) telling him/her how *not* impressed I am. I took the liberty of copying your organisation, Bill (but the general e-mail address, not your personal one!) I see my kids (my son in particular) going onto different websites to play games, some of which are, IMO, in extremely poor taste, to say the least. These often consist of spoofs (but not very good ones) of real celebrities or TV characters - e.g. one with a group sounding like the Backstreet Boys singing "Which Backstreet Boy's gay" to the tune of "I want it that way" (or whatever that song is called); gross/ childish/ bathroom humour takeoffs on kids' TV shows such as Teletubbies and so on. Believe me, I do not hesitate to tell my kids that I don't think these sites are funny and the reason why I believe this. I don't want my kids growing up to be cynical. I know there are times in a child's life when they seek to grow out of childish things and, when they do so, they often blatantly reject things they loved as a toddler and so on. Maybe that's all part of the growing-up process, but I think it's very sad that kids feel they have to "prove" how mature they are by turning on the very things they loved as a child; and, unfortunately, this sort of thing seems to be quite rampant these days. The bonsai kitten website has that kind of effect on me. I love a good piece of satire, but this kind of thing (taking something that may not be your choice in music or TV or whatever and making something gross or cruel out of it - appealing to the lowest common denominator, in other words) is not satire and it's not humourous. It's just mean and completely without wit. Now stepping back off my soapbox to say I loved the wolf-howls story, even though I have heard it before (a good story bears repeating). But, is "the wolf" based on a real person? A serial killer, I presume? Does anyone know if it's based on anyone in particular (asks the same person who often complains that too much talk about *who* a song is about may be an invasion of privacy - so call me a hypocrite.) I was at the July 9, 1983 Columbus concert. My brightest memory of that show was the closing number, Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody. Joni very emotively lengthened "Are you still miiiiiiiiiiinnnnne?" and the crowd went nuts. After the show we drove by the theater and I stuck my head out the window and yelled "Jooonnnniiiiiiiiiiii...." I just had to. Of course my ears perked up and I saw him laughing and tearing a page out of the LA Weekly. He muttered the quote but I couldn't hear him and then they were laughing at some other quotes. The current issue is an oversized issue packed through with articles on the "war on drugs." So I picked one up and found they interspersed many large quotes on drugs by famous musicians throughout the paper. Joni's is not too pithy - "There are entire albums that would have been very different if that drug [cocaine] didn't exist." Some funnier ones were Frank Zappa's "Speed will turn you into your parents" and Ted Nugent's "All you stoned idiots are not getting into my guitar playing." Lucy's is a great place and she was known to have fed many starving musicians in the who later made it big. It was mainly a hangout for Webb, the Eagles, Jackson Browne and Linda in the old days and their tributes to her line the walls. Great old fashioned Mexican food, too.
