If anyone could steer me in the direction of finding more articles/photos from that period, let me know.........I've checked the JMDL base already...... thanks PHIL ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 12:38:35 -0700 From: Scott Price Subject: Friends of Spirit The Seattle chapter of the JMDL met last evening for a wonderful extended dinner and renewed old friendships and started others. Collectively the group adopted Joni's "Black Crow" as their theme since we arrived by planes to taxis to ferries and landed at the upscale Cutter's Bayside with its panoramic view of the waterfront and mountains beyond. After four years I finally met my Northwest brother Mark, in Seattle, our event coordinator. His choice of a meeting place was impeccable and his company a treat. Catherine Turley and husband Tom took a rare evening's respite from parenthood to join the group, which got its impetus from the Pacific Northwest travels of SoCal'ers Phyliss and Bob Ward. Although Mark and I are still debating which one of us will be Emmylou's next husband, we did manage to feel that special bond that JMDLers have. Phyliss and Catherine echoed this sentiment...you know the one...when after years of buying the albums, listening to them over and over and over in solitude, and more years spent in amazement wondering how Joni's music connects so deeply with your soul, you find there are others out there who feel the same. I think it's a great tribute to the artist that her admirers will go to such lengths to gather where they can share and strengthen the bond that brought them together...the love of Joni, her art, her music, her inspiration. Mark, let's not wait another four years to share some conversation. Catherine, one of my special list friends, it was great to see you again. And Phyliss, you and Bob have a great thing going...I wish you much success and happiness. Thank you all for spending the time. You provided a night which will be a treasured memory. I'm sorry to hear I missed a Seattle get-together last night - I live a block from Cutter's! Anyway, I've had "You Turn Me On..." stuck in my head for a week, and it has me thinking of other songs about radio. I'm putting together a thematic CD and I was wondering what y'all would suggest. Here's what I have so far: "YTMOIAR" - Joni "Are You Out There?" - Dar Williams "Radio Song" - REM "Video Killed The Radio Star" - The Buggles "Mexican Radio" - Wall of Voodoo "Screenwriters Blues" - Soul Coughing What else can you guys think of? I know there's tons, this could turn into a 2 CD project... Best to ALL! 'I took a ferry to a higway then I drove to a pontoon plane/I took a plane to a taxi and a taxi to a train.' Believe it or not it took some effort for us to remember all the means of transportation and their order in the lyrics of 'Black Crow' last night. Must have been the excitement and pleasure we all were feeling in each other's company. I think we finally managed to remember everything in the proper order. Not much to add to Scott's description of last night's mini-gathering. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner and the company was certainly first rate. Phyliss & Bob Ward are both warm and generous people. It was a pleasure to be able to sit down and get to know Phyliss a little better. And I really enjoyed Bob's sense of humor and open manner as well. Catherine Turley showed up with a bag full of live recordings by the likes of Jonatha Brook, Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams that she generously distributed to Phyliss, Scott and myself. Thank you so much, Catherine! I'm looking forward to some great listening. It was a delight to meet you and Tom again. We have to get together again soon! These are first rate human beings, people! > > After four years I finally met my Northwest brother Mark, in Seattle, our > event coordinator. Thanks for making the effort to come down from Port Angeles, Scott. I hope you didn't have to wait too long for your ferry last night and that it wasn't too terribly late by the time you got home. Scott seems to radiate warmth & congeniality. He would be a welcome addition to any gathering & I thank him for making the trip to join our group last night. > Although Mark and I are still debating which one of us will be Emmylou's > next husband, we did manage to feel that special bond that JMDLers have. > Phyliss and Catherine echoed this sentiment...you know the one...when after > years of buying the albums, listening to them over and over and over in > solitude, and more years spent in amazement wondering how Joni's music > connects so deeply with your soul, you find there are others out there who > feel the same. Thank you, Catherine, for all the great music. And thank you all for your wonderful company last night! The next time I hope we can get some more Seattle area listers together. (Good to see you back, Jenaya!) Mark in Seattle PS: Don't worry, Colin. I'm beginning to think Emmylou is far too much of a free spirit to settle on either one of us. So the likelihood of my defecting is very slight! Besides, after Scott told me about her fondling his thigh, I began to have my doubts about her. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2001 18:07:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Julian Parker-Burns Subject: Hello Again! (...Ok, Where do I Begin) Hello Again! This is now, I guess, my third incarnation on this list in the past couple of years...Amherst, Massachusetts, Washington, DC and now Taipei, Taiwan. Thanks to the great computer scene here I now have a great scanner and a CD burner...so if there is anyone in Asia who might need anything from almost any of the Joni (and the "Frier" Bob's cover CDs volumes 1-8) tape trees I would be happy...more than happy to get you what you need...just let me know. Here in Taiwan I am finding myself in an almost complete void of hip music. The majority of what I hear sounds like Chinese Air Supply (no offense to the Cetera fans). Even the local Tower Records is sorely lacking in some of my strange tastes (all must hail Neutral Milk Hotel,Andrew Bird, 1920s Hawaiian jazz, Steven Malkmus, and Cat Power...all of which I can't find anywhere here yet get me through my day...besides of course Joni et al). I have continued my random acts of Joniness crusade by finding curious Taiwanese folks who have either never heard of Ms. Mitchell (and love the Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Loreena McKinnet etc etc) or perhaps have heard but have no idea...by sneaking them a personal compilation CD or two. A while back my mother requested some Joni. She had bought the "Hits" CD so as to remind herself of me and my passions so I went about putting together my own "hits" CD...only to find that it actually took two CDs to do it. Here is the track lists: The first CD is called "Banquet"... Banquet, The Hunter (Good Samaritan), Cactus Tree, Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire, The Pirate of Pennance, Don't Interupt the Sorrow, For Free, I Think I Understand, Sunny Sunday, The Fiddle & the Drum, The Arrangement, The Jungle Line, The Priest, The Wolf that Lives In Lindsey, I Still Miss Someone (with Johnny Cash), Long Black Veil ( with J.C.), Girl from the North (w/ JC), Mr. Tamborine Man (w/ Pete Seeger), and Both Sides Now (w/ Pete Seeger + the extra verse). The second CD is called "Silky Veils"... Silky Veils of Ardor, All I Want, Passion Play, Blond in the Bleachers, Conversation, Fro the Roses, Smokin' (Try Another), Hejira (from the Gene Autrey Museum gig), court and Spark, Just Like This Train, Night in the City, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Night Ride Home, Songs to Aging Children Come, Turbulent Indigo, Brandy Eyes, Carnival in Kenora, Winterlady, and Just Like Me. For those of you who are intimate with these songs you may be able to hear the sequencing flow in your heads. Well, as you can see, I'm still committed to the cause and am looking forward to getting caught up on the news and any recordings I may have missed since the Merryweather show in MD. Again, any folks out here in Asia who need a "hook-up" just let me know. Take care, Julian Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I will buy an album next tuesday, in the store they have a double album called dog eat dog and wild things run fast, and court and spark. Wich one should i buy? I have been listening to Hejira and it is an amazing album. It's incredible the way she can describe situations and places. My favourite songs are Amelia, a strange boy, refuge of the roads, hejira and Furry sings the blues.I love the paragraph when she sings - He points a bony finger at you and says i don't like you.Everybody laughs as if it is the old mans standard joke but it is true, we are only welcome for our drink and smoke. I love that sentence. I am quite happy today, our sub-20 soccer selection won the world cup. In Argentina we are in a terrible recesion since 1998 and we don't have usually good news. Olthought it won't change our economical situation,at least it is a good new. To forget the problems for a moment.
