What other movies has Joni's music appeared in? I remember someone telling me "Twisted" is in a Woody Allen movie, but I don't know which one. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 08:20:17 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: A burning question!! JC << However, there is NO info on the cover and it was sealed so I couldn't get into it. >> There's no information on the inside either, Russ, but as head of the FBI here's what I've been able to uncover: 1. BYT - Vera Haime 2. This Flight Tonight - E-Clypse 3. BSN - Treasure 4. You Turn Me On...-Vera Haime 5. Woodstock - Retail Snail 6. Chinese Cafe - David Hay 7. Carey - Vera Haime 8. Help Me - English Girls 9. Chelsea Morning - Ralph Martin Willey 10. River - Jennifer Hollywood The CD was put out by Dressed to Kill records, an outfit who specializes in "tribute" CD's, much like K-Tel put out Top 40 hits collections. Dressed to Kill's strategy appears to be to get performers that no one has heard of and do extremely uncreative knock-offs, add minimal packaging and call it a tribute. That way they can sell it for cheap. I of course had to get it as I am the ultimate Joni covers whore! As a whole, this CD rates about a D+. I DO appreciate the fact that there's a cover of "Chinese Cafe" on it besides the predictable ones. And the "Chelsea Morning" arrangement is interresting, I don't know if it's intentionally creative, or if Mr. Willey can't hit the notes (CM DOES get UP THERE you know...). Anyway, in MY opinion you'd do MUCH better to buy some blanks and snag some copies of our "Covers" collection. Of course, I am biased as hell! ;~) Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 08:26:12 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers 19 **FREEBIE ALERT** Cindy guessed: << "The Dawntreader" - STAS? please please please please please please >> Cindy, how can I refuse a girl that says "please" 6 times? (Even though many girls refused ME no matter how many times I said "please"! ;~D) It is my pleasure to announce that you are the winner and soon-to-be proud owner of "Covers" Volume 19! Your guess was the closest one to my pick of: That Song About the Midway - Clouds If you didn't win, but still want #19, lemme know. And stay tuned, another month means another Covers CD! ;~) Bob NP: America, "Clarice" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 08:37:04 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: I am new << she has lots of great albums. That's why i am here. >> Walter, a big welcome to you! You say that your English is not good, yet you have created one of the most profound statements I've ever read (above). We all feel the same! I'm also a Joni fan, and love the Smashing Pumpkins too. Hard to touch Melon Collie, Gish, Siamese Dream, & Adore was one one the prettiest records of the 90's! As for Joni's pop records, I too would cast a vote for Court & Spark, as well as Wild Things Run Fast & Night Ride Home. Interestingly enough, these 3 collections come from three different decades but are all extremely accessible melodically & of course Joni's "words" are always on display, though these will not offer the depth of Hejira in terms of lyrics. Please continue to share your thoughts with us as you discover Joni's wonderful music. It may turn out that the Pumpkin's breakup will be the best thing that ever happened to you! Then there are covers that show up in movies like Circle Game in "The Strawberry Statement" & Songs to Aging Children Come in Alice's Restaurant. I don't think either JM.com or jmdl.com has a complete listing...maybe you should take the project on! :~) Bob NP: Kevin Gilbert, "Goodness Gracious" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 10:40:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Susan Guzzi Subject: Bundle of Threads Very Long (SJC) Well as per usual I have saved up all of my thoughts for one post chock full of my opinions and thoughts. First of all I am now "jonesing" for Harold & Maude. And soon after I am done here I will pluck it from the cabinet and jam it into my VCR. I think that for me, the reason I love this film so much is it speaks to anyone who is not within the "social norm" (whatever that is), and reaffirms our freedom to love whoever we are catapulted to love. Because I don't believe truly falling in love has anything to do about choice. Further more H&M is funny - hysterical, what about that mother!? There is as mentioned the great music, before "Cat" lost his mind. Please no replies to defend his extremest Muslim beliefs. I am a woman and queer so it will all fall on deaf ears. Next I tried to tackle the 2 song per album exercise - - I got this far: STATS - Night In the City & Cactus Tree LOTC - Conversation & The Arrangement I still believe some of her earliest work contains the jazz root or maybe folk or her minstrel edge is just a natural stepping stone to jazz. Blue - All I Want & Last Time I Saw Richard (perhaps choosing the first and last songs on the album is my way of saying the entire album - which is my fave). FTR - Cold Blue Steel & Barangrill(tougher than Blue, Barangrill my surprise choice for today for the jazzy professor). C&S - Peoples Parties & Trouble Child(no need to worry about the jazz influence anymore, it is everywhere here). That's about as far as I got when after observing all of the wonderful choices you all made I realized with rare exception I couldn't disagree with any choices made. Many of the choices you all made were the same as mine or may be by tomorrow. As to the feelings being shared here about gay bashing and acceptance and Pride in Chicago I have just a it to add. First of all a little over 10 years ago as I left a bar a drunken man who had demanded his way in and proceeded to pursue woman in the bar who were intoxicated, followed them out into the street. Where I as a younger woman tried to create friendly interference between him and a woman who was out of her mind drunk. He who wanted a gay woman, proceeded to call me dirty gay names and and move me out of his way. Well I delayed him enough till she was out of sight and then I enjoyed the knuckle sandwich he served me up - or sucker punch! I am no dainty little lady, but I went down seeing stars - literally. I won't go into the details about the police here & now. But that man is still out there and millions like him, including women. Through education we are making strides, but I would never say that MOST people are tolerant of my lifestyle. I would say in the past 20 years we have come a long way, but I don't think Matthew Sheppards mother would see it that way. Furthermore I bet my own bigoted mother would not. Finally, on a lighter note, Kerry never write again that you were in Chicago at the Pride Parade without getting in touch with me. For that matter any of you out there! I was sitting, observing people quietly from my seat in the Closet (a bar), while you may have been right outside the door or perhaps ordering a drink right next to me. Geez I hope I was behaving! Sorry this was so long and I promise not to save so much up again for one post. Peace Susan Guzzi Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! The music was great (even though I never was a big Cat Stevens fan) and Bud Cort's fake suicides were hilarious. But no one has yet mentioned one of the main reasons, for me anyway, that this movie was so wonderful. Harold & Maude would never have been half as good without the delightful Ruth Gordon as the irrepressible Maude. Gordon's impish irreverence and obvious love of life sparks this movie and makes it work. She makes me see why Harold would be attracted to Maude and that makes the whole premise of the movie believable. She was one of a kind! My reactions are so much the same as Mark's. I was fascinated by Cort and by turns scared, horrified and and giggling uncontrollably at his suicide schemes, but Ruth Gordon was a complete revelation and just blew me away. She immediately became the the ageless spirit of a very young woman and made the love story totally believable. She really was a treasure. It is one of those rare performances one will never forget. I really loved the Cat Stevens music - some of those songs I haven't listened to in 30 yearsand it really took me back. Afterward, like Vince and Les, I did some internet searches on Cort's movies and am ready to hit the video store for more! I also learned he lives nearby and is involved in local community theater productions. I will definitely be checking for future performances. Mark - please give my best to everyone at your get-together tonight! I wish I could be there. ANother one of my closest friends just moved to Seattle so I may have to apply for an "associate" membership with the PNW jmdler chapter at this point! ;-) Kakki Mark wrote: > The music was great (even though I never was a big Cat Stevens fan) and Bud > Cort's fake suicides were hilarious.
