Curve balls in the deep end? That is confusing, since a reference to "deep end" was in the previous paragraph. Makes sense only if you read more of the review, which I've copied below. Sounds like the only song the reviewer was moved by was Diana's version of ACOY. No wonder. It's a great song, no matter who does it. And to Bob, new FBI head: > Congrats on the new fed job, too. :) I second that. Anything you want to tell us about now? Any J. Edgar Hoover-ish pink feather boas in your closet maybe? We won't tell anyone... not even the Enquirer reporter with LOTS of cash... Debra Shea NP: Carly Simon's "Like a River" from Letters Never Sent. Whoa, it suddenly has me in tears. Didn't expect that. From Neil Strauss's review in NYTimes: Her stage presence undramatic, understated, almost cautious was not unlike her technique. Her attitude recalled tales of a young Mabel Mercer, whose stiff shyness contributed to rather than detracted from her empathy for and understanding of the material. She sang with grace, poise and respect clearly punctuating each word and note rather than singing with rabidity, showiness and competition. More confident as a precise, preternatural pianist, Ms. Krall always erred on the side of caution as she sang, tending to interpret in a breathy whisper and occasionally a more dramatic rasp. Sometimes the effect was something like that of stepping into a wading pool warmed by the sun: it's a safe, comfortable body of water, an easy place to relax and drift off without worrying about drowning, but it lacks a deep end. In a step away from the intimacy and subtlety of past jazz festival performances, Ms. Krall was backed by an orchestra (in addition to her quartet). Though this enabled her to conjure up some of the studio perfection of her Grammy-winning album "When I Look in Your Eyes," the chemistry between her and the orchestra was often lacking. Her 16-song set included tunes made famous by Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and Julie London, though she also threw in some of her favorite curve balls, most impressively a moving version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" that did find a deep end. She also offered a sneak preview of her long-awaited next record, "The Look of Love," singing a purposefully unseductive version of the title song and a stirring "Love Letters." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Jul 2001 17:03:31 -0500 From: "Sybil Skelton" Subject: Joni mention in Dallas In the Dallas Morning News arts section once a week there is a feature "what's in the changer". The paper's music critic and some "guest" critics tell what they're currently listening to and why. The "guests" are usually local artists or visiting artists with something to sell. This is from yesterday's guest critic: Joni Mitchell Joni Mitchell, a.k.a. Song to a Seagull (Warner Bros., 1968) "There's a song by Joni Mitchell called "Night in the City" on Song to a Seagull. That song excites me. The whole album's great. I just have the vinyl of it. That's the record that's been most exciting lately." - --Austin singer-songwriter Davmd Garza, whose new album, Overdub, is scheduled to hit stores on Tuesday. I caught on to this reviewer's meaning right away. Diana Krall has a very soothing, sexy voice. I like 'When I Look Into Your Eyes' but find it kind of lightweight, mostly in her choice of material. Nothing really wrong with that, but when I watched her do ACOY at the TNT tribute, I thought 'Ah, she *is* capable of doing justice to deeper material.' She also offered a sneak preview of her long-awaited next > record, "The Look of Love," singing a purposefully unseductive version of the > title song and a stirring "Love Letters." I'm a fairly recent convert to the soulful voice of Dusty Springfield. Nobody sings 'The Look of Love' quite like Dusty did. She made that song so intimate and seductive that you'd have to be made of stone not to get a little tingle in your spine from hearing her sing it. I think Diana could do a great job with it but I'm a bit puzzled by the 'purposefully unseductive' reference. Seems to me that kind of treatment would kill this song which I consider to be one of Bacharach/David's best. I am a 17 years old boy from Argentina who just bought hejira last week. The email adress is of my mother. My name is Walter Hilgemberg. I've been for three years a hardcore fan of the smashing pumpkins. After the split up of the smashing pumpkins i tryed to listen new music (for me). Last week i was in my sister's house becouse she has a copy of atchung baby, that i had for three years and i wanted to listen it, but the copy was on his boyfriend house. So , i didn't want to leave with my hand empty, so i took hejira and i ve been listening to it for a week constantly. I love the album and i am going to buy blue and court and spark in the next weeks. Olthought money is not easy to get in this part of the world i will make an effort. I know that those three albums are classics becouse of a reserach that i made in the rollingston.com page. But it seems that she has lots of great albums. That's why i am here. And i want to ask wich of her albums are pop/rock albums, becouse hejira is like a mix between rock and jaz, and also i want to listen to her pop stuff. well that is all bye and looking forward to your answer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 22:29:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: I am new - --- Ana Trabadelo wrote: > Hi, > Fist, i want all of you to excuse cuz my english > isn't very good. > I am a 17 years old boy from Argentina who just > bought hejira last week. The > email adress is of my mother. It's nice to see young people with good taste joining the list. If you like the more "pop" sound, I would recommend either "Court and spark" or "Miles of Aisles". Then again, if you like 80s-style rock, synth-music and so on, you may want to try "Dog Eat Dog" - it depends on your taste. A lot of people hate "Dog eat Dog", but I quite like it. JC Gang, Long time no post. Hope you're all well. At Amoeba Records on Haight St. in SF, there is a CD called "Tribute to Joni Mitchell: I came upon a child of God" There's a naked dude (oh, yeah!) on the cover sitting in some Parrish type foliage. There are 10 songs (the usual suspects). However, there is NO info on the cover and it was sealed so I couldn't get into it. ....it's $7.95. I just couldn't buy it without knowing! I realize this has probably been digested by yawl last year. The copyright is 2000. Please advise. Current Joni listening trend. DJRD (as always) FTR (it is wonderful after so many years to REALLY get into to it and HEAR it. Like a new release) Mingus (go figure) NRH (need I say anything) and TI (I am genuflecting..I hope you are, too.)
