What an interesting challenge! It's been especially enjoyable revisiting Joni's early cds. So far, this is what I've come up with, keeping in mind these things (and assumptions): highly articulate linguistics prof (lyrics will be heard); jazz lover (unusual unexpected sounds will be appreciated); choosing songs representative not only of each cd, as you requested, but also ones containing Joni's basic themes; how each song's ending flows into the beginning of the next; and even though it's Joni, who is never boring, having enough variety so it's all interesting. STAS: Night in the City - simple sounding folkie beginning, which quickly gets into a surprising and very pleasing groove, with quirky piano in the background; Joni expressing her joy of life; seems like a good idea to start off the tape with such positive energy as a good balance for the more melancholy songs that are sure to follow Cactus Tree - very wordy character study and expresses Joni's career-long concern with commitment/love versus freedom/emptiness; I like the guitar playing and her singing on this song, it sounds so pure; I especially like the sadness in her voice at the end CLOUDS: Roses Blue - because it sounds so intense (compared to Cactus Tree), and has some odd jangly instrument in the background, plus an ending that's unusual and not nearly as annoying as some of the ones from this period Tin Angel - earnest Joni; very simple and sincerely sung; poetic lyrics and, again, a dramatic ending, this time with guitar instead of voice LOTC: Conversation - nice relief after the heaviness of Tin Angel; Joni tells a good story in this one too; love and freedom, basic Joni concerns; and a snappy ending complete with di-di-das and sax For Free - ahhh, piano... great snapshot story, and a jazzy ending BLUE: Carey - it's the least jarring song to follow For Free (the sound of this cd is so different from LOTC), and again Joni is being her life-loving self River - gotta get serious sometime; this one's classic Joni FTR: Judgement of the Moon and Stars - positive energy, which is typical Joni -- even when melancholy she still has hope; contrasts with the sadness of River; complex lyrics; surprising sounds Let the Wind Carry Me - still the piano, now telling a personal story; and lots of interesting sounds OR Electricity - different overall sound compared to Judgement (too different to follow?), and the lyrics are especially clever and imaginative Uh, oh, I can't decide on this last pair so it's time to give it a rest. I'm Jonied out for the moment, and there is the have-to-be-someplace-at-8-am thing so... to be continued... Debra Shea NP: Electricity, cool song P.S. I'd put the songs from the live albums at the very end of the second tape, and maybe have as the final song Joni's performance of BSN from the tribute concert. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 07:21:03 EDT From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni Twofers I wrote " I left off Circle Game. Which song is going to be more interesting to him musically? The Circle Game is a great song, but I'd suggest The Priest is more apropos for the MIT prof." No doubt, but as the old line goes, "Never mind what he wants, send him a birthday card" ;-) The real fun begins when you repeat the exercise, leaving off your original choices. Sort of like hits and misses, extended. The MIT prof gets The Priest on that one. The incredible thing about her is how great the second collection will be, regardless of your choices the first time around. Bob S ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 08:35:42 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: MINGUS....A must own album? <> Well, *I* would say that EVERY Joni is a 'must own', Hits & Misses excluded... Mingus has its flaws, but it definitely rewards repeated listenings...I still contend that "Sweet Sucker Dance" offers her finest singing relative to the challenge of the melody. All those "blue" notes, it rarely goes where you would naturally want it to resolve to, and she nails it in an amazing way! All of the "songs" are great..."Dry Cleaner" is in a way her tribute to Annie Ross' style, and is a wonderful word painting. "Lindsey" always demands a replay from me, such a brooding deep song. "Boogie Man" is also deep and fun at the same time, and she does a nice job of fleshing it out live as well. The only things I can do without are the Happy Birthday and raps between songs; while they add a unity to the project, they're a bit tiresome after the first listen. But most of them are only seconds long anyway, so no biggie. The bonus with the record are the great paintings that Joni did during this period. She was definitely unfettered & alive! How about Night Ride Home, Hejeria, do one of the live ones (for your "hits") and I'd say either Hissing or For the Roses. She'll get Court and Spark on her own after she listens to the four you've given her. That, next to Court and Spark, is my favorite Joni recording! I think the way she does Woodstock is extremely jazzy. I sing contemporary jazz and that song speaks to me like you wouldn't believe! I totally agree with you about "Amelia" as well. I am so sad that I never got to see all of them play together live, but I am grateful their performances were recorded. I consider Shadows and Light the ultimate concert. I am also mad about Pat Metheny's solo in Amelia and Jaco's bass playing in Heijera(sp?), Black Crow(wow!), as well as Dry Cleaner from Des Moines. Michael Brecker is also awesome during Black Crow, Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. I love her live version of Coyote too. I bought Shadows and Light and heard the live versions of her songs before I bought and heard the originals, so I am partial to them. This is an excellent recording and encompasses all of Joni's moods and styles. I love it! What a tremendous influence he was to the music industry. I loved what he did with Mark Knopler(sp?) from Dire Straits. I saw a special on him several months ago. He seemed to be a quiet, gentle man who knew he had a gift for the guitar. My understanding is that he helped many in the country music business get their start. I will miss him. Myself along with my fellow JMDL Hunters & Gatherers have scoured the globe and flipped over rocks to come up with another stellar rundown of hits & wanna be's...without further ado, let's look at the eclectic mix for this month, shall we? First...props to the contributors: Catherine T Stephen E. in NYC Mae Robertson Monica Now, on to the music... 1. Eva Marie – Caminando Ire One of my favorite things is finding a foreign language version of a Joni song. We've snagged a couple French versions of BSN, but here's one recorded in Spanish (?) Maybe Argentinian or Portuguese..no lo se! 2. Terry McCann – The Circle Game Another pretty version of the classic, this one's from a record made by a DJ who recorded it with some of his pals. 3. Chelsea – Chelsea Morning This girl has a great voice, and is cute, I'm talkin' Marsha Brady cute...she must have been an exchange student or something, because she's American but this was recorded in Hungary with Hungarian musicians. Whatever the case, it's a nice take. 4. Godfrey Daniel – Woodstock If this one doesn't make you LOL, I don't know what will...After the Amboy Dukes (Ted Nugent, Journey to the Center of Your Mind)broke up, they recorded this novelty record where they took classic rock songs from the late 60's/early 70's and performed them in doo-wop style. Woodstock gets a treatment ala "Runaway", "Runaround Sue", and The Cadets 1958 classic "Stranded In The Jungle". MUST be heard to be believed, and the whole album is a hoot!! 5. Kamahl – Both Sides Now From New Zealand, Kamahl's about 5'4" but has a rich bass voice. Hey you kids, no free reading those magazines! 6. Shawn Colvin – Urge For Going 7. Shawn Colvin – Conversation Thanks, hugs & kisses to Catherine T. for these excellent and UBER-rare Shawn tracks that are crystal clear!! These were NPR broadcast WAY back in 1975. WOW, what a find!! 8. Hugh Masekela – Both Sides Now Mr. "Grazin' In The Grass" puts his trumpet stamp on BSN, has a nice feel to it! 9. Mae Robertson – The Circle Game Donated by the artist herself, this is a very heartfelt version of Circle Game from her pretty CD, The Sun Upon the Lake is Low, which she bills as a kid's record for grown-ups. 10. Raison D’Etre – The Last Time I Saw Richard I LOVE this one! This trio from Kentucky performs Richard in amazing 3-part harmonies, picture the Roches doing it and you're not far off. Very unique, and very lovely. 11. Lydia van Dam – Love What else can I say about this amazing lady and her jazz band? She adds a nice jazz swing to the ballad, it'll send shivers up your bones. 12. Tom Scott – Woodstock A VERY pleasant surprise, recorded before Tom joined up with Joni. This was on his now-out-of-print record Great Scott, and although we identify Tom with the sax, he plays flute on this one. 'Tis sweet indeed! 13. Hank & Lewie Wickham – Both Sides Now Know nothing about these guys, they were probably construction workers in Nashville who thought they would try and cut a record. They're probably working on I-40 even as we speak! ;~) 14. Lonie Walker – Both Sides Now Typically I don't put the same song back to back, but these 2 BSN's are litereally night & day. Lonie is a Chicago Jazz singer, and this version is about 8-minutes long and features Lonie scatting herself silly. She also does some Janis covers on this CD, Rev Vince, and she's a dead ringer (no pun intended...). 15. Guv’ner – Help Me Here's another one that I love, because it's so different...imagine Red House Painters playing, with Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) handling the lead vocals, and you can hear it in your head. A very melancholic rendition. 16. Elaine Lucia – All I Want A nice NY jazz vocal on this one. 17. Mike Henderson – (You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care I know, I know, it's NOT Joni's song...but I'm a sucker for good rockabilly, and this one fits the billy! ;~) 18. The Pipe Dream – Night In The City Very obscure & different version from a 1969 folk-rock band. Well, there you have it...18 songs, 18 hits! Almost all of these are rare, out of print, and available HERE for the first time on CD. If you're interested in a copy, let me know and I'll hook you up. Bob S >> That reminds me of the tapes I made some time ago, probably after DJRD came out. First, I made a tape in chronological order of each Joni album's title track on one side of a 90-minute tape and on the other side in reverse order my favorite other song from each album. This tape was made to play for friends to show Joni's development and progression as a singer and songwriter. Then, because there were still so many songs I'd left out, I made another tape in the same style, with my next two favorite songs from each album, one on each side, only this time I made an effort to blend the songs better. Finally, after WTRF came out, I made a third tape with the songs I liked best from that album blended with songs I had not yet used from the previous ones. I had once heard a radio DJ segue the end of the live version of For Free into the opening of Harry's House and duplicated that, plus other combinations. It was this third tape that turned out to be the one I played the most. Unfortunately, I loaned to a former JMDL member to listen to while she was moving cross-country and she never returned it. And the inferior copy I had made no longer plays. Oh well, since then she's made a few more albums, so maybe one day I'll make another tape. But then, Dog Eat Dog turned me off to Joni so much that it took me years to get back to where I could enjoy Chalkmark or NRH. Being out in an industrial no where's ville, flat land and sharing a cab ride into 'Toon town with a band member from Song Solique. The weather was as beautiful as the people there.
