I am also interested in meeting the visiting jmdlers for drinks/dinner. ... I live relatively close too .. not as close as Catherine but close enough..and my sister does in fact live right at Harbourfront...hmmm hey sis wanna hold a joni fest??? Sunny Sunday Very cool as it features her only live recordings of Last Chance Lost, Borderline, & How Do You Stop. Makes for a great CD... Bob NP: Lucky Peterson, "Time" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 09:52:52 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: I'm 18, and I can do what I want... OK, so far no Alice Cooper covers of Joni, and maybe that's a good thing... Well, June is bustin' out all over, and so are these Joni covers, so here's a rundown on Volume 18. If you want to get a copy for your very own, you can send a blank music CD in a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Bob Muller 309 West Prentiss Ave. Greenville, SC 29605 Or, if you're baffled by blank CD's & SASE's just send me $5 to cover the costs of getting a copy back to you. Euro-jmdler's, get in touch with John van Tiel, maybe you already have... As always, I acknowledge and thank those who supplied some of the material: Steve Diguer (from Brother Love Canal) Stephen E in NYC Monica in Holland Cassy Christopher "Have an awesome day" Duzak Jeff Hankins in the UK Nikki John van Tiel Bill Pearson Here's the rundown of what you'll hear in this edition of the series: 1. Brother Love Canal - Both Sides Now: Who says you can't dance to Joni? Pump up the jam!! 2. Andrea Marcovicci - All I Want: Sadly, whatever party mode was cranked up is lost here. A warble reminiscent of Mrs. Miller... 3. John WIlliams - Woodstock: Classical Guitarist, he turns in a beautiful orchestrated version of Woodstock here. No cheese about it! 4. Lydia van Dam - River: Another nice treat from her tribute CD, which we've ALMOST used up, but not quite. A laid back jazzy-sounding confection. 5. Ray Brown - Both Sides Now: What to make of this one? There's a funny sorta metronome thing going on, and the vocal varies between soul and lounge. Pretty interesting. 6. Ginger Mackenzie - Help Me: A super version, and even a better CD. Ginger reminds me a lot of Edie Brickell, I've really enjoyed her record a lot. She doesn't vary Help Me too much, but then again one doesn't HAVE to... 7. Widow - This Flight Tonight: Mid 80's rock band does a cover of Nazareth's cover, at least this time we're treated to a female vocal, plus she's a hottie with some wicked boots! 8. Queen - You're So Square: Taken from a commercially released Wembley concert, this is Queen swinging the old tune much in the same vein as "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". 9. The Electronic Concept Orchestra - Both Sides Now: Maybe this was exciting 'concept' music when it came out in '69, but it's nothing but dullsville now. Not even good in a cheesy way. 10. Swingles II - In France They Kiss On Main Street: One of the highlights of this set for sure! A very fresh setting for the Swingles harmonies, and a nice cabaret group-jazz vocal take. Rollin', Rollin', rock and roooooollin'! 11. Baker St. Philharmonic - Woodstock: An Aussie instrumental with a vocal chorus thrown in. Nothing too original, but not bad either. 12. VH1 Girls & Guitars - Big Yellow Taxi: Features Heart, Amy Grant, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, and Wynnona doing an improv jam on BYT...they blow some of the lyrics BUT you can sincerely feel the respect they have for Joni and wishing she was there. 13. Pete Seeger - Both Sides Now: Those who have heard the live duet that Pete does with Joni have heard the extra verse he put in there. Here's the studio version, extra verse and all, with a very cute intro by Pete referring to Joni as a "long-legged girl from Canada"...it's a nice take on the song. 14. Diana Krall - A Case of You: Although this one doesn't vary much from the performance at the TNT tribute, I wanted to add it because it's SO good! This recording is from a promotional CD titled "Bushnell's Bash". If you haven't heard her cover of ACOY, this is a good chance. 15. Nashville Mandolin Ensemble - Goodbye Porkpie Hat: I LOVE this recording, reminds me a lot of David Grisman & his Dawggrass style of music. Very pretty acoustic version of the Mingus melody. 16. Caroline de Rooij - River: Hopefully there's enough room for TWO Dutch jazz vocal versions of River on one CD...sure hope so, because they're great, although they DO sound a little bit the same arrangement...wonder who heard whose version first. Reminds me of a party where 2 ladies show up in the same dress! 17. Amanda Firegold/Chad Preston - All I Want: I like this one a lot. Chad plays the guitar with the same intro and notes that Joni played on the dulcimer. The vocal by Amanda leaves a bit to be desired, but their heart is in the right place. This is a CD made by some NY college students who sent all the proceeds to a "music in elementary schools" program. 18. Ian McShane - Both Sides Now: I expected this British crooner to come out with a cheesy version, but this one is actually quite nice! Thanks to those who've made it this far...if you have any questions about the covers project, please ask. There are plenty of ways you too can be a contributor to the greatest covers collection in the known world! Would anyone know which one?>> This Flight Tonight...matter of fact it was a huge hit, much more known (outside of these circles) as a NAZARETH song than a Joni song. We have both their studio version and their unplugged version (which I prefer) in the collection. Think of the intro to Heart's "Barracuda" and you have a feel for Nazareth's treatment of the song. << Question 2: I understand that Prince covered "A Case of You." Is this one on a previous Joni Covers volume? >> Not on a previous volume, Julius, but rather a future one...thanks to Ron Greer we have a nice copy of his live 1983 recording which will show up on Volume 21. If you just gots to have an early copy of that one, Julius, I can talk to my Board of Directors and see what I can do...;~) << Question 3: On a related note, Prince songs "Tangerine" and "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" are said to be related to Joni somehow. Anyone know the connection? >> Don't know the Tangerine answer, but Dorothy Parker features a reference to "Help me"... "Mind if I turn on the radio?" "Oh, my favorite song" she said And it was Joni singing "Help me I think I'm falling" (Ring) The phone rang and she said "Whoever's calling can't be as cute as U" Right then I knew I was through (Dorothy Parker was cool) Bob NP: Karen Oberlin, "Barangrill" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 18:50:31 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: I'm 18, and I can do what I want... And I don't mean in Los Angeles temperatures. Last Tuesday night, Brad and I were out celebrating his father's 82nd birthday. When we arrived home, there were two semi-frantic messages on our machine. Both from my enduring pal, Dianna. Concerned by the tone of her voice, I immediately called her back. She asked if she could come over immediately. She indicated nothing was really wrong, but she had to see me immediately, regardless of the late hour. Of course I told her to come right over. Rather than me tell this story, I asked Dianna to send me an email about her adventure I could post to the JMDL. Here's what I received (and am sending verbatim): Tuesday, 5:15 P.M. May 29, 2001 Dearest Rick: This afternoon, on my way to the gym, I had a most unique experience that I must share with you. It was a beautiful, sunny southern California day that lent itself to shopping before working out with my trainer. I stopped by the lovely French boutique, Agnes b. on North Robertson at Alden on the border of LA and Beverly Hills to try on a skirt I had been thinking about purchasing. The store was nearly empty and I proceeded to try on a couple of different skirts. As I was giving myself the *once over* in the mirror, I realized I wasn't certain which fitting room I had been using. I almost started in the wrong one when, luckily, the sales girl directed me to the right dressing room. At that point I realized that the person in the room right next to me was none other than Joni Mitchell. The dressing rooms at Agnes b. are simply an off white canvas fabric floor-to-ceiling on 3 sides and then your mirror is on the wall on the fourth. I knew I had to call you to somehow come to the shop while Joni was there but I was sure she would be able to hear me through the curtains and would think I was a psycho. If I spoke softly, I was sure you wouldn't be able to understand me on the cell phone. So, I was compelled to take drastic measures. We happened to buy our purchases at the same time and at this point, we were the only two in the store. I said, "I love your work." To which she replied, "Oh, thank you." As we were standing next to each other at the counter, I continued. "I never do this, but would you mind terribly signing an autograph for my friend, Rick?" She said, "Oh no, not at all, I'd be happy to." Not being shy by nature I said, "Rick is your biggest fan. He has Joni parties all the time." She said, "Do you listen to the music or what?" I said, "Yes, only your music. The last time he invited me to a Joni party I said, 'Joni who?' and I immediately got an email back that said, 'Don't be a bitch. There is only one Joni.'" [The sales girl then said as she took Joni's credit card -- "it is Joni Mitchell!" and I looked at her like, "well, duh!"] The sales girl said there were some postcards by the make up. Joni went to get one and signed it just for you. Since it has a picture of lips on the card, I said, "What a great card. Perfect." She said, "I should kiss it for him" and picked out a tester lipstick from the makeup counter and kissed it just for you on both sides. I told her it would probably be framed within 3 hours knowing you. I thanked her profusely for making my day and allowing me to give you a special surprise. She is as beautiful as you would expect, perfect cheekbones and all. She was wearing a straw brimmed hat and very casually, but nicely dressed. Sorry I didn't notice her purchases as I was trying to decide if I should block her car until you could get there! You know I would do anything for you, but kidnapping...maybe not. Enjoy your own personal autograph from Joni Mitchell. I love you, Dianna Me again: What Dianna failed to mention was Joni actually kissed the card on both sides. She kissed the colored side, over the illustrated lips. It didn't show up well, so she turned it over and kissed the white back, over her signature and greeting. Knowing Dianna, this meant even more to me. She has a very interesting, large circle of friends (including this not-as-interesting correspondent) and is well acquainted with many people of celebrated lives. Asking for an autograph doesn't come naturally to her. What she said was right, Brad just got back from the framer and the card is framed beautifully with an opening in back showing the front of the card and Joni's *other kiss.* It took him a bit more than three hours, but it was worth the wait! End of Joni Content. Now for the This-N-That: I just got back laaaatttteee last night from San Francisco. On Friday, my good pal Gary and I took two people riding in the 8th Annual California AIDS Ride to the start in San Francisco. Over three thousand people are riding a course of 575 miles from SF to Los Angeles. It was an amazing and very moving experience to just attend the opening and see our friends on their way. We followed the beautiful beginning of the course Sunday and Monday, stopping at various places to cheer the riders along. We held huge signs thanking and encouraging the riders and had a CD on the BoomBox that repeatedly played the song *You Sexy Thing* by Hot Chocolate. The lyrics were perfect and the passing riders loved it. I Believe in Miracles.... We began to get a reputation among the riders -- there are those two guys again!! It was a blast and felt so good to be even a peripheral part of such an amazing sacrifice made by these gentle people. It's a particularly important year for the ride as we recognize the twentieth anniversary of the AIDS virus. Twenty years. Thursday, I am having my tonsils removed and having some minor throat surgery. The last seven days have prepared me well. I am such a chicken. I've been told I won't be able to speak for a week, which some consider a reprieve. But, I can sure read and type, so, until then...
