Bob NP: Lightnin' Hopkins, "Prison Blues Come Down on Me" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 07:30:29 -0400 From: "Blair Fraipont" Subject: Re: Joni on Dylan cont. lyrics to Desolation Row >They're selling postcards of the hanging My History 206 professor actually made a comment about this specific line in class 2 months ago. We were discussing the lynchings of African Americans in the 1880's and 90's and Ida B. Wells effort to have them stopped. She mentioned this line and stated how they would make actuall postcard-like memorabilia of a recent hanging. She also mentioned that the line was referring to that time period. That may have been true, but I think if anything it represents more of what was going on in the 1960's in the south and elsewhere in the United States.
