Well, everyone. > carrry on.>>> hello Blair...yes the wonderful Mr.Gross also introduced me to FTR last summer...so dont feel bad...even long time Joni fans like me are still learning. For the Roses has so much meaning. It is a beauteous work and to me, it just keeps getting better. BTW, glad you two met finally :)) This list is a place of Joni wonder and discovery as we all share what we know, love and enjoy about Joni and her music. As I mentioned, Brian suggested this tape for my own 'night ride home' . When he found out I had not heard Top 12 yet, he said something about oh...wait until you hear her piano. I know he gets such a kick out of hearing me discover these things for myself so he didnt let on that I was in for such an amazing treat. For me, it was a bit of a time warp, a step back into Joni's history, this deeply moving, haunting space inside Two Grey Rooms . Oh I know what you mean, it does leave me speechless. I think the way she sets it up by talking about the french language just makes the listening that much sweeter. She paints this little drama and talks about how she has no lyrics yet and wonders how she will come up with words which fall into the sounds she makes....then she starts that vocalise which just sends me. Something so deeply emotional going on there. Stirs me to the core. This is available on the Tree....so if any of you have not heard it....well, you know the drill. love, Mags --------------------------------------------------------------------- _~O / /\_, ___/\ /_ - ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 05:49:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Ian Cropton Subject: Re: ...For the Roses So how many Delaware listers are there? I'm in Newark, DE. And for some Joni content, I always liked FTR from the get go. 'Ludwigs Tune' would be my fave pick. It took me a long time (duh) to figure out what 'Barandgrill' was all about, and it was my least favorite track for a long time. 'Cold Steel and Blue Fire' is also wonderful. In a way, it is THE key transition record of her career, encompassing where she started with guitar-oriented tunes, building on her piano-driven songs, taking her first major "bite at the hand that feeds music biz", and even introducing her foray into jazz arrangements and symphonic music. Lyrically, she explores her relationship with her parents, with her peers, with her career and her art, and luckily for us closes with a song that not only encourages Beethoven to keep on keepin' on, but provides self-encouragement as well. She's brave enough to take on the record industry, and confounds them by throwing in a "Fuck" on one of the more radio-friendly melodies on it, making it instantly unairable. Thanks to the FTR fans here, I've been driven to keep digging here, and although I haven't lost good sleep, I have discovered a lot of great music! Eventually this fine rendition will come to light. Anyway, during Ken Burns' epic documentary "Jazz", there was an old jazz song that was very close to this line. I don't have my notes handy but it was very close. Anyone know it? David Lahm? Simon? Fred Simon?" Now me: I'm sure the song you're thinking of, Jim, was Louis Armstrong's longtime theme, "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," written by Leon Rene, Otis Rene, and Clarence Muse. Armstrong opened and closed his sets with it for many years. My favorite versions can be found in The California Concerts, some great early-'50s performances of the All Stars reissued by Decca in 1992 in a 4-CD set. Here are the lyrics, at least as sung by Armstrong: Now the pale moon's shinin' on the fields below The folks are crooning soft and low You needn't tell me, boss, because I know When it's sleepy time down south Yes, the soft wind blowin' through the pinewood trees The folks down there live a life of ease When ol' Mammy falls on her knees, yes When it's sleepy time down south Steam boats up the river a-comin' and goin' (followed by scat) Splashin' the night away (followed by scat) You hear those banjos ringin', and the folks are singin' And they dance the night away Dear old Southland, with this dreamy song You take me back where I belong Right here in my Mammy's arms When it's sleepy time down south Boston Jim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 07:39:15 -0700 From: Steve Dulson Subject: That Coyote Guy Gary Zack wrote: >I thought I read somewhere that Coyote was supposedly Neil Young... and Mark Domyancich wrote: >There was a discussion long ago that Coyote was possibly Peter Coyote >but someone asked him about the song and he didn't take credit for >the character.
