Yesterday on BBC Radio 2, in the UK, Joni was voted Number 55 (!) in the 'Top 100 Voices of the 20th Century'. They played 'A case of you'. Positions were worked out from: listeners votes, record sales and the deliberations of an 'expert' panel of judges. Hi to all fellow Joni fans, my name is Mitch, I live in New York about 60 miles north of New York City. I have an interesting Joni story for all of you. A little over 20 years ago when I was in college, I bought a small lithograph of the cover painting of the "Mingus" album. It came in a heavy stock linen envelope with metallic lettering that says "Joni Mitchell" and "Mingus" underneath. Joni signed the left corner of the lithograph "97/100 Mingus", and the right corner "Joni Mitchell 79", both in thin brown marker. The person I bought it from was in the record business and he told me that Joni had 100 of these made, and had given them out to friends for Christmas. Anyway, I never displayed it, and for over twenty years it lay safely in storage. Well I finally decided to get it professionaly framed, and it now hangs proudly on my wall (over my CD collection I might add). Has anyone out there ever heard this story about the lithographs? Seen another one of these? I was listening to Acoustic Sunrise on WUMB (wumb.org for streaming audio) and heard a lovely instrumental piano cover of Rainy Night House by Barbara Higbie. It's apparently on a new release, that I think is called "Happy Endings." I'm always amazed at how much Joni's music is in my blood. I know every note (well, maybe not the most recent stuff, but probably because I didn't grow up with it...). There's something about hearing those familiar notes that says 'home.' A few weeks ago my twim sister and I were driving up to her country house in New Hampshire. She was playing a tape of songs by various artists. There was some Joni from FTR - and we sang together, with me 'putting on a harmony.' Also, I'm wondering if anyone remembers David Buskin's songs "He Used to Treat Her" and "For the Children." lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 09:59:46 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: New Member.... Welcome to the JMDL. Lots of fun and interesting things lie ahead. I have heard that it was a common practice for Joni to get the record company to print lithographs of her work that she would then give as gifts. In more recent years, lithographs of her work have been sold at her concerts. The more recent lithographs are not of the same quality as the earlier ones. Hang onto yours, as the value will increase. As a fan, I'm sure you would never dream of parting with it! I have never seen a lithograph of "Sweet Sucker Dance" (the title of the painting that graces the Mingus cover) but would love to see, not to mention own, one (this is one of my favorite Joni paintings). Again, welcome to the list. I think the original price was somewhere around $35,000 and was reduced to somewhere around $25,000--these figures aren't exact (I may have the pages bookmarked at the office--I'll check tomorrow) but I do remember that the asking price was in the $20-30K range. I guess that it is being auctioned on E-Bay because they couldn't find a buyer with that kind of money (and I'm sure they will get more exposure on E-Bay). It explains what happened to the other 3 melodies that Mingus wrote for Joni: Not all of the music Mingus had in mind for Mitchell to work on turned out to be suitable. "Of the melodies he gave me, two I never could get into, because they were too idiomatic for me. A third one was extremely beautiful, but I couldn't get into that either because the theme was extremely difficult." Mingus referred her to a passage in his autobiography, "Beneath the Underdog," in which there was a discourse with Navarro about God. "It was his own metaphorical description of God and relationship to God. I just couldn't lift that literally and make it adhere to his melody. That threw me into my own confrontation with my own metaphors about God and it boggled by mind - it fried my brain. So that one, and the two others, never got finished. Me again. So it appears she may have attempted to put lyrics to one or more of these but never completed them Mark in Seattle with thanks to Les & the JMDL articles data base ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 11:49:39 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Joni Mitchell Has Her Mojo Working Here's another interesting tidbit from the same article. It kind of makes me wonder what she had in mind when she finally got around to recording WTRF. Mark in Seattle PS: 'this venture' referred to in the first sentence is the Mingus album Having established a firm jazz relationship through this venture, will she undertake anything else along comparable lines? "I'm not sure," said Joni Mitchell slowly. "Eventually, if not in the next album, I'd like to experiment more with rhythm. I might do a completely acoustic album, almost like a folk album, but harmonically it would be different from folk music. "You know, pigeonholes all seem funny to me. I feel like one of those lifer-educational types that just keep going for letters after their name. I want the full hyphenate - folk-rock-country-jazz-classic...so finally, when you get all the hyphens in, maybe they'll drop them all and get down to just some American music." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 17:03:21 EDT From: Gertus@aol.com Subject: Film news (SJC) So, who's looking forward to seeing the film of "About a Boy" starring Hugh Grant? We've got a long wait as it's not out til 2001 but the question is will they give sufficient prominence to Joni's music? If you haven't read the book it's about the relationship of a single man with the young mixed up son of a depressive Joni addict who has been brought up solely on Joni's music. The boy gradually becomes more accepted by his peers as he is introduced to current trends in music, clothing and football! Surely, potential for a nice soundtrack album here. This weekends papers are full of Captain Corelli's Mandolin which is released in the UK in May but not in the States until the fall, apparently in a bid for some Oscars. This film is of special interest to me as my mandolin teacher, Alison Stephens plays on the soundtrack, but I read and loved the book long before I took up the instrument. It's filmed where the book is set, on Cephalonia and features a spectacular set which friends of mine visited during shooting. It's a love story set during the second world war but the slightly unsatisfying ending has been changed apparently. I was impressed to learn that Nicholas Cage learnt to play the mandolin for the part. Finally, Bridget Jones - yet another book adaptation from a British novelist. I'm going to see it this week but have been slightly unconvinced by the main character in the clips I've seen so far, although there doesn't seem to be much wrong with the accent so maybe I'm misjudging her. Partch is probably the most original composer I have ever heard. Totally unlike anything else. RE: I just discovered another one. Her name is Ute Lemper and she is a very classy and mah-velous German cabaret singer. Though I am a grad student in psychology, last semester I had the fortune to take an undergrad cabaret class (for kicks) taught by famed cabaret singer Joan Morris, and one of the songs I interpreted was a Kurt Weill song that Ute interprets... She does a lot of Kurt Weill. So I listened to her singing "I'm a stranger here myself" and was intrigued... but let it lie. Last night Ute played a small venue here in Ann Arbor, so I went and sat in the cheapo student seats. I really like Ute Lemper too! One of the two or three people in the world that seem born to sing the music of Kurt Weill ( I would put Lotte Lenya and the incredible Dagmar Krause on that list as well). Check out Lemper's cd Berlin Cabaret Songs. It's great! It's also available in two editions-English and German. The disc is all cabaret songs written during the Weimar Republic.
