------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 03:07:21 -0700 From: Robert Holliston Subject: Re: art:useful? Yes, yes, I say. As the proud possessor of a genuine hand-painted-by-Kakki martini glass, I have to say that it is both a work of art and a useful addition to my kitchen (even if I only use it on very special occasions). It has a STAS motif and I will always cherish it. As for what constitutes popular rather than high art, I have to offer only this: only a few centuries ago, composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart and Rossini were compelled to write new works as fast as they could, because the public simply wasn't interested in last week's music. Even the composers had no expectation that their work would have a life beyong the season during which it was first heard. Today, of course, many people regard the works of these and other composers not only as classics but as standard bearers. So, who's to know? What is considered ephemeral in one century may well become a classic in a subsequent one. The main thing is to enjoy, keep an open mind about, and learn from the exposure to whatever art we're privileged enough to encounter. Love it or hate it, it's there to provoke feelings and, if you're lucky, discussion. Not a very intellectual contribution, alas, but I send my very best wishes to everybody by way of compensation ;-) Roberto np Mahler Das Lied von der Erde Kakki wrote: > A hand-painted martini glass. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 08:16:53 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: art:useful? well, there is the place in the hamptons where i usually buy all these tchotchkes [stephen epstein: what is this place called? you know, the place where i bought my slinky and the bicycle thing] and they have all these gadgets and stuff that are not only useful but also beautiful in a very artistic way. but then, what do i know? i collect heinz jars... wallyK, who finds beauty in almost everything and art in almost anything. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 09:42:25 -0400 From: Heather Subject: Re: art:useful? yes... my beautiful, frosted, hejira martini glass is handsomely displayed next to my wedgewood in the hutch in the dining room. heather ps - glad you are back, kakki :-) At 09:09 PM 4/12/01 -0700, Kakki wrote: >A hand-painted martini glass. > > > > Art that is useful: > > > > A handcrafted musical instrument > > A delicious meal > > A handmade sweater > > An inlaid table > > A Frank Lloyd Wright building > > Calligraphy > > Anything that soothes the spirit, or enriches the mind (ie a song, > > a book, a painting) > > > > RR ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 07:01:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Ian Cropton Subject: Useful art My wife gave me a beautiful glass bong for Christmas this year. This Clay Artist is drawn out of lurkdom by the "useful art" thread! There is a long standing argument in the "Art World, commonly fought over ceramic pieces, about Art vs. Craft. Take for example a bowl. What if it is a beautifully hand-thrown and painted bowl? What about tupperware? Craft or Art? Where is the line drawn? Some purist say if it has a function, period, it is Craft, not Art. This has led my husband to make only non-functional pieces so that he can call it Art. Some of his pieces strongly resemble teapots but have no bottom, rendering them non-functional. RE: IMO there are a great many suits suitable for Emperors being run up in the lofts and workshops of our capital cities - for my money (not that I will be parting with it), this would include practically anything that is described as "conceptual". Lots of postings on the nature of art lately that I'm finding really interesting. Edward's comments on conceptual art (hi edward, welcome.) made me think of something: Conceptual art (actually much of contemporary art) needs a basic working knowledge of western art history in order to be understood fully. Think of John Cage. One can listen to his music and find it enjoyable, but to gain a full appreciation of it you need to know what has come before. The radical approaches and deconstructionist impulses would not be seen as nearly so unusual had the listener not been familiar with what was being revolted against. Same with visual art. Conceptual art, with it's lack of reliance on an art object, materials, craft, etc. and it's emphasis on ideas owes a great deal to how art had been concieved up to that point. It is in part a reaction to art as commodity and art as object. Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
