I've seen it done many times, and have done it many times myself. maybe I'm guilty of it here. But I re-read my last post and while it seems bitchy, I don't se it as an attack on anyone. At least that wasn't my intent. I certainly was NOT blasting Shane. I WAS suggesting that perhaps he was feeling attacked, not that he was attacking anyone. In defense of Shane (and what feels like an attack on me, but again, see what I wrote above) Harper Lou writes: "In that regard, everyone is full of their own self-importance, because it's impossible to say what's on other people's minds." Now read this from Shane's post: "...even jokes about 'church of joni' and the like would appall her...would she want to, stumbling across the list, hear phrases like that?...it would make her not want to ever see the list again, if even it is a tongue and cheek joke..." This sounds an awful lot to me like Shane is saying what's on Joni's mind, or what would be if she saw the Church of Joni posts. Harper Lou claims this is "just wondering what Joni might think". Funny thing, in this case, I can't tell the difference betwen that and saying wnat's on other people's minds. Can you explain the difference? Really, all I was trying to do was get people to lighten up a bit. I do beleive that it's all too easy to take this stuff way too seriously. And yes, TI've fallen victem to tht too. The background music whilst we were eating was quite loud so we had to shout at each other a bit, but hey, it was The Stones, mostly, so I don't think Jessica minded much - thanks, Jacky (Gertus) for inviting me and setting it all up (I think we have another recruit for Cropredy next year, Ashara!) - and sorry I didn't get the chance to say goodbye - I just turned around and you were gone. (Might even inspire Boston Jim to come out of his dark corner! ;~D) A Chair In the Sky, Sweet Sucker Dance, Dry Cleaner, Pork Pie Hat were all Mingus compositions that existed WAY before this project. Joni added the words. Boogie Man & Lindsey are totally Joni's, words & music. Now you asked about the concept of what constitutes a "Joni cover" regarding the Mingus stuff. And it gets interesting, because it's totally subjective...I think of the following songs as "Joni songs" because the first time I heard them was when I heard Joni do them: You're So Square, Baby I Don't Care Twisted How Do You Stop All the Mingus songs The following I *don't* think of Joni songs: Why Do Fools Fall In Love Centerpiece Cool Water Corrina, Corrina My Best to You Everything on BSN EXCEPT BSN (duh!) and ACOY Because I associate them with other artists. Now, to further cloud the issue, if you do a little bit of research you'll soon discover that just about every Jazzer (and some rocker as well) has done "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat". Do we need them all? I would say no. Obviously, if they have Joni's words as part of the performance, then it becomes a must have. If it's an instrumental performance that really stands out, then I would say let's include it. I'd like to add Jeff Beck's performance of Pork Pie to the collection, just because of his reputation and notoriety. I recently picked up a version of Pork Pie by the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble, six mandolinists performing it. Haven't heard it yet, but am anxious to. Also, it's worth pointing out that there is another writer who put lyrics to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat". I'll have to do some more research into that as I'm ignorant on that point at present. Hope that answers the question...there are probably about 100 versions of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat out there, so if we try and snag them all, we're gonna get too far away from our target I think. Come on, show some imagination, pally! It could mean a whole bunch of things. I was at the dentist this a.m. gettin' me teeth cleaned, and the song was going through my head, but I kept getting interrupted by other thoughts, losing my place and having to start all over again. This establishes time and place but is otherwise completely irrelevant, but boy, are my teeth clean and shiny now and I just thought everyone should know! I can't speak for you, so I'll speak for me. Here's my take, and here's the quote (once again): "Went to see a friend last night/ it was very late when I walked in/ my talking, as it rambled,/ revealed suspicious reasoning/ My visit seemed to darken him &c" On one hand, it's paranoid or disjointed thoughts. ("Maybe it's paranoia, or maybe it's sensitivity"). She's rambling and making connections that don't necessarily make sense. The logic is flawed. (which is interesting, because later, as she sings the song, she *knows* the reasoning was suspicious, the logic flawed). I bet she was drunk and/or high at the time, making all these weird connections, mulling over this relationship, this lover of hers with the weird friends who seem to be passing judgment on her all the time, this relationship in which she can't really be herself. Suspicious reasoning - she is suspicious in her reasoning (suspecting everyone and using her suspicion as the basis for her reasoning), and her reasoning is suspect. Yeah, that's it - the duality thing again. I'll shut up now. Just to name a few: KARIN - we`ll meet this year HOPEFULLY/of course - and probably/unfortunately we4ll have a very intimate Joni-meeting - just the two of us, and some our friends who only want to celebrate Karin4s birthday and who don4t mind that we DO have a passion FOR MUSIC AND LYRICS - but, really and HOPEFULLY: there must be more GERMANS - in 1983 when I attended J.M4s first (her last?) concert at Frankfurt - there were thousands - - SO, where are you? Only Karin and me? NO OF COURSE NOT!!! WALLY thanks for your testament - and although all the others down the JMDL don4t know what I4m talking/writing about (but WE DO KNOW, don4t we) - yes, that was one of those moment in time I/we got in touch - and I do love you - and (of course) you know, ALL DOWN THE JMDL; they4ll smile, and they4ll say YES - because you4re a MAN of HEART and MIND and SOUL.... GARRET GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR EXAMS (4 weeks?) - you know, or at least and at last I know/feel - she - I.B. - WAS a great LADY, and - yes, of course - another time, another history; but, after that/her experience(s) ; AND AFTER ALL THESE YEARS - I do understand, why she wrote it down: "ALL DAYS" - because of all her suffering during that dark period, and because of all that suffering of human beings - those of heart and mind and soul - and because of all those who tried to survive THEN and who are trying to live and who are trying to survive NOW... and - although history has gone a long way, even now: "The weak has entered (invaded) the firezone, the uniform of today is patience (endurance), and the decoration is the poor star of HOPE above the (your) heart" - just a few lines - and you know the rest, and of course, you don4t have to give a statement (sic), read it, and maybe YOU4ll feel it, and we4ll leave it at THAT. and - STEVE - same to you - got it? - please read the following, hopefully you4ll get it.... ASHARA - thanks for helping me to get in touch with the Video Tree - and I got in touch - with Steve in Scotland, and hopefully - soon I4ll get my first videos, And reading down the JMDL: you are/must be a great lady! AND, hopefully - one day down there we4ll meet. and KAKKI, it4s good that you4re back, you were missed by some/many, and - in a way - I missed you - down the JMDL. And KOBUS - HELLO - and what your message has given me: a warm feeling for another human being, and to all of you - not called by their first name: Most of you have given me some sort of inspiration or at least a VERY BIG SMILE, and TO ALL OFYOU: YOU SHALL NOT WEEP SAYS ONE MUSIC OTHERWISE NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING - some lines of the Austrian poet, and another great lady, the late Ingeborg Bachmann, who died in 1973 DON`T YOU ALL GET THAT MOMENT(S), listening to Joni Mitchell - her music, words? And for that moment(s) in time IT`S COMFORT ! And I leave it at THAT (you know - these Germans - can4t get enough of it, and going on and on..., and of course: they leave you behind with: PLEASE DO EXCUSE MY ENGLISH; if you know what I mean..., So make the best out of this...)
