A recent show at the Jazz Cafe was great. Apart from her own stuff - 'Amoureuse' is a classic - she has some great covers in her live set - and on her live album 'Almost Naked http://www.tickety-boo.com/kiki/. This is what she says about a couple of Canadian songwriters:- 'Carey' "What can I say, I really like this Joni Mitchell song. Part of me thinks I shouldn't cover her because she's so good, but for the live album it was fun, and the more I sing it, the better I get. It is possible to make a song your own if you don't just copy the original." And this is what she says about her Jane Siberry covers: Miss Punta Blanca: "She is a fine Canadian singer-songwriter and we put this song in the set one night because its funny and very different from anything else I was singing at the time. The first time I sang it on the tour I was feeling my way and I remember the audience being a bit bemused by it. Needless to say it has to be sung with real confidence because its so quirky and so Jane Siberry. The song is about a girl observing another girl win a beauty contest - I wonder where the idea evolved?" Calling All Angels: "Last but not least a brilliant song from Jane Siberry which I really love. I think you should listen to this song if you get the chance and see what you think." Talking of the wonderful 'Sib', I see from her museletter that she'll be singing two songs as part of the 'Bluebird North' Songwriters Series at the Rivoli Club in Toronto, Canada next Tuesday - March 27. Other people playing that night (all new to me) are Wendell Ferguson, Violet Ray, Lisa Patterson, Dean McTaggart, Andy Maize and, Josh Finlayson (Skydiggers), hosted by Tom Wilson from Junkhouse. For someone who has never smoked, you seem to have a really complete picture of why people smoke and what it does to them.. I just wanted to reply to one thing you said: > ... but surely Joni knows that the risk > increases with exposure, the more she smokes > the higher her risk. as long as she *does* know > the facts, then it is her *choice* to smoke, just > like it is her choice to paint, her choice to sing! The thing about smoking, at least for most people, is that it isn't a *choice* at all. It's an *addiction*. This is a big and important difference. People who smoke and are addicted (it is possible to smoke without being addicted) are driven to smoke by something (or things) within themselves beyond their control - the physical addiction itself, the psychological addiction to having something in their hands, the habits developed over time during smoking, plus of course all the reasons smokers give for smoking - anxiety, glamor, clarity of thought, etc., etc. I smoked heavily for 15 years and never thought I could quit - tried cold turkey, tried to OD, tried cutting down - nothing worked until I tried not inhaling every cigarette I smoked. I allowed myself to smoke whenever I wanted to as long as I didn't inhale and I still have that permission. The first three days were horrible, but after that, without even trying, I was smoking half the number of cigarettes I had smoked previously. I also did some psychological things to retrain my brain - like breaking smoking habit patterns, thinking of all the bad things about smoking whenever I did light up, and some other stuff. After three months, I was down to just a few cigarettes every day (less than 7, sometimes only 1 or 2). Then I really went cold turkey, still with permission to smoke as long as I didn't inhale. That was in 1983. I have been pretty much smoke free since then (maybe I've had a total of about 20 cigarettes since then - I still enjoy an occasional cigarette without inhaling). I know I will never be addicted again and it is such a relief to be free. I can think as clearly or more clearly than I could when I smoked. Food tastes a lot better. I have more friends. I enjoy breathing clean air. There are so many advantages to not smoking. All of the excuses that addicted smokers use to keep smoking are just excuses, and Joni's Hawaiian excuse is about the silliest and stupidest excuse I have ever heard, and her insistence on smoking in non-smoking areas is embarrassing. Having said this, I also know from personal experience that smoking addictively is one of the hardest things on earth to change. You're saying they don't give her any money, she says she doesn't make any money. But remember most all these comments from her are with respect to the Geffen era. She and Geffen had a strange business trade-off, I think. She made no money but keeps her name/art out there; he mades no real money in the short term but gets to claim her as a prized trophy (class-added value) to his label. But his advantage is that he can get the slow but steady profits over time from the catalogue. I always thought it was obvious that Geffen did virtually nothing to promote her. Warner/Reprise has done much more in the past few years. The people who pick up Hits or the Grammy-winning BSN are likely to add a few from the Geffen pile to their collection. You all (or y'all to my Southern pals) must remember Bette Davis' penchant for smoking -- and how she worked it into her image. I think our own Joni may be doing some of the same. Case and point. At the Los Angeles (never resort to referring to my city as simply L..A. around me, but El Lay is cool!) and the Chicago concert, she integrated her habit at *exactly* the same time on stage - just before, Troubled Man - her encore. At the Chicago concert, where I could see her facial expressions much better, I saw her grin knowingly, as if we all expected her to show up with a fag in her hand. Like she was giving us what we expected. At the Los Angeles concert, my (non-Joni and semi antismoking) boyfriend said, "She does this cigarette thing for the image, huh?" I flashed on that in Chicago, and I think that's true. It seemed kinda orchestrated to me. On some video, I saw her smoking as well. This was sometime in the 1980s and I said to myself, "Oh no, Joni, you can hold off till the cameras stop." Maybe, it's the Hollywood spin machine, image makers coming out in her. I certainly don't doubt she loves her fags, but I think it's a lot about her public persona. It worked for Bette - set her apart. So how did Margo Timmins buy her farm? What has Jonatha been living on? John Hiatt? How did David Lahm get to make a second album in a wonderful but restrictive niche market of Jazz fans who know Joni? If it's impossible to make money on a "short" run, then the entire CD industry in the UK is losing money and actually folded decades ago despite appearances. :) The assertion that Joni's albums don't make money just doesn't hold up under scrutiny. My two cents, Lama Ranger Rick remembers: *************** Joni has stated in interviews that none of her records have ever made money. The only reason she can make a living from music is that she owns the publishing rights to her music.
