We were all in a big warehouse apartment here in the UK. Joni had this really weird hi fi set up with a really long arm for the stylus. The arm must have been sevral feet long and attached the ceiling where it glided down nicely to the turntable. I kpet trying to put the stylus on the album but it kept sliding off. I then realised the album was a cd so din't need a stylus. Joni was very nice and just mingled. She asked me for two things-to get her a packet of Gauloise(sp?) and also wanted one of my puppies(that in the dream looked like cats). I refused as she wasn't at home enough! (this warehouse flat was her UK home) Also, a woman that looked like Sue Cameron but was called Helen or Heather announced she was pregnant.(sue is the only female JMDLer I have met face to face) Dreams are weird. - -- bw colin colin@tantra.fsbusiness.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/tantra_apso/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2001 17:29:59 +0100 From: "Francesco Lucarelli" Subject: The 2-book set "Crosby, Stills, Nash and sometimes Young" March 5th, 2001 Dear Friends, We regret to inform you at this time, the publication of our book project: "Crosby, Stills, Nash and sometimes Young" is being delayed. This is due to a change in management at Kempen Publishers. The agency is redirecting their focus and does not want to pursue the completion of this project. We want to have a publisher that believes in our project and are therefore seeking other avenues. We are not sure how long this will take, but be assured that we will NOT abandon this project that has been in the works for the past 10 years. We will use this extra time to our advantage. This is an opportunity to further our research and bring the project to the highest level. We are now trying to contact everyone who sent payment in advance. Refunds will be given and no credit cards will be charged. If you have any further questions, please contact Lucien via email at: Luus.van.Diggelen@chello.nl Thanks for your patience and understanding. We will make an announcement when we have a new publisher, along with ordering information. Good things are worth waiting for.... But in a way, so what? > It's almost a no-brainer to agree with that statement. I also agree that > Tom's contribution "worked" better in the studio than on the live album. You know, this whole thing about what artists were better than others, and which albums were better than others needs to be dissected somewhat. As an artist, I believe you play with whom you know and have contacts with at the time. As you grow with experience you make more contacts, play with many other people and you try different things. An artist may settle in with the "crowd" so to speak, and cut an album. If it worked, you cut another, adding a player or two, dropping one or two, or doing whatever is necessary to get the feel you want. I think this is very "healthy" for a solo artist and they have that freedom of not being stuck in a band. That's why Joni's work appeals to me so much. Her songwriting has been rock solid every time while playing with so many artists. My favorite just happens to be Metheny, Pastorius, and Mays, but I like everything. That's why when the next Joni Mitchell comes out I will get it without listening to it first. It's just the next thing she does. I haven't had a Joni dream for a long time but last night I had a very vivid one. Is there a full moon or something? Here goes: My wife and I were on vacation at some unknown place and looking at antiques. We were looking at this strange monstrous ceramic statue which had a mermaid head and body on it. As we went around it and saw the other side it was an old fashioned cast iron stove though still with a ceramic finish - it was a dirty yellow color. On one corner of it were some strange foreign looking canisters that held who knows what but gave the impression that the stove was still being used. Now into the dream comes a foreign man who seems to be selling these antiques and asks me if I would be interested in buying and old radio he bought. It is quit large for a portable radio (about the size of a loaf of bread) and a strange shape, similar to the front end of a 1960ish car and the knobs are where the headlights would be if it was a car and the bumper is where the radio shoes the stations. As I turn it over I notice it is signed by Joni Mitchell 1970 and I recognize her signature though it looks like it came from a younger hand than from the signature I'm used to seeing. Not quite as many flourishes but definitely Joni's signature. I ask him about it. He says he bought it from Graham Nash who came in one morning in bad shape and sold it to him. When he sees I'm interested he says I can have it for $170. I'm besides myself at this point because I want it so badly but of course just like in real life I'm flat broke so I can't buy it from him. I ask him if he knows Joni which I figure is possible since he seems to know Graham. He says yes he used to cook for her while she was on vacation. I ask him if Joni ever wrote a song for/about him. He says he has no idea, he just met her for a short period of time then she disappeared from his life. At this point I start waking up and I'm thinking to myself "this must be Carey". And then I'm awake but humming Carey to myself for quite a long time afterwards. catman wrote: > Last night I had a Joni dream. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 10:30:47 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: preganant Joni Dream In a message dated 3/9/01 10:10:02 AM Eastern Standard Time, slarty@sympatico.ca writes: << Is there a full moon or something? >> There was indeed. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 07:07:48 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: B&N out of print Joni books Kammy, thanks for the tip. And while it didn't bowl me over, it IS interesting that SO many bands from ALL genres feel like they *have* to do a Joni tune. Not because they're making fun of her...out of homage, out of DEBT to her. I got a CD in the mail today from a band called "Kind of Like Spitting". Very different, raw acoustic sparse-sounding kind of stuff. The title of the first song is "Fuck Liz where are you". The title of the last track is "Instinctually restricted the animal will bolt". Here's the kicker... Track 6 is "The Last time I Saw Richard"!! And it's a pretty straight-up version, REALLY different guitar arrangement... Clark, forgive me for "outing" you with this before I talked with you. So, Clark and I are at a concert in old Hollywood (kinda Silverlakey area). It's in a run down venue billing several good artists, among them JM. Kakki must have been in Hawaii, cause she wasn't there. They were using an old green igloo like building next door for a dressing area. You know, the kind people put up in the 1970s in LA to tease neighbors into thinking the neighborhood was cool again. From the igloo, Joni emerges, cigarette in hand. Like EVERYWHERE else in LA, smoking is prohibited - I assume the same was true for the "igloo." Clark and I, enjoying a smoke of our own, spotted the blond. "Why don't you come smoke with us, Joni," I yelled down Sunset. She flashed a smile and walked our way. Having a pocketful of Clark's CDs in my jacket, after some humble introductions and shared memories of Saskatoon, I handed one to Joni suggesting she take a peak at the dedication. "Cool," she said, "but I already heard it. Number Two is my favorite." She DOES have good taste. She then proceeded to tell us some secret stories. Each one was sung in the form of one of her famous (or semi-famous) recorded songs. After a story or two (one about O'Keefe, another about Cass Elliot), she said we would have to play a game. She would tell us stories or answer questions only if we could identify the song she used to frame sung stories. They were all her songs, she advised. For each one we got right, she gave us an M&M. There were several before we were done. Clark got the most M&Ms -- a fistful. I got three. One for Lucky Girl, another for Car on a Hill, and a third for TLTISR. The stories were amazing -- I am gentleman and won't divulge the secrets of a sparrow, but one involved her new recording contract. She asked Clark to be a guest artist. Gnight, everyone! It stopped me in my tracks. What a beautiful sight tonight! It was as bright as a bare lightbulb. Much more interesting though with that face in the moon showing. It seemed so close and felt like a magnet pulling me as far east as I could walk because I imagined once I got to the river surely I'd be able to pluck it down, look it over closely, toss it around a little maybe, and then put it back so it would keep shining on y'all too. So how does the moon just hang there anyway? Oh, yeah, something about orbits and gravity and all that stuff, but that doesn't explain how tonight the moon looked so odd and dramatically alone as it lit up all the thick clouds around it that were sometimes pausing, but mostly flying past. The moon showed them the way. Or so it seemed :-) Debra Shea in NYC, and obviously affected by all the dreams I've been reading about NP: Dave Matthews, Live at Luther College, Seek Up catman wrote: > There was here too. I doubt that it would be much better than the copy I got off the satellite-which I'm willing to loan as a master if someone wants to make a tree out of it. I'm sure someone our there knows the answer.... When Joni recorded her first 2 albums, did she do the voice and guitar as separate tracks, or did she do them live? They are so perfect! Does anyone know any details about how she layed down these songs?
