Apologies for taking up bandwidth without the NJC, but I want to make sure we cover everyone. That list will be the place to find roommates, rides to the fest, and other important announcements related to Jonifest. After dining at the state dinner in Beijing, Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin cajoled each other to take turns conducting the People's Liberation Army band. Jiang "was modestly declining an invitation to conduct [by the band leader], but Clinton egged him on, saying: 'You can do it, Mr. President! Go for it!' " After Jiang conducted a few bars of "Song for the Motherland", he asked Clinton to try his hand. The latter led the band in a John Philip Sousa march. "More... followed the after-dinner entertainment, which involved a large ensemble playing Western and Chinese music on traditional Chinese instruments. Particularly striking was the [group's] rendition of Joni Mitchell's 'Chelsea Morning,' featuring a soloist on a reed instrument called a suona." (The suona sounds like a piercing, amplified kazoo. It must've sounded a bit jarring to hear it render the lilting melody of that song.) I've only ever used a one-on-one chat thang before and so I was wondering if there's a protocol for group chatrooms. i.e. who talks first, replies next. Hints? I can imagine it could get damned confusing from my experience of one-on-ones. Are we allowed to bring up NJC? Oh please say yes, but within reason, of course. Man this could be fun. This constitutes an ever closer encounter of the second kind. Wait till NYC and N'awlins! Close encounter of the hello-nice-to-meet-you kind. What with time differences, we should arrange a mandatory meeting over a weekend, preferably this or the next one as I'll be unsubscribing soon. Boo hoo! Cultural exchange is great but there is something very creepy about this to me. How did you find it - under a "Joni Mitchell" search? As a side note, it was reported in several publications that Chelsea Morning was played by the dj at Chelsea Clinton's 21st birthday party in New York recently. Kakki, where's your sense of adventure? ;~) Anyway, while on this particular search I found that Chelsea Morning has also been done by two Finnish artists, in 1972 and 1979! It bears little resemblance to the original, but since (for me anyway) that one has kind of been played to death, it's nice to hear a totally different interpretation - and they don't come much different than this! It blew me away. When I saw this last year, I sat and cried because it meant so much to me to see her alive and well and receiving all the attention she deserved. (BTW anyone in the know of who is up in the box with her other than Donald and Diana ??)This time I sat and cried because the sound and visual quality of this video allowed me to really absorb the magnitude of the performances, as well as the narrated montage scenes, which are spectacular on this quality copy. I could even recognize folks in the audience- Goldie, Rosie, etc. If you have not seen this tribute to her- you absolutely must not deny yourself this little piece of Joni heaven. Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin do an amazing harmonized rendition of Amelia, as well as a medley of her more pop stuff joined in by none- other -than James Taylor himself, who then croons out River to "Jone the bone on the throne where she belone!" To see the mutual admiration still evident between them makes my heart swell. kd lang does a heartfelt "Help Me" and Sir Elton tickles the ivories to Free Man in Paris and then willingly admits intimidation to be in her presence. There is so much more (Cyndi Lauper gyrates to Carey) and I know jlamadoo@home.com will help you out. All you have to do is ask nicely. To all of you who so generously share freely of your treasures. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Janine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 01:46:20 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: Joni's Most Underrated? I agree with Kakki (so what else is new?) that Joni's "Miles Of Aisles" is a good record. I think it's solid mainstream pop. The musicians are as good as anyone on albums of the day by JT, & Carole King. It's telling that MOA comes up short _in retrospect_. When comparing it to the level of S&L, HOSL, and Hejira, yeah, it's not there. Tom Scott comes up short in comparison to Wayne Shorter. Yeah. Absolutely. But in a way, so what? It's almost a no-brainer to agree with that statement. I also agree that Tom's contribution "worked" better in the studio than on the live album. I still like MOA more than some earlier, studio albums that will remain nameless. :) The fact that she attained higher highs doesn't diminish MOA, to me. The glass is *more* than half full.
