I am issuing copies of her music to acquaintances from the 38 tracks I recorded. As I said, the reaction has been good. It's clear that she needs to do some concerts or appearances in the UK to up her profile. She also would need to sing at least some older and more accessible tracks - from what I know of her , my bet is that she would only sing her latest favourites. What is so frustrating is that I could easily pick some great tracks that would have wide appeal,if properly packaged with a creative video and some marketing back up.Joni doesn't seem at all interested in popularity. It's real tough on her fans. She's a tough lady to admire......but it looks like I'm stuck with my obsession for life. She's embedded deep in the bloodstream. No other artist has ever affected me like this.Is there a cure for this , please someone? ANYWAY, i had to stop what i was doing when "two grey rooms" came on. what a powerful, aching, beautiful song. it sounds like the musical equivalent of deja vu--eerie, reminiscent, a bit sad. and it's been playing in my head all day. i was thinking at first that it seems like one of my favorite "last songs" on joni's albums. but then i didn't know what i meant by that. lyrically, it's such a small gem unto itself that it doesn't seem to be the grand perfect epic ending that "refuge of the roads" is for hejira (if there were to be a category of "last songs" i think this is clearly her "best"). it doesn't, i mean, contribute to the WHOLE of NRH by actively ending that album, thematically, sonically. but -- it just seems perfect, so beautiful, so right to close on that note. i remember there was a thread a while ago about the best first song on an album -- but i don't remember us going over best or favorite "last songs". does anyone have a special one? what are the reasons or qualities for thinking so? - -- emily, just feeling like tossing out some JC ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 18:37:00 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Jack's prints selling on ebay Just so that you guys know, we've decided to sell Jack's prints (with his permission of course) on ebay. These songs are to me the climax of the albums, the songs where Joni sums up the album's theme and offers hope for the future. I call them her "big picture" songs as they offer a glimpse at how she predicts things could turn out in an ideal world. They sometimes evoke images of heavenly bodies and beings, or paint a picture of special places she has been. Never one to be labeled predictable, though; Joni Mitchell will throw in a surprise like "Twisted" as the final track once in a while just to keep things creative. Not only is NRH one of my top 3 Joni albums, but "Three Grey Rooms" is my favorite last song on any of her albums. Sure it's a bit of a sad song, but it's one that I can play over and over. Since you asked for a reason, I can think of an occasion that happened about a month ago. As some of my JMDL friends know, I went on an all gay cruise in early Feb. after the breakup of my 23 yr relationship with Ed. On the third day of the cruise one early evening, I saw a man from beneath my balcony who sent chills up and down my spine, and I finally went down to talk to him. He said he was going to be at the dance later in the evening after dinner. I couldn't wait to see him. I looked all over the ship and never could find him that night. As the Titanic was sinking in the moonlight, I went back to my room and listened to "Two Grey Rooms" on the headset over and over. My situation wasn't exactly like the song, but it's how I felt......happy if I could just get another glimpse of him. The following morning, I saw him again (below my balcony)...........This time I didn't let him go, and the rest of the cruise was *wonderful*. I'm really looking forward to seeing him again next month in San Diego :~) To me "Two Grey Rooms" *is* a small gem lyrically, but WOW what impact. Tom Scott and the Los Angeles session musicians who helped her make the big change from FTR on to C&S and HOSL seem somewhat underrated to me. Especially, compared with the praise heaped on Jaco's contributions. Quincy Jones suggested to Tom Scott that he should do a cover of Woodstock. Joni was impressed with his take on it and asked him to play on FTR. Scott's credits on those records seem modest given his band leader role that was evident at the MOA shows. C&S is filled with marvelous details, the fading car horn sound on Car On A Hill, cymbals crashing like the waves at Malibu, playing to the rhythm of the rails on Just Like This Train Guitar genius Larry Carlton blends so seamlessly into the sound you'd almost forget he's there. .And not forgetting Max Bennett's bass lines (especially on HOSL title track). John Guerin's solid but subtle drumming. Just thought I'd mention those guys from a real exciting time in Joni music. Luka Bloom's UFG is good but I was kinda expecting a more adventurous effort from the Kildare man. The English Girls are not ignoring Joni either. Their version Of Help Me has a lovely freshness about it. Marian Hoiting's Carey is a real surprise -very original, piano with congas beats. Bossa nova king Stan Getz's BSN is burdened by an over busy orchestral arrangement. The Ballroom Band play the BSN melody on melodica and synth. It's got a real west african style beat to get the dancers on the floor. Barbara Higbie and Ronnie Aldich do lovely piano instrumentals of Rainy Night House and Woodstock. Strangely on Ronnie's, the piano moves back and forth from left speaker to right throughout the tune. CPR's For Free is ponderous but has nice steel guitar. The C is for ex-Byrd Crosby, don't know the other two. Thanks Bob and crew. Hi Philip, I have Tom Scott to thank for getting me hooked on Joni. I was in the midst of a personal "jazz period" in the 1970s and was familiar with his work. When I noticed he was collaborating with Joni Mitchell I took the plunge and bought her album "Miles of Aisles." I have been captivated ever since. It was a huge step in her career to recruit these musicians and start layering more and more tracks...a process that continues to this day. The albums you mentioned, C&S and HOSL, remain among my all-time favorites. However, it is my understanding that Scott's contributions to her sound of that era, while noteworthy, were not entirely born of his own creativity. While in the studio Joni would often hum or sing the parts she wanted each instrument to play, in effect making these players no more than "session" pros who were reciting (playing) the lines given to them. Jaco Pastorius was given much more free reign (and WHO could even think of holding him back??). Joni had been looking for a bass player who would be more "out front" and found the perfect complement in Jaco. Before Jaco, she pleaded with bass players to take the lead, come to the fore, but found they were all closely bound to the "root of the chord," which is of course what they are taught to do...provide the foundation for the music, not straying too far from the structure. Jaco pushed the envelope...way out front...and made it work. Joni may have given Pastorius a few images but largely left him to his own devices. A discussion about the musicians she has worked with would not be complete without mentioning Wayne Shorter. While record contracts conspire to keep Shorter's appearances with her to a minimum, his contributions are brilliant and just as inventive as Jaco's. I am sure most, if not all involved in this digest are familiar with the movie " Message To Love: The Isle Of Wight Festival " because of the traumatic episode involving Joni. If so , is there anyone who was there or more specifically, is there anyone who was part of the group called " Desolation Row". I ask because I was part of that group but didn't know it until I saw the movie. I was 19, cared about the music, had no interest in the "Free Concert Revolution ", waited for hours on the side of the mountain to hear JM, and was unbelievably pissed off when the mike was taken from her. I actually don't remember the name of the guy who took the mike, but he was telling the truth about the free tickets. I got one of the first ones, never used it because the hillside was less crowded and you could hear pretty well, then put it in a book for safe keeping years ago and now can't find it. No big deal. However, aside from the trouble maker, who by the way, ended the revolution as soon as he hooked up with a woman, I met some wonderful people and would like to correspond with any of them. I would especially like to find someone nicknamed " Chickey " She is shown during an interview just standing and smiling by herself with a bandana across her head. It covered what I guess was a large birth mark on her forehead but I don't think that it bothered her. In any case, she was the mother hen to all in the group, organized food and fire at night, and just had a wonderful way about her. I met a few from the group back in the states because they were students at Princeton University and they invited me to party with them. I have lost contact and would now like to renew it. Ifanyone can help, please e-mail me at bmbspirit@cs.com. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2001 01:17:15 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: someone instant message the chat room address please (md) Here's a link to the new JMDL chat room. I thought "who are these guys - she doesn't need a band!" How parochial, but I was young and uninformed. I had flipped over FTR and C&S not even paying attention to the contributions of that band. Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, Max Bennett....in retrospect, I say "hello????" I'm sorry I missed seeing Tom a couple years ago here in Hollywood. Robben Ford played here at the Catalina Bar & Grill last Thursday night and I was intent on going but couldn't make it. I will try to make up for lost opportunities and lack of appreciation in the future! Pound for pound, they outweighed Jaco and Pat, IMHO.
